  • A nice inexpensive place to stay, well located for going to the north or south of the island. It is a bit close to the highway so it can be a little noisy in the morning. Dave is very helpful with information and will arrange outings if you are interested. He also was kind enough to provide us with eggs from his chickens.

  • We stayed about a week at Dave’s, in two different units. Dave was extremely helpful in accommodating a change in plans that we had and saved us a lot of stress and money. Dave’s location is great. His place is situated off the main road north, outside of Anahoa. Just north of Kapaa where you can shop, eat or swim and just in proximity to Kauai’s beautiful North shore. It is an easy drive to all locations on Kauai. He has 4 units spread over a good amount of land and each provides visual and sound privacy. Two beautiful beaches are within walking distance and many more just a short drive away. Our first few nights was in a Home with a View unit which was similar to an efficiency. The unit is a well decorated, one room set up which included a very comfortable bed, well-stocked kitchenette and full frig. The shower and potty were nicely isolated and private. This unit had a nice covered sitting area overlooking a picturesque mountain. This was helpful as we had a few days of rain. Our second stay of a few days was in the Coco Cottage. This is a stand-alone, very cute, small house that has the bedroom in a loft and an attached outside bath with plenty of privacy. The interior is beautifully decorated and there was a giant flat screen TV which provided great viewing of the Olympics. We enjoyed the private, yet open air shower, but the walk out to the bath at night, in rain, was a bit of an adventure. This unit has a big kitchen area which is also well stocked. We especially enjoyed the fresh eggs and veggies Dave shared with us. Dave’s location is close to the airport. He is a warm, generous person who maintains all his units in very clean, good condition. We hope to stay here again and wish Dave and his family the best.

  • Dave was a great host! He answered all of our many questions before our trip and was very helpful during our stay. When we wanted to talk to him, he was easy to find:). It was fun feeling like a local living in such a clean, cozy and comfortable "home." The bed was comfy. The kitchen worked great for us. The animals were fun to visit. The mountain view was incredible! We rented a car from a contact of Dave's, so with the money we saved on housing and transportation, we were able to do some fun activities that we may have passed on otherwise. Loved the atmosphere and the location of the Honeymoon Hideaway...the halfway point to both sides of the island. Dave was very willing and able to get us involved with activities, but we had made reservations or the weather didn't cooperate. Wish we'd contacted him first! And, Dave, I did get to snorkel in Poipu on that drizzly day...and had a blast!!:) Thanks for a great first experience with airbnb.com!!

  • My husband and I spent 9 nights at Dave's Honeymoon Hideaway in mid-January. The place is absolutely as advertised. We wanted a central location where we could kick back and have a beer before getting a good night of rest, and the room was exactly what we needed. We spent all day each day exploring the island, and the place is perfectly located for getting around to all the sights on the island. We made sure to clean up after breakfast and rinse out all empty containers before placing them in the recycle bin so as to not attract uninvited guests, and didn't experience any issues with critters. Dave led us on a wonderful morning of hikes and swimming in places off the beaten path, which was a special treat. You should take him up on any adventures offered as he can give you a local's perspective. This is the perfect stay for those who are planning a vacation focused on seeking out adventures and nature instead of sitting around all day inside a room or hanging in a resort. You will spends your vacation money on a car and on fun things like kayaking or paddle boarding rather than blowing it on a place to sleep. A big win from my perspective! The price point for this room is totally fair and we would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thanks Dave, keep up the good work and aloha!

  • Dave's property is a beautiful one, and the mountain view you wake up to is pretty spectacular. Loved the happy goats & pigs and enjoyed an egg from his chickens for breakfast! He conducts really cool excursions - though it didn't work with my schedule, they sounded like an awesome opportunity to see some hidden gems of Kauai. The bathroom layout is a bit odd for sure, as you can see the toilet from the bed (though there's a small moveable partition), but I had fair warning as I had read previous reviews. The location of the property is in beautiful Anahola, and though the walk to the beach isn't that short or flat, getting up early to run down there for sunrise is well worth it. Dave's got great local knowledge and staying there provided a great (and non-touristy) base from which to go explore Kauai.

