We are a married couple with 2 sons aged 22 and 20 living away from home, so we now have 2 extra rooms we have fixed up for airbnb guests! Guests have their own shared bathroom, shower & toilet seperate to ours. We have a large, comfy warm room downstairs with a flat screen TV, as well as free Wi-Fi. Mark is a New Zealand Native and I am originally from the USA with dual New Zealand & USA citizenship. My husband's work is with intellectually handicapped adults and I just finished my PhD, plus I work part time at the University's Medical library.
We live in a very nice neighbourhood called Opoho, situated up in the hills overlooking the sea and the Botanic gardens, 3 blocks away. I am an artist and our house is very much "an artist's home", which is hard to describe - you'll just have to see! We have hens in the back yard garden and behind us is a small pasture bordered by eucalyptus trees.
Our neighbour grazes his sheep there. Our yard is filled with song birds like Tuis and Bell-Birds; their songs are the only noise we get up here. We are also a 20 minute walk from the University of Otago, Dunedin's new stadium and a 30 minute walk from town. Busses run regularly from our neighbourhood, the bus stop is 2 blocks away, town is 10 minutes by bus.
We are happy to share our kitchen and dining area with guests, and we have a commercial sized washer & dryer for laundry. We have a beautiful large deck with a view of the ocean and the air is so clean here, you can see clear across town to the hills on the other side. On a clear night you can easily see the Milky Way and the brightest stars in the southern sky. Our sunrises and sunsets are unparallelled in beauty!
Our favourite travel destination is anywhere on the South Island, and we love to help guests plan their itineraries because we know the best spots! For a little extra we can pick you up and drop you off at the airport or take you on sight-seeing tours in our 7 seater van.
Mark and I are in and out all day so we'll be around if there are any problems but we won't breathe down your necks. We love showing off our part of the world to visitors, so please come and stay- you are welcome here!
When we arrived it was as if we had already met each other. Margie and mark were very kind with our baby. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom nice. Definately recommend to anyone!
Margi and her husband are great hosts.
If you are looking for a good blend of american and kiwi hospitality mixed with awesome view and confortable accomodation this is the right place to stay.
Margi and Mark are lovely and naturally hospitable people who go out of their way to make you feel at home and have interesting stories to share about their family life. The room is very comfortable and, like the rest of the house, decorated in Margi's distinctive creative style. The neighbourhood is a fairly long uphill walk out of town but there are door-to-door buses from the Octagon and university area, and the views from the room are amazing!
Margi have a very colourful house with impressive views over Dunedin. Very welcoming couple and I'd recommend the property to anyone. Thanks a lot.
What an excellent host Margi is! My stay couldn't have been smoother - she replies promptly to emails, was there to greet me when I arrived, made sure I had everything I needed, recommended a spot for dinner, and is fantastic company as well. 10/10 would stay again!
Margi's place is a piece of art! We felt very comfortable staying there and we appreciated her being able to accommodate us at such late notice. We enjoying chatting with her and she was full of interesting stories. The bed was very comfy and the electric blanket was amazing on a cold night. Thanks :)
We had a delightful stay with Margi and Mark. The night view from our room over the city was lovely. Their home is full of her fascinating art inspired by family and travel around the planet. Hand painted walls ceiling and mosaic floors are an added treat. Discussions ranged widely from politics to environment and beyond. The well equipped kitchen and friendly atmosphere make this a stop to not be missed. Botanic garden is outstanding just down the street and don't miss the Northern Royal albatross at the end of the peninsula. Take the cliff road for spectacular views.
Margi was able to accommodate us super last minute on New Years Eve. We had a great time staying with her and the room was very comfortable and had a great view of the city. Margi was an excellent host and we had a lovely time chatting and laughing with here.
