About This Listing
Casa „Oceanside“ was designed with love and function in mind. Cool and open during the hot summer months, but dry and cozy once the rain hits. The two storied concrete bungalow, perfectly tucked away in a lush tropical two acre garden teeming with wildlife can be, whatever you want it to be: A „surfer´s private refuge“, a „birdwatcher´s colourful paradise“, a „quiet girlie getaway“, a „honeymooner´s romantic hideout“ or a „wildlife enthusiat´s research base“. The house sleeps two persons comfortable (kingsize bed), or three at the most (additional sofa). Steps away from Playa Sombrero in the Matapalo Area, Casa „Oceanside“ offers everything you need for a lifetime experience along the jungles of the the prestine Osa Peninsula.
Being so far off the grid, we work with solar power around here. Our panels provide enough energy to power the lights, a refrigerator to keep your drinks cool and your veggies fresh, your laptop and also the B&W stereo system (iPod or iPhone docking station up to G4). Our fresh water source is a deep well. The water gets pumped via a 12v solar pump into the tank ontop of a tower and flows back by gravity into the house. Our water has been tested by a labratory in New York and is 100% drinkable and good for cooking. The fully equipped kitchen comes with all amenities, pots, pans, cuttlery and towels, a 4 range gas-stove, a big „Sundancer“ fridge and a breakfast countertop for 2-4 persons. The storage room that houses the solar batteries and the inverter (converting 12 volt solar power to 110v) also has a security safe for all your valuables such as credit cards, passports, cash money or cameras/phones. The internet out here is weak and patience is key. In case of emergency we can provide a 3G iPhone with a local SIM card to check mails. The restaurant “Alternativas” (walking distance) has a stronger connection and in Puerto Jimenez, the internet cafe “Cafe Sol” provides a fast wireless connection.
A spacious living area with two sofas borders the office space with a big office table, bookshelf with plenty of reading material in german, spanish and english and a reading sofa/day bed combo, that can easily serve as a third bed. The bathroom provides towels, hot water shower, hot water sink and a toilet and was just redone with a very stylish slate floor. Upstairs you will find the masterbedroom with a huge kingsize bed and a super comfy new matress. A tight mashed mosquito net will help to keep insects out during the wet months (July to December). From Januarz until June, you could easily sleep without the net. The Masterbedroom is surrounded by terraces. The roofs of the bathroom and the office also serve as hangout platforms.
A big sundeck with two hammocks and wooden chairs plus table are perfect for that sundown cocktail while you watch howler monkeys up close, crazy squirrel monkeys swiftly leaping great distances from branch to branch, pairs of Scarlett Macaws flying overhead and hummingbirds buzzing close to your head, trying to reach the feeders. If you are lucky you will see an anteater strolling through the garden or a coati (pizote) checking for something to eat in the tropical bush. From the office roof, you can climb onto the roof of the bedroom via a comfortable ladder and gaze at the starts at night. During the summer months it is highly recommendable to throw some pillows up onto the roof and lie there for hours with a cool drink in hand, watching shooting stars, or checking the always visible Orion constellation, the beautiful Pleiades or the southern Zodiac signs. Nothing short of miraculous.
„National Geographic“ once described the Osa Peninsula as „one of the world´s biologically most intense places on earth.“ Once here, you will quickly find out why. A hobby-birdwatcher from Minnesota recently counted 137 different species of birds on our property alone. Add the Otters, playing in our clear water river, that runs through the property, the occasional Sloth, Armadillos, Caimans, Turtles, Toucans, Aracaris, Monkeys, Anteaters, Iguanas or the Sea Turtles, Pelicans, Dolphins and Whales and you get an idea.