  • We had a very relaxing and lovely stay at the Honeymoon Hideaway. That being said, this is certainly not a place for everyone. The, umm, unique, bathroom situation requires a comfortable couple and some agreed-upon arrangements. Also, we did see some critters during our stay, so you have to understand you are in the country and there are bugs about. BUT the place is clean and as long as you keep it so, you shouldn't have an issue. The animals provide a lovely diversion to go visit, however, we never did snag an egg on our visit. Guess the chickens were tapped. Also, it was definitely farm-ier than I expected and we did get some skeeter bites and mud on our shoes down by the coop. The garden was lovely, but not too much in there in season when we were there. You are really in seclusion up at the house and as long as that's what you're looking for, then it's great. We had a fun time taking a moonlight walk (with the help of a flashlight -- it's DARK up there!) and stargazing. The beach that is walkable is a nice one -- though down a bit of a hill, so it's a bit of a challenge if you are expecting to just stroll up to it). The view of the hills/mountains from your deck are terrific and yes, you DO have a very small view of the ocean from there as well. Dave was a very gracious host, accommodating and available. HE was working around the place most of the time we were there and it was obvious he loved the grounds and being where he was. It was also nice to be offered the chance at a river tour, but unfortunately our flight left too early for us to take him up on it.
Overall, I would say if you have a rugged sense of adventure and are looking for peace and quiet, consider the Honeymoon Hideaway. But probably NOT on your honeymoon, unless you are very comfy with each other already!
The nearby beach at Kialea and town of Kapa'a were good places to spend some time as well.

    Response from Dave:

Well, I just lost another booking because of this review.......Kauai is the wettest spot in the World, more than the Congo, more than the Amazon and more than any other place on the planet. During Nov - Jan we can get more than 400 inches of rain..So, now if you are a bug spider or any other of GODS creatures, where would you go for cover and protection? Yes,you are right all the bugs and spiders on Kauai come to my home during the rainy season, so its probably better that you go to another location during your stay here? Because at another location they have no Spiders or Bugs. All the other people that did not mention Spiders or bugs in their reviews about my homes were just lying.. And also don't forget all the mosquitoes on Kauai will be here too.... Another point to remember, if you go down to our Organic gardens to get fresh produce you will also get your feet very very very dirty and that will be very very very bad..Hope this Review was able to help you make the right decision about coming to Kauai

  • If you want to experience the island more like the locals, this is the place for you. It is not a hotel or resort with manicured grounds. So if that is what you want, keep looking. What you get is an affordable, clean and nicely maintained efficiency apartment on a 4 acre tropically landscaped farm with animals, an organic garden, and a spectacular view of the mountains. It is a perfect home base for your daily adventures. Located on the northeast side of the island just off the main highway north of Kapaa near Anahola, it provides easy access to all sides of the island and it is just minutes from all the north side beaches and the town of Kapaa. My wife and I are economically minded and appreciated being able to cook our breakfast each morning, pack our backpacks with snacks for lunch and then enjoy a nice dinner out. Because it was so affordable, we were also able to take advantage of some of the more expensive activities offered on the island like the sunset cruise on the Napoli coast and a day trip to Oahu. Again, the accommodations are not fancy which is why we gave it a four-star rating, but are homey, comfortable, and more than adequate for an adventurous and pleasurable stay in Kauai. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it.

  • This was exactly what I needed. I was travelling by myself to get some alone time away from a busy life and this was the perfect hideaway. Located in a beautiful garden surrounded by nature, the beach only a 20 minute walk away from the house. Dave was very nice and welcoming. Although I didn't take advantage of it, the fact that his fruit and vegetable garden and the eggs from his chicken are available and free, I think is great. The room is super neat and clean, the bed comfortable and the kitchen has everything that is needed. I can highly recommend this place and would definitely stay there again!

  • This was a last minute booking! Dave was always quick at responding to me. His place is great! It's a farm like atmosphere. My room was big and clean. The bed was particularly comfortable and I slept really well. His place is in a nice location half way between Kapaa and the North coast.. The. Location is stunningly beautiful. Dave was very nice, j didn't see or talk to him very much, but he was totally great!

  • Dave and he's family are amazing people and hosts, we felt right at home! Their place is easy findable and 40 min drive of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Great hikes and nature everywhere! They posted what seemed great trips at very reasonable prices on little notes next to your door, also fresh fruit, veggies and eggs from their all bio-farm for freezzi! No trips for us because we were to busy chasing the sun.. Six days there, three days rain! Hey it's not called the green island for nothing! Don't let that spoil it for you, Kauai is AMAZING. And thanks to Dave and he's fam even more...
