About This Listing
Two-bedroom ranch duplex with private back yard with bamboo. Close to bike path, park and supermarket. Community exercise room. Only two miles from downtown Eugene and three miles to the University of Oregon. Large windows and full kitchen.
The Bamboo Retreat is an apartment in a ranch style duplex in Eugene, Oregon, USA. Your home away from home has two private bedrooms and the place is all yours, completely furnished. Big living room windows and a sliding glass door out to the bamboo garden welcome the morning sun facing east.
You have full use of the kitchen, dishes and cooking supplies. A simple breakfast is included with your stay. Help yourself to coffee or tea and cold cereal with almond milk or hot oatmeal. The entire apartment is normally available for up to three nights in a row but I can make exceptions, just ask. If you’re looking for a longer stay and could do with just one room and share kitchen and bathroom with your host, see my separate listing for Bamboo Retreat—Great Wave Room.
The Bamboo Retreat is three miles from University of Oregon and two miles from downtown, just steps from Amazon Bike/Walking/Running Path. The Amazon Path will take you along Amazon Creek to Downtown Eugene to the east or West Eugene Wetlands to the west. You have wireless internet and a gas barbecue at your disposal and an outdoor table and chairs on the back deck. You're located within Westmoreland Village Apartments and have access to the exercise room with running and weight machines one block away and credit card laundry machines just next door. I can provide you with laundry soap. We have apartment complex amenities, but the Bamboo Retreat is tucked away and basically feels like being in a small private home.
You're about .4 miles (650 meters) or under 10 minutes walk to Albertsons (supermarket and pharmacy), Starbucks (coffee), Subway (sandwiches), Sequential Biofuels (gas/petrol and bio diesel), Top City (frozen yogurt), and Westmoreland Park (walking paths and Frisbee golf). The bus stop is less than a block away and the Lane Transit District (LTD) bus will get you to downtown Eugene in about 15 minutes. My bike is usually available for your use.
The Great Wave Room and the Forest Room have queen-sized beds that will fit up to two people each. The love seat in the living room also folds out into a hydabed that sleeps one. You could put up to five people in here. Sheets are always on the futon in the Great Wave Room and the bed in the Forest room. Please let me know in advance if you need sheets on the hydabed. The regular beds have duvets. Instead of a traditional top sheet, the sheet is like an enormous pillow case covering the entire duvet.
This is a green home with thick insulation and double-pane windows so it is cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. Each room has its own heater. Food scraps go in the compost and plastic, aluminum, paper and steel in the recycling. The kitchen has a dishwasher and built-in microwave for your use. The water heater is small and efficient but you may need to space out showers if you need to take long ones. If you need to take a bath more than 4 inches deep, you’ll need to boil some water on the stove to put in with the water from the tap.
I'm an avid hiker and have a collection of hiking guide books available for our use as well as board games Pictionary and Scrabble. If I'm going hiking, you're welcome to join me, or I can also connect you to my friends through our meetup hiking group that usually has about three outings a week.
In keeping with many generations of tradition in my family in China and Hawaii, I ask guests to remove shoes at the door to keep the home clean inside.
Standard check in is after 3pm and standard check out is by 11am so I can get the place as clean for my next guests as it is for you. I very frequently have back to back bookings with different guests checking out and in the same day. If you have a specific need for different check in or check out times, I will do what I can to accommodate you. This is my home when I don't have guests. When I have guests, I am staying a short distance away and am available by phone to help with whatever you need.
I've traveled to 20 countries and lived in Spain, France, Mexico, Taiwan and New Zealand and love to host travelers from the US and around the world. Welcome! Bienvenidos! Bienvenue! Haere mai! Huanying! I'm not gay, but am gay friendly.
Entire home and yard, one parking space. Community amenities including laundry room and exercise room.
Interaction with Guests
When booking Bamboo Retreat--Eugene Sanctuary, guests will have full privacy. I will be staying elsewhere nearby, but normally we will interact by phone or through Airbnb unless something specific comes up.
Bamboo Retreat is on the Amazon bike and walking path that will take you to downtown Eugene or West Eugene Wetlands.
LTD (Eugene City Bus) stop is about 200 feet away from the door. It will get you to downtown bus station and you can get public transportation anywhere from there. There is usually a bike available for guest use as well.
