Casa „Oceanside“ was designed with love and function in mind. Cool and open during the hot summer months, but dry and cozy once the rain hits. The two storied concrete bungalow, perfectly tucked away in a lush tropical two acre garden teeming with wildlife can be, whatever you want it to be: A „surfer´s private refuge“, a „birdwatcher´s colourful paradise“, a „quiet girlie getaway“, a „honeymooner´s romantic hideout“ or a „wildlife enthusiat´s research base“. The house sleeps two persons comfortable (kingsize bed), or three at the most (additional sofa). Steps away from Playa Sombrero in the Matapalo Area, Casa „Oceanside“ offers everything you need for a lifetime experience along the jungles of the the prestine Osa Peninsula.
Being so far off the grid, we work with solar power around here. Our panels provide enough energy to power the lights, a refrigerator to keep your drinks cool and your veggies fresh, your laptop and also the B&W stereo system (iPod or iPhone docking station up to G4). Our fresh water source is a deep well. The water gets pumped via a 12v solar pump into the tank ontop of a tower and flows back by gravity into the house. Our water has been tested by a labratory in New York and is 100% drinkable and good for cooking. The fully equipped kitchen comes with all amenities, pots, pans, cuttlery and towels, a 4 range gas-stove, a big „Sundancer“ fridge and a breakfast countertop for 2-4 persons. The storage room that houses the solar batteries and the inverter (converting 12 volt solar power to 110v) also has a security safe for all your valuables such as credit cards, passports, cash money or cameras/phones. The internet out here is weak and patience is key. In case of emergency we can provide a 3G iPhone with a local SIM card to check mails. The restaurant “Alternativas” (walking distance) has a stronger connection and in Puerto Jimenez, the internet cafe “Cafe Sol” provides a fast wireless connection.
A spacious living area with two sofas borders the office space with a big office table, bookshelf with plenty of reading material in german, spanish and english and a reading sofa/day bed combo, that can easily serve as a third bed. The bathroom provides towels, hot water shower, hot water sink and a toilet and was just redone with a very stylish slate floor. Upstairs you will find the masterbedroom with a huge kingsize bed and a super comfy new matress. A tight mashed mosquito net will help to keep insects out during the wet months (July to December). From Januarz until June, you could easily sleep without the net. The Masterbedroom is surrounded by terraces. The roofs of the bathroom and the office also serve as hangout platforms.
A big sundeck with two hammocks and wooden chairs plus table are perfect for that sundown cocktail while you watch howler monkeys up close, crazy squirrel monkeys swiftly leaping great distances from branch to branch, pairs of Scarlett Macaws flying overhead and hummingbirds buzzing close to your head, trying to reach the feeders. If you are lucky you will see an anteater strolling through the garden or a coati (pizote) checking for something to eat in the tropical bush. From the office roof, you can climb onto the roof of the bedroom via a comfortable ladder and gaze at the starts at night. During the summer months it is highly recommendable to throw some pillows up onto the roof and lie there for hours with a cool drink in hand, watching shooting stars, or checking the always visible Orion constellation, the beautiful Pleiades or the southern Zodiac signs. Nothing short of miraculous.
„National Geographic“ once described the Osa Peninsula as „one of the world´s biologically most intense places on earth.“ Once here, you will quickly find out why. A hobby-birdwatcher from Minnesota recently counted 137 different species of birds on our property alone. Add the Otters, playing in our clear water river, that runs through the property, the occasional Sloth, Armadillos, Caimans, Turtles, Toucans, Aracaris, Monkeys, Anteaters, Iguanas or the Sea Turtles, Pelicans, Dolphins and Whales and you get an idea.
As for activities, they are almost too numerous to mention: Perfect Longboard- and easy learning waves for surfing, roll in right infront of the house. We run a small but exquisite surf school business off Playa Sombrero and always have plenty of rental boards to chose from. Grab a board, walk 80 yards to the beach at hightide and enjoy the waves with only you and a few other friendly surfers in the line-up. For the more experienced surfer, world class waves can be found in the close vicinity. Also: sea kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing, SUP paddling, swimming, snorkeling, boogieboarding, sport fishing and boat trips are all possible. We can assist you with your trip into the Corcovado National Park too. Tidepools are waiting a 10 minute walk down the beach. Treeclimbing, jungle hikes, waterfall repelling, horseback riding, bird watching, yoga classes, massages, or just long walks along the wild and empty beaches without ever meeting another soul will make your stay a remarkable memory. Bring sandals, the sand gets very hot.
During your stay, there will be property managment nearby. If you have questions, just ask. Rental Car assitance, medical attention, shopping in Puerto Jimenez, trip booking etc... We will be more than happy to help.

Interaction with Guests
When our house is rented, we move to a small shack on the beach, in walking distance to the house. We are around and can be approached in cases of emergency or if our guests need something or have a question. But at the same time, we make sure, that our guests do not get disturbed and that they enjoy total privacy.
Playa Sombrero, Carbonera and Cabo Matapalo is a small stretch of isolated and lonely beaches with a string of houses, tucked away in the bushes. Nice people and friendly neighbors that know each other for years, look out and help each other.
