The Space

Enjoy panoramic views and gorgeous sunsets of downtown Portland and access to nature amidst the 600 acre nature park of Powell Butte. Our family home is a relaxed retreat with farm-like qualities as we host goats, horses, chickens, dogs and cats along with little people, plenty of bunnies and a big garden of greens that you are welcome to partake in. We have two guest rooms with Queen Beds on the top floor overlooking city views of downtown. There is a full bath on each floor and one on the main floor is always designated for guests.

Many visitors enjoy the old-growth hikes or scenic views atop the butte, biking, hiking or horse back riding. There is public transit to downtown at the bottom of the hill, and with the right route you can be into inner SE or downtown in 15-20 min. The main attraction is the retreat within the city feel.

Guests can expect to make themselves at home. We will stock the fridge with breakfast items and leave out the coffee and tea. Fresh eggs and greens are always available. We are a busy working family and often gone 2-3 times a week so there will be long stretches where the house will be yours visiting briefly in person in passing when schedules allow. Phone or text for little updates. If there are major issues, please don't hesitate to call.

On a relaxed day we invite you to join us for a cup of coffee on the back covered deck bird watching or for a glass of wine on the front porch and a sunset. WE look forward to meeting you!

  • Jesse was an awesome host, and her property is beautiful! We spent most of our trip to Portland out exploring the city, but this was a nice place to return to (about 20 minutes from downtown). Lovely view of the city lights from the upstairs bedroom. It's obvious that Jesse really cares about making her guests feel welcome. She provided fresh breakfast food and warm conversation. The house is lived in, not at all stiff or sterile, which makes it very inviting. Loved the dog, cat, horses, goats and chickens as well! Thanks for having us, Jesse!

  • We had a great time staying with Jesse and family. We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived. She was super fast in replying and made the spontaneous trip to Portland possible. The location was a little ways away from downtown but it was nestled on the side of a hill beside a park so it was super quiet and peaceful. Also, there were a load of friendly animals living at the place which made it feel like home. I'd recommend anyone to stay here if you're down to earth and enjoy a quiet place to sleep. Would definitely come back here.

  • Jesse was a very friendly and open host for us. She gave us some very good tips to explore the city of Portland. The House is very big and directly next to the Powell Butte nature park, what gives you a great hiking or jogging opportunity. It is very big and first I had concerns about the dogs but then they exposed to be very nice animals!! You share the bathroom with other hosts, who could be there, but that worked very well during my stay. So all in all I found a great place to live for my time in Portland.

  • Due to its location close to a large natural area, this beautiful house with a nice view on eastern Portland feels almost like living on the countryside. Yet, its only a 20-30 minutes drive to Portland downtown. There are plenty of animals around (dogs, cats, sheep, ...) so if you're traveling with kids its the perfect place. It's a rather quiet location but you should expect that sometimes the dogs will wake you up at night barking (there's a friendly old dog in the house with a weak bladder that you will have to let it in and out at night). Jesse if very hospitable and friendly but also very busy, so you might not see a lot of her during your stay. You will live very close to her family and other guests.

  • My stay here was horrible, the dog peed in our room and Jesse did not soak up any of the urine she simply sprayed the spot four times with a clear liquid from a windex bottle. This was our final "this place is nasty" straw and this is when we asked for a refund for the remainder of our stay.
We had to ask for soap in the communal bathroom, there was none (gross.) The toilets are stained, there are dead bugs and dust in many corners and dog feces throughout the yard. DO NOT stay with Jesse if you have children. If the mess is not enough, one of her children (age 6) took all of my sons toys (under 2) tucked them in his shirt and refused to let him have them back. I do not feel comfortable parenting someone else's child in their home. She also told me in prior conversations that she would respect my son's intense cashew allergy yet left cashews on her kitchen counter. She advertises that she offers breakfast but only did so once in our 20 day stay. Staying here also kept me on my toes with my toddler, there were dirty knives left on tables and the edge of the counter (at least 10xs) If you want to cook a meal you will have to do dishes and wipe the counter because not once in my stay did I find the kitchen clean on arrival. She leaves her dog in the house for hours on end and he will whimper at your door if you don't take him out. The smoke detector was hanging from the ceiling by a thread without a battery. It took her 4 days to replace a light bulb in the upstairs bathroom. There is often bags/piles of garbage and recycling both in the kitchen and on the porch.

