The Zen Den on the Island

Apartment - Private room · Cutlers House, 45A Mowbray Street, Sheffield, S3 8ES, United Kingdom

With a balcony over the river and a great location on Kelham Island not far from the tram stop and the best real ale pubs in the city, this modern warm comfortable flat with wi-fi is a quiet retreat near the centre of the city and the station.

The Space

The Zen Den is on Kelham Island S3 8ES overlooking the river in a quiet modern apartment block with cobbled courtyard next to The Foundry - an indoor climbing centre - in the revitalised heart of Sheffield's early steel industry and now a funky artists quarter. It is a 1 bed flat - small, quiet and warm - with 1 small but separate double bedroom (which is where most people prefer to sleep) or if you prefer I have a long wide comfortable sofa for one (its not a sofa bed). My guests usually prefer the privacy of the separate bedroom - which is great ... 'cos I love the sofa! (You can swap if you prefer). The power shower is the best I've ever had and guests comment on how good it is. It's a no smoking Zen Den - Elvis doesn't approve of anything that's bad for your body. There are many modern designed flats nearby but also 'little mesters' workshops used by artists, craftspeople, web designers etc. It is in 'the beer valley' - we are blessed with 4 or 5 real ale pubs with their own micro-breweries making great English beer like 'Pale Rider' at The Fat Cat. There is The Grind cafe with great coffee and wi-fi (my flat has wifi also) and a couple of quality diners - The Milestone and The Brooklyn. From the flat you can walk the 'Upper Don Walk' to Victoria Quays along the river and from there there is the beautiful quiet 'Five Weirs Walk' along the river and back along the canal - there are even fly fishermen these days. If you are here at the weekend you can even walk round the corner to the Kelham Island Industrial Museum and watch the giant 4-piston steam engine being cranked up. Or even kayak on the river. If you're a foody (who's not?) check out (website hidden). If you're a music fan (who's not?) check out (website hidden). It's all here in Sheffield ...

  • Warm and welcoming, Phil did his utmost to make us feel at home, and we felt very pleased to have chosen his flat as a crash pad for our spontaneous visit to Sheffield for the night! Loved the view over the river and watching the tiny ducklings... We slept late then breakfasted at the rather nice Grind Café as suggested by Phil. Easy 15 min walk to the station and back home happy and rested. Highly recommended Airbnb host :)

  • What a wonderful first experience of Airbnb this was! Phil is an amazing host and I certainly enjoyed my stay at the Zen Den! The house is clean and welcoming, and the bedroom is a gift to the traveller! I did enjoy our conversations Phil and I hope that the tin-amps are going as planned!!! Once again, thank you for your hospitality and the great cooking!

  • Phil was the best person I've ever met in Sheffield, never expected to meet such a nice lovely person, the room was very nice, clean and quite.
    I really recommend Phil.

  • Phil's little flat is an easy walk from the centre. He is an interesting guy and a great host - had been out to buy croissants and bacon, as well as offering experimental yoghurt! He had lots of suggestions for eating and drinking...Kelham Island just round the corner has 2 excellent real-ale pubs. Phil normally moves out of his bedroom to sleep on the sofa-bed when me has guests, but in fact he was away for the night I stayed there so I had the luxury of the flat to myself. It all worked out really well for me - thanks Phil!

  • Phil is a top bloke with a cool pad on the side of the river next to Kelham Island. He can give you lots of info about the area and we had good conversations. Made me a lovely cooked breakfast too. Comfy bed with good shower too. This is about 10 or 15 mins from the centre of town but there are some great real ale bars and canal walks round here as well places to fill up on coffee. Recommended. Cheers Phil!

  • Well, well what a great first experience with Air BnB thanks to Phil.
Was a welcomed to the Zen Den with a nice cup of tea before i had to rush of to work and upon returning had a beautiful dinner with great conversation. Phil and his flat are warm and welcoming, you feel more at home than you would in a hotel. Phil's knowledge of the local area are second to none so if you need to know anything he is the go to man. Wish i could have spent more time just chatting.

The Flat is clean and warm with the double room cosy and inviting. The shower is to die for :)

I would 100% recommend staying with Phil on you next visit to Sheffield and i can say i will be returning again very soon.

Thanks Phil, your a star :)

  • The room was perfect for a couple. The host was ultra perfect and the shower was ultra mega perfect! This place is near from the town centre, near from the bus/train station to visit the Peak District. And his apple pie is famous in Sheffield.

Hi fellow traveller - browse my profile and if you like the look and feel of my modern, quiet little flat on 'the Island' ... Kelham Island ... you're very welcome to stay. I guess you'd call me 'modern vintage' - an experienced entrepreneur who has started and mentored many businesses in the Creative and Digital sector ... and still like to play in a pop band - 'The Skin Divers' ... oh, and I've lived on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands for 2 years then came back this summer foir business opportunities - a mobile phone app called Musicode - and I've loved Sheffield and Kelham Island so much ... I'm staying a while longer. I live in a quiet courtyard next to the river and The Foundry indoor climbing centre. Kelham Island is in 'the beer valley' - we have 4 or 5 excellent real ale pubs with their own micro-breweries - not to be missed (although perhaps not ALL on the same night) and Grind cafe with wi-fi and good coffee and food. Oh, and there's The Milestone and Brooklyn diners and Kelham Island Industrial Museum - they have a giant steam engine which they fire up at weekends. There's ususally something on in the Island most nights e.g. Monday night is cheap beer and curry at the Fat Cat and Thursday there is live music at The Riverside. BTW ... I am the Tinamp Meister ... I make hand-crafted Tinamps ... amps in tins ... in my Zen Shed - (website hidden) - and I have a Raleigh push bike you can use if I'm not on it ... :-)