Getting around here is mostly by private car or by foot along the beach. A rental car is not a must, but does make things easier. There are three rental car agencies in Puerto Jimenez to chose from.
We don´t really have house rules. The only rule we have is, that you enjoy your stay as much as you can. We provide the house, nature does the rest. The Osa is truly amazing.
My wife and I spent a few days at Michelle and Eddy's beach house and had a wonderful time. We chose this location based on the reviews and were not disappointed. It's exactly what you think it will be....amazing! The location is perfect and M & E were so accomodating making sure we had what we needed to ensure an unforgettable time. The Beach House is truly for everyone. From someone that wants a chill quite setting sitting on the sun drenched roof deck, relaxing/surfing on the beach, or venturing into the jungle which is the Osa to see all the wildlife you imagined Costa Rica to have. I feel like not only did we rent the most amazing house on the Osa but met the coolest people in Costa Rica. Thanks Michelle & Eddy and hope we cross paths again!
Eddy and Michelle's fabulous beachfront home reflects their love of the Osa Peninsula and joy in hosting guests from around the world. The property is perfectly designed and not a single detail has been overlooked -- the extremely comfortable bedroom incorporates the rainforest surroundings and the well curated library features books in multiple languages. Their front yard is the breathtaking Playa Sombrero, the perfect location to watch the sun rise or catch a few waves. Eddy and Michelle give guests as much privacy as desired while offering their expert knowledge of the region. We visited an ecolodge and couldn't imagine staying there after spending the week at Eddy and Michelle's home. This is the perfect option for the independent traveler who seeks adventure in the most beautiful corner of Costa Rica. We can't wait to plan our return trip!
Michelle and Eddy's place was total paradise. They were so helpful throughout the planning process, were very attentive when we arrived at their beautiful home, and made our honeymoon unforgettable. The beach, which was just steps from the house, was beautiful, with gorgeous sunrises, soft waves, and not another person in sight. The place itself was gorgeous, tastefully decorated, and felt like home as soon as we walked in. We woke up to howler monkeys, saw so much wildlife around the property (toucans, scarlet macaws, monkeys) and were an easy distance from Corcovado. We can't wait to go back!
We've been back at home after our stay at Michelle & Eddy's home on the Osa Peninsula for three days. Every day we have woken up and thought of things that we miss and looked back on the experience fondly. The location of this home is perfect - situated about 25 minutes outside of Puerto Jimenez in one direction or about 20 minutes from Matapalo (and another hour on to Carate / Le Leona Station at Corcovado Nat Park) in the other direction, the house is in a great, private, quiet location exactly where we wanted to be. Beaches and hiking and wildlife abound in all directions! The house itself is exactly as described and shown in the images here - we were so pleasantly surprised by all of the nice touches and by how well thought-out/designed the house is. Relaxing atop the deck in the hammock was a favorite spot in the afternoons, as was watching the stars and constellations at night from the rooftop - not to mention the spectacular sunsets each morning on the beach. The bed was comfortable, the shower just right, and the kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals for yourself. Waking up each morning to the sounds of wildlife was surprisingly wonderful - as was falling asleep in an area free of light and noise pollution. Additionally the "hang out" area that Eddy has recently constructed near the beach was a great spot to sit and feel the breeze from the ocean - we spent quite a bit of time there on the cushions watching or listening to the waves! We enjoyed learning about (and experiencing for ourselves!) what it's like to stay in a home that is "off the grid" - you'll be inspired like we were to try to implement some of their practices at home. We felt completely safe in this home (and appreciated the added security of safe for personal belongings). Beyond all of this, we had the comfort of knowing that Michelle and Eddy were nearby if we had questions. I can't thank them enough for all of their thoughtful suggestions and tips that helped us prepare for this trip. I'd happily go back to Osa and stay in this home again! I recommend that you do too! Book it!
We had an absolutely wonderful time in Eddy and Michelle's house on Sombrero Beach. The location is phenomenal: deserted beaches, rock formations, dense rainforest. We saw monkeys, scarlet macaws, iguanas and more on our daily walks on the beach. The drive from San Jose is long but gorgeous, the landscape becomes lusher as one drives south and the Osa Peninsula is spectacualrly beautiful. The house is extremely spacious, right on the beach, with a beautiful bedroom and sundeck surrounded by trees. We were awoken by the sounds of howler monkeys in the nearby trees! Eddy and Michelle were wonderful hosts and made us feel extremely welcomed and cared for. It was a true getaway. You should be aware of a few issues (taking into consideration that we come from Manhattan): the house has no window screens so you will need to get comfortable with various insects and bugs; at the time of our stay there was no funcional internet service (but a newly openned cafe within walking distance reportedly had wifi); if you plan to cook, purchase your supplies before you leave Puerto Jimenez as you will find very little to buy near Playa Sombrero. In short, this place is spectacular and highly recommended!
Fantastic vacation made even better by our awesome hosts Michelle and Eddy. We could have just spent our whole time chilling at the beach house watching and listening to the wildlife. We didn't because there are so many adventures to be had within a short drive...the national park tour was awesome (which they helped organize) and the surrounding beaches were amazing and private. Would definitely recommend it to our friends going to Costa Rica.
