About This Listing
Europe´s closest house to Africa. Here Africa meets Europe and the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean. The view is, quite simply … sensational, a panorama of two continents, a great ocean and a dazzling sea, in the middle of the Natural Park of the Straits of Gibraltar. And the villa makes the very best of this amazing location with huge picture windows looking directly out across the sea.
Just 100 metres from the shoreline, here Africa meets Europe and the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean. Views are breathtaking, across the deep blue sea bright in the sunshine to the massive peaks of the Atlas Mountains which rise up dramatically beyond Morocco's beaches just eight miles away.
To your left you look far into the ever widening Mediterranean, to your right to the vast expanses of a great ocean. Here you will feast on glorious sunrises, golden sunsets; the quality of light is unbelievable.
And it's incredibly relaxing too, watching the ships passing slowly through the Straits of Gibraltar (more than 350 ships, yachts and ferries negotiate this narrow stretch of water every day), the street lights of Tangier, Ceuta and other towns on the Moroccan coastline twinkling brightly at night. If you are lucky, you will spot whales and dolphins or the biggest bird migrations in Europe as they fly from one continent to the other.
Tarifa is only a couple of kilometres away (a beautiful, 25 minute walk along the cliffs; just eight minutes by car) but right here there is nothing but peace, tranquility and the sound of silence. Just amazing seascapes and the stunning nature of the Natural Park all around which plunges dramatically down to the rocky, wild beaches. A perfect place to disconnect from life's usual routines.
There are all manner of coastal and countryside tracks to explore, an abundance of wild flowers everywhere, a new and always sensational view to be enjoyed at every turn. Only a few roaming cows on the hillsides and the occasional fisherman down on the rocks to keep you company. It's magical!
Access is pretty good considering the terrain all around is so spectacular. Until recently these hills were the sole domain of the Spanish military; they have left now but the roads and tracks they built through the steep hills and valleys remain.
So the access road is tarmacked, if a little narrow and bendy in places and only the last 800 meters to the house is dirt track. This bit is a little bumpy but easily negotiable in an ordinary car with due care and attention. We don't recommend a low-slung sports car.
views from the clifftop to Tarifa.
A little path leads up through the garden to the villa, gleaming white and dazzlingly bright in the sunshine. It's of simple design and construction, neatly and attractively furnished with everything you will need to enjoy your stay. But its predominant feature is the fabulous view through its huge windows … not only is it the closest villa to Africa, it has probably got the best views in Europe!
One enters to the living / dining room / kitchen with its amazing picture window. The light simply floods in! Colourful cushions are scattered on bench seating around a wooden coffee table at the front of the room, with a little dining area behind and the kitchen to its side. It's adequately equipped for rustling up basic meals (there's a big fridge/freezer and a 4 ring hob etc) but please note that there is no oven.
The master bedroom (with a 4 poster double bed) leads off on one side. It's spacious and, of course, has a view! The en-suite facilities are in the room, the W.C. screened off by opaque glass tiles. Not everyone's cup of tea, perhaps, but not a bad place to take your morning shower, looking out over the shimmering sea!
On the other side of the living room, a short corridor leads to the other two bedrooms (one double with great sea views) and one twin (with views to the side and to the Atlantic). They share a bathroom between them (walk-in shower, no bath tub). There is also an outdoor shower.
Glass doors open from the living room to the outdoor sitting and terrace areas. There's a little seating area (for two) just outside the room and a larger terrace area to the side of the villa. A wooden dining table for al fresco meals, a sunshade, sunbeds and lay-down teak chairs make this a lovely spot to soak up the sun whilst watching the ships gliding silently by beyond the giant bulrushes below the house.
On the other side of the villa, passing by a little graveled area with more sun beds, a high cane hedge marks the garden's boundary and protects the house from Levante winds. The gateway through the hedge will take you to a little vegetable garden (the gardner, Francisco, will offer you some seasonal vegetables whenever he can).
It's about as ecological as can be here. There's no mains electricity in this remote corner of Spain, so everything works on solar and wind power; water comes from local wells. There's no air conditioning either, the fresh sea breezes and the stone construction of the villa keep everything cool, even on the hottest of summer days.
A short stroll onto the headland (you will see Tarifa clearly from here, a mile or so further along the coast) takes you to the rocky coves of the Mediterranean. There are no sandy beaches here, just wild, rugged but very beautiful coves, excellent for fishing and snorkeling. You can sunbathe unmolested in any number of these little bays.
There's a million things to do from here, quite apart from reveling in this amazing location. There are plenty of excellent restaurants and night spots in and around Tarifa, mile upon mile of white, sandy beaches on the Costa de la Luz immediately beyond. There are beautiful white villages in inland Cádiz to explore, wind and kite surfing, diving, golf, horse riding et al. This is not just the coast of light, it is also the coast of wonders.
And there's always the option of a day trip to Morocco, only 35 minutes away from Tarifa on the high speed catamaran … but a totally different world. Ferries also leave from Algeciras and, either way, it's a wonderful trip, especially on the longer, 3 hour trip from Algeciras, the ship accompanied through the Straits by dolphins and whales.
Client comments include, "Absolutely fab! Will definitely come back! This place is amazing, five star accommodation with five star views across to Africa" and "There are few places where you can find this unique combination of an awesome landscape (you can see Africa from your bed), a very comfortable and well designed house and great hospitality from the owners. Our favorite place in Europe, hands down!