As for activities, they are almost too numerous to mention: Perfect Longboard- and easy learning waves for surfing, roll in right infront of the house. We run a small but exquisite surf school business off Playa Sombrero and always have plenty of rental boards to chose from. Grab a board, walk 80 yards to the beach at hightide and enjoy the waves with only you and a few other friendly surfers in the line-up. For the more experienced surfer, world class waves can be found in the close vicinity. Also: sea kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing, SUP paddling, swimming, snorkeling, boogieboarding, sport fishing and boat trips are all possible. We can assist you with your trip into the Corcovado National Park too. Tidepools are waiting a 10 minute walk down the beach. Treeclimbing, jungle hikes, waterfall repelling, horseback riding, bird watching, yoga classes, massages, or just long walks along the wild and empty beaches without ever meeting another soul will make your stay a remarkable memory. Bring sandals, the sand gets very hot.
During your stay, there will be property managment nearby. If you have questions, just ask. Rental Car assitance, medical attention, shopping in Puerto Jimenez, trip booking etc... We will be more than happy to help.

Interaction with Guests
When our house is rented, we move to a small shack on the beach, in walking distance to the house. We are around and can be approached in cases of emergency or if our guests need something or have a question. But at the same time, we make sure, that our guests do not get disturbed and that they enjoy total privacy.
Playa Sombrero, Carbonera and Cabo Matapalo is a small stretch of isolated and lonely beaches with a string of houses, tucked away in the bushes. Nice people and friendly neighbors that know each other for years, look out and help each other.
Getting around here is mostly by private car or by foot along the beach. A rental car is not a must, but does make things easier. There are three rental car agencies in Puerto Jimenez to chose from.
We don´t really have house rules. The only rule we have is, that you enjoy your stay as much as you can. We provide the house, nature does the rest. The Osa is truly amazing.
I don't know what to say was the best part of our stay at Michelle and Eddy's Beach House - maybe it was hanging with the 3 different types of monkeys that chilled next to the house every evening, sipping coffee on the sundeck in the early morning hours listening to the birds, playing in the surf, feeding Django treats (shhhh don't tell Eddy and Michelle!), lying in the hammocks with the macaws overhead as the tide came in, cooking our very first red snapper in the fully equipped kitchen, having cocktails at the local resort for date night, M+E offering to book our excursions like kayak fishing and a national park tour for us, listening to the jungle quiet down for the night from the open bedroom, bumping into town for supplies or getting to know the people in the neighborhood and in town.... I just can't pick. We had a fabulous time on the beach, at the house, hiking to the nearby waterfall, talking with Michelle and Eddy about the surf, relaxing, and finding out just what Pura Vida means.
Michelle and Eddy walked us through every single step of getting to the beach house. When we first booked the house, we didn't worry about how we would get there - we just knew we would! When you book, M+E will have suggestions for flying or driving into the Osa, how to get around, what to do while you are there, and provide key tips on making your stay at the Beach House wonderful. Listen to them! They're the experts. And book with them, they can often get things at a better rate than the vendors would charge in town.
We came during the peak of the dry season (the end of April). Eddy kept apologizing for the garden looking 'ugly' but to us it was SO FABULOUS! At the end of the week, Eddy took us around the garden for an in-depth tour of the plants and we got weepy as we knew we had to leave it soon. The garden was full of little lizards, halloween crabs, birds, flowers - just cannot imagine how beautiful it will be during rainy season!
Michelle and Eddy are absolutely wonderful. They gave us tons of space to roam around (they stay in the little beach hut close to the beach). We would wander over to them at the tiny beach house daily with little questions and they would be so happy to oblige us! It was so refreshing chatting with them, learning from them, and enjoying their company with a few beers! We cannot thank them enough for the MAGICAL time we had. It really was magical.
So in closing, don't rent the beach house - because we want it (and Michelle and Eddy and Django and the Monkeys!) all to ourselves! But when you do rent it, you'll know what we're talking about, and feel the same way, too.
Dear Lara and Dear Phillip,
Thank you so much for your kind words. The truth is, that so far we never had a bad experience with airbnb. You and all our guests that came before you, were just beautiful people and such a pleasure to take care of.
