THE LOCAL AREA
THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE LONDON AT ITS BEST!!!
OXFORD STREET, the premier shopping street in Europe is under a mile(1km) walk from the apartment. It is one and a half miles(2km) from end to end and is a shoppers paradise. Most shops open 10am until 6 or 7pm. Many also open on Sunday from 12 to 6pm with late nights on Thursday. Oxford Street is best known for Selfridges and the other big department stores which are all found in the section from Marble Arch to Oxford Circus, along with most of the big-name multinationals such as Nike, Primark, Topshop, Apple, etc. It's more of the same towards Tottenham Court Road, but generally on a smaller scale. Oxford Street is said to be the busiest shopping street in Europe.
The section of Edgware Road near to Marble Arch is famous for its distinctive Middle-Eastern character. Lebanese restaurants, shisha cafes and clubs line both sides of the road, with some staying open late into the night. Marble Arch station is a few minutes walk from the southern end of Edgware Road.
Just a short step away from the tourist hordes, the apartment still has the feel of a real neighbourhood, the wealthy residents are becoming ever more attractive as Harley Street, the traditional home of England's best doctors, has recently become the heart of the UK's flourishing plastic surgery industry.
The beautiful architecture (the Wallace Collection is a must) and the open spaces of Regent's Park and Hyde Park make this a fine area to have a wander, when the sun's out there are fewer places in London as scenic and special as Hyde Park.
While Marylebone High Street is absolutely charming, lined with traditional pubs, beautiful boutiques and shops (including the flagship Daunt Books) and excellent local restaurants as well as an impressive mix of hotels - and a farmer's market every Saturday.
A short walk from Marylebone is the home of the most famous fictional detective in the world 'Sherlock Holmes' bachelor flat at 221B Baker Street and the popular waxworks at Madame Tussauds.
We have Italian, Chinese speaking staff available. Please call us for any enquiries.
We operate a clean as you go policy and kindly request our guests tidy up after themselves.
Central location and easy to move around the city from there. Excellent apartment and easy to converse with the owner.
A short walk from the train station. Carrie was wonderful and provided everything we needed. Highly recommend staying here.
We spent some nice days in London. It was easy to find the flat, because of Carries Description. The appartment is 5 minutes walk to Marylebone Station and Edgeware Road Station, so you can choose two tube lines (Circle and Bakerloo) to get to the famous sights. To pick up the keys was easy, too. The flat is small, but was very comfortable for our family (2 adults, 2 childs). Everything was clean. The kitchen was fully equipped with all we need, including breakfast flakes and coffee. First the fridge was too cold, so we had an icecube in our bottle the first day. Uups :-) There's a supermarket near Marylebone, where you can get fresh food. The Environment of the flat was very calm and looks safe, so we let our 10 year old boy skating in front of the house by his own. There is a small grill bar in the nett House, where you can eat for less money.
We enjoyed our stay very much and will recommend you. Thank you!
Andrea & Raimund.
We didn't meet our host Carrie, though she did send us a detailed email with instructions. She was also flexible enough to let us check in half an hour early. And there was a lovely big bunch of fresh flowers on the dining table when we arrived.
The key safe access process is a good idea but we had trouble getting the safe open, so potentially could have been stranded outside with a very unhappy 3 year old.
The apartment is very small though quite bright and ok for a short stay. Probably better suited for two people rather than four. The access to the bathroom was off the bedroom which was not ideal since we had our sister in law with us as well. Also the sleeping arrangements didn't quite work for us. We were intending for my husband and I to have the bed in the bedroom and my daughter to sleep with her aunt on the sofa bed. But the linen provided for the sofa bed did not fit it so we couldn't use it for two and my daughter ended up in the double bed with us. The double bed had to be the worst bed we had ever tried to sleep in. We had three very bad nights here. My husband ended up sleeping on the bare floor one night. There weren't even extra sheets that he could have used.
On top of that the floors in this building are so thin that we felt like there was a herd of elephants thumping around in the apartment above us.
The bathroom and the very very small kitchen were of the type that you couldn't tell if it had been cleaned or not. Also, the fridge kept freezing all our food and the cook top did not work properly. There were enough plates and cutlery for four people to eat but no more. Not even enough glasses for four. The linen and crockery provision I thought was a bit on the stingy side. The fresh flowers (which we had to put on the floor in a corner in order to use the table) and the great pile of cushions did not make up for what was lacking. For the amount of money we paid we expected something a bit better. On a positive note, the apartment is in a pretty good location with easy access to public transport and the hop on hop off tourist buses and a Tesco Express.
I never met my host. She has a quite effective system of leaving the keys in a locker outside the door so that no meeting has to be arranged. Yet, the locker itself is quite old and a bit flawed: had it not been for my husband, who managed to help himself with a pen, I might have had a hard time to retrieve the keys.
The neighbourhood is very quiet and friendly and the location is great, with good connections to the city center.
Quiet as the area and the building are, we would have appreciated to be able to lock the apartment door from the inside at night. We had to pile our suitases in front of the door instead.
The overall level of attention to the needs of the guests was indeed poor: the fridge freezed everything we stored in it; the gas boiler leaked; we found stained (!) sheets upon arrival. When, on day 2 of our stay, someone entered the apartment (without us being warned first) and left a change of sheets.... those didn't fit any of the two available beds (!).