Her brother-in-law comes and goes from the house to work (he lives in a cottage on the property) and locked us out of the yard even though he knew we were on nearby walking trails. My family had to jump a locked fence to return.

I also have to mention Jesse's lack of professionalism. She sent me a message saying that she felt we bailed to save money. She knows nothing of my family or our financial situation. We made arrangements to meet and discuss the situation and she failed to show. She also noted in my public review things that I think are silly. Yes, Jesse and Dennis, I did loudly reprimand my son, I didn't want him to fall down the stairs, touch the wound on your dog or stab himself with the knives carelessly left around. Otherwise, in my family we make a point to compassionately parent and if this was an issue in some way, you could have discussed it with me in person, while we were staying there. It seems to me we offended you and you were, well searching for criticism back.

    Response from Jesse:

This was my first experience as a host in over two years on airbnb of a personality mismatch, which the review reveals more than the condition of the property. We have deep cleaners that come 2x a month and can direct them to needy areas and have addressed items needing replacement. To clarify, breakfast items are stocked in the fridge (for short-stays of 1 week or less only) but we don't cook for you as our schedules are too busy to coordinate. We are grateful to guests who honor our house rules and alert us of any issues needing addressed as soon as they occur so we can rectify them during your stay.

  • My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Jesse's retreat. Wonderful hiking just out the back door, relaxing patio/outside living area, and all the comforts of home, including the family pets. Great central location to explore from Hood River to The Coast.

  • Amazing, kind, competent, genuine and extraordinarily welcoming. These words describe Jesse Henderson, our host for our 2 nights in Portland. Jesse and her family (husband and two young boys) live in an amazing house and wooded property situated high on a hill next to a rustic, natural park with trails - all with spectacular views out across to downtown Portland. The setting is very relaxed and peaceful. As a guest you’ll have much privacy and yet a quite special view of a young family down to the kids quietly practicing violin, sitting with you for a delicious, organic breakfast before school or other activity. You’ll be trusted with your own key to come and go as you please, to simply relax or to experience the routine of a delightful, home-employed mom and her two well-behaved sons and their dogs. This was a terrific accommodation for our two-day exploration and meetings in Portland. A wealth of local knowledge from the host as well.

  • Jesse was as wonderful a host as you could hope for. She was flexible when I arrived a little early, she bought my friend and I a bottle of wine to welcome us into her home. She greeted us by candlelight on the deck and wonderful conversation when we came back after dinner, and she even provided us with a sound machine to lull us to sleep in her very comfortable library bedroom that she prepared for us.

In the morning there was fresh coffee, farm fresh eggs and turkey bacon ready for us to make, which we enjoyed while spending time talking with her and her adorable kids. I'd recommend her place to anyone looking for a comfortable and quiet get away.

  • My partner and I had such a lovely time here. I think it made my personal list of top five moments in Portland.

Jesse was warm and absolutely generous with her home. Not only did she share wine and freshly picked produce, she prepared breakfast treats for us, too!

The home is within easy driving distance of Downtown Portland, but is nicely tucked away if you're looking for a local escape. Catch the sunset from the porch, if you can, and don't forget to pet the pups on the way out.

I would recommend this place to my closest friends, acquaintances, and everyone in between.

I love guests and have a desire to share the world with my children. A background in event planning, hospitality, journalism and education has given me the opportunity to host in many venues--but my favorite is here at home. As a childbirth educator/doula, I spend my spare time in the garden, hiking and reading about sustainability or meeting the flower fairies in the woods. I love local food feasts, storytelling, yoga, gardening and meeting new people.