Guest have access to the self service vegetable garden which is located at the back of the 6 acre property, this space is for all guests of the 3 houses on the property. However, the vegetable garden is a 1 min walk from the 3 houses, leaving each house with their private outside area.
Interaction with Guests
We come by to say hello in the check in. Then we leave our guest enjoy their privacy. Paco our house keeper and the gardener come every day to work on the 6 acre 30.000m2 of property and vegetable garden, you will occasionally see them, and if you need and help or assistance it will be easy to either ask them, or contact me through email, whats app, or the airbnb system as well as telephone.
Because the house works from solar and wind power the electricity does not let you use electric hair dryers or electric toaster. The rest of electric appliances (t.v. computers, lights, fridge, music, etc...)work like any other house, this means that you do not make a carbon foot print on your holidays!!!
Please do not smoke inside the house, plenty of terraces to smoke out side!!!
If you come with a Dog, please bring his bed, do not let you Pet go on the furniture.
Genral view of the house. Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meeting with Africa in the Backgroung !!
We were 6 people in Marcos house. It was comfortable and clean, kitchen was fully equipped, due to the ocean nearby and humid air everything was a little bit moist. Marcos gave us very detailed information how to find the house and the sightseeing track to Tarifa. There you can enjoy a fantastic view to Africa sitting in terrace. It was an hour drive from Gibraltar or Bolona (spectacular dune and sandy ocean beach!).
When we entered the house and saw Africa through the huge front window – we had a WOW effect. When we walked around the house and saw the terrace with the relaxing sunbed – we had a WOW effect. The communication with Marcos was friendly and uncomplicated all the time. All in all, it was really great staying at this calm, quiet and unique place for 4 days. We loved to cook by ourselves, the kitchen was well-equipped! Thanks Marcos!
That was a fantastic holiday! A really nice house in a perfect landscape. We enjoyed every single minute.
The Beach Front Villa was a fantastic villa and truly a highlight in our travels to Spain. It was very clean and Marcos' pdf package that explained in detail the way to the villa made it easy to find. The villa is in a truly very unique location being in the middel of a national park, a short walk from the beach, with sunrises and sunsets that are what novel are written. I only wish I were a writer to do it justice. Paco was very helpful and welcoming. A true slice of peaceful heaven.
I have been guest in the beautiful villa together with my husband and our kids, 4 nights on the Christmas holidays. Communication with Marcos was easy and he answered always promptly even if he lives in Australia. He gave us all the detailed informations about the house and the way to arrive. The house is exactly as described maybe more spectacular than you can see from pictures. Paco, the housekeeper, was very helpful. If you like to be really in the nature, that's the right place. Anyhow Tarifa and its bars-cafe-restaurant is only 20 minutes by car. The path by foot along the coast from the house to Tarifa, was superb. We were very sad to leave and we would like to come again!
Our stay in the Beach Front Villa in Tarifa was a highlights of our trip to Spain! The house is located on the bluff east of the town of Tarifa in a national park and what was a former military station. The views from the house are wonderful across the Straits of Gibralter to Morocco. When the morning mist lifts, you can see the wind turbines on the hills as it is that close! The 1 mile walk along the bluff into the town of Tarifa is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of the area. The house is very lovely and is well furnished with everything necessary to relax and enjoy the amazing environment is is situated in. There are patios to sit outside in nice weather. Paco, the property manager was available to see us in and answer any questions we had and is a very warm and friendly person. All in all, it was a peaceful and lovely experience! We highly recommend this house for an unforgettable experience!

About the Host, Marcos
I was born in Malaga, Spain of Australian parents, at the age of 18 I moved to Tarifa attracted by the windsurfing and was Spanish champion and also did the world cup, i was looking for a special place for many years and after living in the Costa de la Luz for ten years decided to buy La Casa de la Costa, at that time i meet Paco who has helped my family as a builder, gardener and above all as a friend. We run the Casa de la Costa and Casa del Estrecho together as a holiday rental house, so when i am not around Paco looks after everyone and I live part of the year in Australia with my family, and do all the bookings via email and organize with Paco the hand over of the keys to our clients via internet, we have been doing this for a while now and are both very happy to please our clients. Year purchased: 2000 Why the owner chose an apartment in this location After living for ten years in La Costa de la Luz, and looking everywhere for the perfect place, it finally came in the form of a run down finca (farm) just 3km for the center of Tarifa, immediately i saw the potential of the place, and although it is extremely difficult to get the refurbishing permits for building i went ahead, and after many head aches with local authorities managed to get the permits, and with Paco and myself built up the three houses on the finca slowly but surely, ten years later it was finished, La Finca de la Costa is considered to be one of the best properties in the hole of La Costa de la Luz (not boasting) and has THE BEST VIEW to Africa. It simply doesn't get better. The place is magical, situated between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, Africa and Europe. Unique benefits of the property Although just an 8 min drive from the center of town, but the last 800m is a dirt track which low sport cars can not access, but normal cars can access perfectly well, or a 25min walk, it seems like you are the only person in the world when staying at the property. Its the closest house to Africa and the biggest bird migrations pass just over your head (in season), as well as looking at the hundreds of different boats going through the straits of Gibraltar, sometimes we also spot whales and dolphins, and lots of space, no sounds of the modern world, just nature and peace, it is absolutely unique, words can not describe the place, one of the last unspoiled coasts in Spain, and there you are all alone!!! Just a complete relax without having to go to the Himalayas.
