We had a very nice time in Apalachicola, and St. George Island.
We could have shared a few ideas for our host, for future reference, but we did not meet her.
We will return to the area, for more bicycle adventure, and the oysters where so, so very fresh.
We had a great two night stay at Marisa's Retreat in Paradise. Marisa was kind and welcoming. The apartment was clean, comfortable and spacious (it's actually considerably larger than my studio in San Francisco). The location is great, do we didn't have to drive anywhere. The apartment is less than a 10 minute walk to all the restaurants and bars of Apalachicola (along the river), and maybe a 15 minute walk to some lovely parks along the bay. We would definitely stay here again!
We booked this these accommodations during the "off season" and were quite disappointed. For the first time in all our travels over the years staying in a multitude of bed and breakfasts, and as budget travelers, we left a day early and found another place to stay in the area. When we arrived, we called Marisa since no one was there and when we entered the detached apartment in their back yard, the smell of chlorine bleach was so powerful we immediately opened the windows and figured out how to turn the fan on in the air conditioning unit. Danny, her husband stopped by and we told him about it, but he did not offer any suggestions. We also asked him about the bed linens since there was no mattress pad or extra blankets since it was cool, but he said the bed never had a pad. We were able to stay in the room with the ventilation but the smell was overwhelming for quite some time so we did not unpack any clothes. The third day was rainy and we were not able to open windows, the smell was still lingering, so we decided to leave. It seems that the issue is the mold around the shower and the baseboards, so the bleach must have been used in an attempt to clean it off. We called Marisa and told her we left and why. We also discussed other issues such as no smoke detector/alarm, the debris in the yard and unusable chairs, and no wall plate on an electrical outlet. We did leave a llst of other issues such as fixing the floor tiles, providing instructions for using the tv set up, and cleaning the soiled upholstery on the ottoman/table and winged back chairs. We suggested they might want to put a small screen around the hot water tank and pipes in the corner of the bathroom, and a valance around the sink in the kitchen to hide the exposed plumbing. We made it very clear to them that the primary issue was the chlorine bleach smell and mold; we said that a refund would be appreciated. We did contact Airbnb and are waiting for their reply.
We had a blast at Marisa's place! Came to town for the Oyster Cook-off and could not have been in a better location. The apartment/guest house was the perfect size for me and my husband, with plenty of space and all the amenities for a weekend away. We even had friends over to sit around the awesome fire pit in the yard - so much better than being restricted to a hotel room or restaurant for socializing. We didn't get to see Marisa much because she was busy with the Cook-off, but the place was ready when we arrived and she gave us plenty of instructions/directions before we arrived. We will definitely make this a regular trip destination in the future!!
nice little home away from home. walking distance to wonderful artsy, funky downtown, great food and good people. Hosts helpful but not intrusive. I will return.
A great place! Easily could accommodate 3 people. ...very clean, and thoughtfully laid out. ...We made friends with the chickens and one of the cats that frequent the backyard. ...Location is perfect for a quick walk to any of the local food spots. ...And there's a good WIFI signal!!! Great place.
These guys are great. A fun place to stay, neighborhood/town is dog friendly. The guest house is comfortable, quiet and has a workable kitchen area (use to cook local seafood available fresh everyday). The outdoor fire pit is fun in the evenings. Appalach is a really freindly town with great food and lots of natural places to visit and enjoy.
We had a wonderful time in Apalachicola! Marisa and Don were both welcoming and helpful. Our internet connection didn't work very well at first (which we didn't really mind...such a relief to be disconnected!) but Don fixed it, so no problems the rest of our stay. It was great to be able to walk in every direction, to downtown, to the Orman House, the harbor, or to just stroll around the neighborhood with our dog. The cabin had everything we needed and the people we met were very pleasant and great conversationalists. Apalachicola proves that authenticity still exists. The best seaside town in Florida!
Kristian, Daisy and I had a great stay at Marisa's. Apalachicola was very quiet in December - just the relaxing getaway our little family needed! The house is close to town and the beach at St. George, we enjoyed walking the beach each morning and the downtown each afternoon. Loved how pet friendly all the shops were and all the delicious food options! We hope to return again when the brewery is open! Thank you for being so welcoming!
This COTTAGE and its HOSTS were amazing. Very private - yet close to the main attractions as we were visiting for the 50th Annual Seafood Festival. We were able to WALK everywhere and to everything... and then some... The community and its people are the friendliest in the nation. The restaurants and quaint shops are awesome. Can't wait to go back to enjoy this Retreat in Paradise.