Other Things to Note
Help yourselves to the soap and shampoo in the shower. There are extra blankets and towels for you in the drawers of the Great Wave Room. You are welcome to use the printer/scanner that connects to your laptop by usb and the monitor that connects by hdmi or vga. There are also small speakers to connect to your own device.
Please be considerate of neighbors on other side of duplex: no loud noise.
Apartment is not set up for pets.
Please no smoking anywhere on premises, including outdoors.
Please be diligent about locking all doors.
Please clean up after yourself.
Please remove your shoes at the door.
Check with me before inviting additional visitors over. You need permission first.
I am strict about check in and check out times. I often have back to back bookings and need time between check in and check out for cleaning. If there is an extraordinary circumstance, you must ask in advance to stay beyond 11am checkout and if it is available, there will be a $50 extra charge to stay until 2pm.
We had a great time staying in Sándor's house. It was very tidy and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast was included which was a great benefit! Sándor was very helpful and accommodating!
The place was ready on time, clean, and cozy. Thanks Sandor!
Sandor is a stellar AirBnB host who has gone above and beyond in numerous ways to make guests' stay easy, convenient, and comfortable. From external signage for identifying the house to free breakfast food and drinks, he offers an easy experience. Three of us stayed for two night during a conference at UofO. The house is a straight shot no turns only 10 minutes from campus. The house is clean and organized and all the needs are covered. I highly recommend and will stay with Sandor again in the future!
Sandor provided a welcoming environment that spoke to the nature of our visit; a couples weekend retreat. The house was neatly maintained and furnished, and seemed centrally located to all potential things of interest in Eugene. The host was easy to get a hold of and talk to, and provided amenities above and beyond what might be expected in these situations; a simple breakfast was even provided for us. This was our first Airbnb experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed the sense of staying in a home rather than a hotel! If given the chance again, we would definitely chose Airbnb, and Sandor's hospitality, for our next weekend away.
Simple, comfortable place to stay. Very helpful and responsive host. A great value and convenient location. We'll be back!

About the Host, Sándor
The Eagle Scout and Fulbright Scholar your mother warned you about. The only Chinese Hungarian American New Zealander. Investment manager by day. Writer, filmmaker and real estate investor nights and weekends. 39. Love hiking, documentaries, cooking, travel. I'm tidy and have a good credit score. Any search engine will tell you plenty about me. I'm an outgoing introvert which means I enjoy talking with people but need my quiet time.
I have traveled the world and lived in Spain, France, Mexico, Taiwan and New Zealand and love meeting and hosting people from everywhere. I speak fluent French and Spanish and basic Chinese, Portuguese and Maori. I love outdoor adventure and am out hiking in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter.
I am one of the organizers of a local meetup hiking group and you're welcome to come on our adventures if you're staying with me in Eugene. I've been hiking with new meetup friends in San Francisco, Portland, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Hong Kong and always had a blast. If I'm not hiking, I'm often doing hot yoga: an hour of nonstop motion in a room at 100 degrees (38 degrees C) and 95% humidity.
For me the best food is what I've fished or foraged, hunted or harvested with my own hands. I used to work on a cooking show in NZ and especially love shellfish harvested fresh from the ocean and mushrooms and berries picked right out of the forest.
I did a documentary about my walk across 300 miles of New Zealand. Working on a new one about my upcoming walk of the Oregon Trail.
Favorite films: Trainspotting, The Corporation, Genghis Blues, Dr. Strangelove
TV (I don't have a TV but occasionally watch online): Deadwood, Wagon Train, This American Life, Longmire, Dual Survival
Books: Outliers (Malcom Gladwell), Catch-22 (Joseph Heller), Candide (Voltaire), Ballad of the Whisky Robber (Julian Rubenstein)
Listening: I don't listen to that much music, but like good storytelling, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash, Greg Brown. I love public radio, NPR, Radio France, Radio New Zealand, BBC. I especially love audiobooks and love how smartphones will do text to speech and read out books that are not yet available in audio format.
Real estate is another passion of mine and I love to talk investing. If I'm travel I often plan a little time to look at real estate wherever I go, or I go look at real estate and plan hiking on the side.
