les Fontanelles: the Seagull

Tent - Entire home/apt · Les Fontanelles, Saint-Mesmin, Aquitaine 24270, France

The Space

Les Fontanelles is situated on the borders of the Auvézère River in the Périgord Vert, a quiet and lovely part of the Dordogne.
Our small organic farm produces vegetables and eggs. And we are busy planting fruit- and walnut trees. The walnuts from the old trees are made into an excellent walnut-oil.

In the major sleeping-compartment there is a real matress of 1.40 m on a good bedbase, with two pillows.
All you have to do is roll out your sleepingbag and you are settled in. And on the day of your departure, you just pack your personal stuff and we'll take care of the rest.
At your arrival, our spacious 'Seagull' tent awaits you, fully equipped with everything you need: camping furniture and a camp-kitchen. The way we look at it: everything you need is there, while it still stays camping. The equipment dos not include electricity, but there is a hurricane lantern and a cool box. However, you can opt for electricity, a little fridge and/or lights.

The Seagull is equipped for 6 persons, we will put two sleeping mats in either of the side-compartments. But we strongly advise you go as far as 4 persons for sleeping in it, and if you need more places, either bring a small tent, or rent a sleeping-tent. This way you can fully enjoy the space this beautiful tent has to offer.
We sell a stock of organic groceries, including, of course, the produce from our farm. From time to time, we have a barbeque, or we sit by the campfire in the evening. We enjoy changing ideas about ecological construction, and if you like to, you are always welcome to help in the vegetable garden or with the chickens.

The "Gorges de l'Auvézère" are literally at your feet. From the farm, you can follow the footpath towards the river. A few feet downstream, there is the Saut Ruban, a small waterfall. In the winter, this part of the Auvézère river is the host of wildwater canoeing games. At some places, the river is calm enough to have a swim and there are even a few small sandy beaches.
There are many places to visit: Périgueux, Lascaux, various castles..etc

  • Les Fontanelles is our favorite experience so far w/ AirBnB. The place is beautiful, a great value, and Dimphi and Viger are simply wonderful people. We would love to return there some day, might plan a whole trip around it.

  • We really needed a break after 5 weeks travelling (2 adults, 2 boys 6 & 3). On arrival at les Fontanelles, we immediately exhaled! Beautiful setting, sweet caravan home with thoughtful details, lots of space for running, chickens to feed, goats to look at, and a pool! We enjoyed our interactions with Dimphi and Wieger and other guests and left restored in spirit and body. Highly recommended.

  • If you want to be close to nature and 'get away from it' then this is the place for you. We had a fantastic time. The gite was unique and charming. Wieger and Dimphi are very friendly and made us very welcome. It was great to be able to find out about living an eco lifestyle. We really enjoyed walks with the cats, eating out on the veranda, enjoying the spring sun and the delicious freshly laid eggs! It is a truely lovely spot with a view down the valley and wooded gorge. Tommy (the big ginger cat) came to check on us everyday. We hope to return this summer. Thank you, Matt and Beverley

In 1999 we, Wieger Frenken and Dimphi Hombergen, came to live in France with our two daughters Jip and Luka (at the time 6 and 3 years old), at the old farm 'la Jaurie' in the Haute Vienne. For 10 years, we ran a small campsite and a little business in ecological construction, until in 2010 we thought it was time for a change. We wanted to stay free, so we created a habitat of wooden caravans, the house we can take anywhere with us. In spring of 2011, we found les Fontanelles. It corresponds exactly to what we had in mind for our future: producing organic food, living as much self-sufficient as we can, and sharing this with those who come for a stay. Today, our home has been transported, the organic farm is on it’s way, and last summer (2012), we were happy to welcome our first guests.
