Kapoho is a quiet community on the eastern tip of the island. It’s often referred to as “Sunny Kapoho” as it sees only about a third of the rain that falls in Hilo. This neighborhood offers easy access to the water and some of the best snorkeling in the state.
You’ll have a blast exploring along the Red Road – one of the most beautiful drives you’ll ever take. Heading south from Kapoho you’ll find Ahalanui Park, aka Millionaires Pond, a park with a lagoon at the ocean’s edge that is almost Jacuzzi temperature. 5 minutes past there is Isaac Hale Park at Pohoiki Bay the local hot spot for surfing and boogie boarding, and is home to the boat ramp that the lava viewing boats use. Kehena Black Sand Beach is a 15 minute drive. The Kalapana lava viewing area (Pele willing) is 25 minutes away at the end of the Red Road.
Eclectic Pahoa Town is 9 miles from Kapoho, with yummy restaurants, fun shopping , and necessities like convenience and grocery stores, banks, gas, etc. Historic Hilo is 45 minutes from Kapoho, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about an hour.
The neighborhood is fairly remote and public transportation is slim to none, so you'll need a car. Parking in driveway.