You really made our job very easy. It was wonderful to have you and we are looking forward to hopefully see you again soon.
Django says hi to Arthur!
Blessings and Pura Vida from the beautiful Osa.
Michelle and Eddy
Pura Vida!
Directions to Casa Oceanside say to honk our horn after pulling into the driveway. A minute or so later Michelle and Eddy come walking to us out of the jungle like a couple of friendly spider monkeys. (My wife can't believe I wrote that but I mean it in the very best way possible.). We were given a thorough tour of the house which is fantastic. All electricity is solar and very adequate. The Mediterranean architecture has a minimalist feel but just right for the jungle/beach setting. The house is a 20 minute drive from the airport on a bumpy dirt road. After you go, you hope it stays that way. You see the ocean on the drive and pass by farms and go through jungle. I saw my first wild monkey on their property just as we pulled in. It's a surfers haven but not crowded in the least. They are on Playa Sombrero which is a big bay. When walking out on the beach, you scan the entire bay and will see the most amazing beach ever and most times not see a single person. Michelle and Eddy were so nice and helpful and helped arrange activities.
Our 1st trip to Costa Rica and what an incredible experience! We can't say enough how amazing not only the property was (which is even better than listed and described) but Eddy & Michelle were amazing! They give "5-Star" hospitality new meaning. We had lots of privacy but they were also close by for any questions or help or just to chat. We felt so welcome and right at home. We're from the dry Canadian prairies so hot & humid weather is usually overwhelming but the house was very comfortable and the whole experience was refreshing. Eddy & Michelle were great for helping to arrange excursions and giving great suggestions on local activities (Martina's bar up the road - phenomenal food), river hike to the waterfall - you'll definitely want to do that; day hike through Corcovado (Bolivar our guide was great) - yes, you'll want to do that; and the walks on the beach for km's and hardly seeing anyone...pretty surreal. My husband loved learning to surf and is now hooked. Bring watershoes for walking on the beach - makes it a lot easier on the clay "shelf". Swimming: there was a great spot about a 10 min walk down the beach that was great for swimming & light waves for bodysurfing. For being in a rainforest climate - bugs weren't even an issue. We didn't need bug spray but you WILL need sunscreen - we don't usually burn & normal stuff we use for hot climates wasn't enough coverage and bring your own: sunscreen is considerably pricey from the local store. Internet access was a bit challenging (we didn't really miss it and if needed email access - there was a place close by you could get wifi connection); phone coverage & texting (iPhone 5S) worked great. Eddy & Michelle - thank you so much for sharing your "world" with us - we can't wait to come back!
My wife and I spent a few days at Michelle and Eddy's beach house and had a wonderful time. We chose this location based on the reviews and were not disappointed. It's exactly what you think it will be....amazing! The location is perfect and M & E were so accomodating making sure we had what we needed to ensure an unforgettable time. The Beach House is truly for everyone. From someone that wants a chill quite setting sitting on the sun drenched roof deck, relaxing/surfing on the beach, or venturing into the jungle which is the Osa to see all the wildlife you imagined Costa Rica to have. I feel like not only did we rent the most amazing house on the Osa but met the coolest people in Costa Rica. Thanks Michelle & Eddy and hope we cross paths again!
Eddy and Michelle's fabulous beachfront home reflects their love of the Osa Peninsula and joy in hosting guests from around the world. The property is perfectly designed and not a single detail has been overlooked -- the extremely comfortable bedroom incorporates the rainforest surroundings and the well curated library features books in multiple languages. Their front yard is the breathtaking Playa Sombrero, the perfect location to watch the sun rise or catch a few waves. Eddy and Michelle give guests as much privacy as desired while offering their expert knowledge of the region. We visited an ecolodge and couldn't imagine staying there after spending the week at Eddy and Michelle's home. This is the perfect option for the independent traveler who seeks adventure in the most beautiful corner of Costa Rica. We can't wait to plan our return trip!
