Some additional details:
We live in a two-story home in Prosser Lakeview, which is a neighborhood about five minutes north of the town of Truckee. We occupy the top floor and the apartment is on the ground level. It's a large one bedroom, one bathroom with small efficient kitchen/dining area and a nice sized living room.
The bedroom is in the back of the apartment and has a new queen size bed with all the trimmings - down comforters, lots of pillows. There is a desk and chair in the bedroom and wi-fi is available. The bathroom is in a short hall between the bedroom and living room and has a tub/shower combo with a large closet in the hall. The front of the apartment is an open floor plan with kitchen, dining and living room all open concept. The kitchen, divided from the living room by a natural redwood bar, has everything you need for cooking - pots and pans, dishes, utensils, microwave, coffee pot, tea kettle. The living room has a fold-down couch for additional sleeping, a wood stove as primary heat (with electric heaters in each room for additional heating needs), television, stereo and i-pod hook-up.
Our home is a short walk to Prosser Lake and the acres of open space surrounding it. We live in a neighborhood consisting primarily of year-round local residents, lots of dogs, friendly and social neighbors.
I have worked as an estate planning paralegal for a local law firm for the past 30 years and love being part of our mountain community. I have many interests including gardening, cooking, home crafting, sustainable living, mother earth and outdoor activities of all kinds. I have a company with my daughter called "Taste of Truckee" which makes all natural lotions, lip balms, salves and lotion bars. Find us on (website hidden)! My partner Chris is a rock climbing instructor and guide who has been climbing the rock on Donner Summit and around Tahoe for the past 30 years. Check out his (email hidden) for ideas on how to spend a summer day!
We've hosted many friends over the years and I hope that our experience will provide the kind of comfortable, accommodating visit you are looking for. Come play - the mountains are calling!
The Better Base Camp offers a covered parking space, access to the yard and waterfall in the summer, a rock fire-pit and plenty of open space
Interaction with Guests
I am generally available to greet guests and keep my cell phone close for questions and local information. I'm happy to keep the fire stoked while guests are out adventuring but generally leave the guests to enjoy their stay without my company :)
This is the real deal. We are a neighborhood of locals who live in Truckee because we love our environment, the generosity and tolerance of our community and the freedom to express ourselves. It's a safe, friendly, dog-loving, wonderland!
Public transit is available on a limited basis. There is a Truckee "Dial-a-Ride" van that can pick you up and deliver you to destinations with a reservation. There are two rental car agencies in town, Enterprise and Hertz. There are buses that run from downtown to the ski resorts, and there are several cab companies.
Future friends, respectful guests, shared experiences....
Simply respect the property and the neighbors. Please limit smoking to out-door areas. We provide linens and towels. For guests staying three or more days, we will wash linens and towels at your request.
If you want to bring your pet - let's talk about the particulars first! I have a 100 pound female dog named Bean and we want to make sure appropriate introductions are part of the plan!
The primary renter must be at least 18 years old.
That's it - come relax, play, enjoy.
We felt really welcome, loved the candles and warmth of Kelly. She was really available but gave us lots of space. One interesting thing to note is that there isn't a door on the bedroom. Only important if you have a young one like we did but we figured out how to keep the room dark.
We had a wonderful time at the Better Base Camp. The apartment was warm, cozy, and clean when we arrived and Kelly graciously accommodated our outrageous arrival time (1am!) by leaving the key out for us. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the kitchen was stocked with all the cooking essentials we needed to make dinner. The lack of snow was a bummer, but we did make it up to Northstar, which was only 15 min away, and spent some time in downtown Truckee, which was only 10 min away. Highly recommend this cozy retreat!
The place is exactly as in the pictures, the descriptions, and reviews, and even better. If you plan to have a trip and look for a cottage in wood. This is the place you should take.
Kelly is a super host. She gave us all the necessary supports we need during our stay. When we were staying there, there was snow, and my rear-wheel driving car has trouble to drive out, Kelly drove us to find the easy path for our car, and after that she also drove her car and lead us to the clean road.
I highly recommend kelly and her cottage. Will come back again.
This place was cozy, beautiful, and only 7 minutes from down town Truckee! It was so comfy that we almost didn't want to get out of bed to start our day!! But once we left we were glad to be in such a friendly wonderful town. We forgot to bring milk for our cereal and Kelly was nice enough to give us some of hers. Thank you so much Kelly for making our anniversary trip so special!

About the Host, Kelly
Our accommodations were inspired by the outdoor enthusiasts we have met and played with over the past 30 years of living in Truckee. Like the friends we have made who are vacationing here, we also visit other outdoor playgrounds and have often found the need for a better bivy. So spend some time in our guest quarters and experience the Truckee the locals know and love.
And speaking of other outdoor playgrounds - check out our desert option - the Cactus Crib in Joshua Tree, California. Another outdoor mecca and the perfect place to spend a quiet get-away.
