About This Listing
A beautiful, quiet guest house nestled in the hills overlooking downtown LA surrounded by trees and birds.
Nestled in the hills of Mt. Washington overlooking Downtown LA and Elysian Park, this quaint back house studio is surrounded by a serene garden full of butterflies, hummingbirds and the occasional flock of wild parrots. The home is walking distance to cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, buses, the LA River and the Gold metro rail line that runs North to Highland Park and Pasadena and South to Downtown LA and East LA (with connections across the city). The property is in the middle of a quiet, safe hill full of great old houses and incredible views to Downtown and the San Bernardino Mountain range. There are many great parks and places to hike, run and explore within walking distance. Highland Park is an eclectic neighborhood not too far away with lots of great restaurants, cafes, and shops. Atwater Village is also a short distance and offers some great restaurants, cafes and an excellent Farmer's Market on Sundays. Eagle Rock is another great neighborhood not too far away.
The home is styled with an eclectic mix of mid century furnishings and textiles with some modern amenities including a brand new kitchenette with an electric stovetop, tiled bathroom and laminate wood floors. This is a great place to unwind and relax. There is a TV with roku (good for netflix and streaming) and plenty of great indoor and outdoor areas to read and work including a picnic area, firepit and lounge at the top of the terraced back yard with views to Downtown skyscrapers, Elysian Park, the Griffith Park Observatory and the Hollywood Sign on a clear day.
Back house, garden, fire pit, picnic table, hammock.
Interaction with Guests
I like to allow space for my guests to have privacy but am in the front house most mornings and evenings and during the weekend.
Mt. Washington is one of LA's best kept secrets. It's minutes from downtown, surrounded by Highland Park, Atwater Village, Glassell Park and Eagle Rock and filled with great little gems. The Self-Realization Fellowship has their HQ on the top with gorgeous gardens open to the public and there's some fun little parks and stair wells hidden throughout. Great restaurants, bars, cafes and shops close by including a pocket of shops, a local bar, taqueria and grocery store a few blocks away at Figueroa and 26th.
The Metro Gold line is a 10 minute walk from the house which gets you into downtown and connects to the other lines or out to Pasadena. The bus system is also extensive and within a few blocks.
Other Things to Note
This is a great spot for someone who wants to be near the city but feel a bit removed. There's lots of birds, trees and quiet. It's not in the middle of everything but with a car or a willingness to take public transit it's ideal.
This is a smoke free home that has been tastefully decorated with new and collectible furniture and appliances. Please take good care of the space and if anything is broken or breaking, let the hosts know. Parking is available on the street outside except from 8 -10am on Thursdays during street sweeping. Additional parking can be found on side streets nearby during that time. The house is in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by other homes, out of respect for the neighbors and your hosts, please keep the noise level to a minimum between 10pm and 8am.
Ethan's casita was our home away from home for four weeks! We loved staying here. Located near downtown LA it was a quiet retreat. Just as Ethan said, we experienced loveliness and peace in his back yard garden which is filled with birdsong and a partial view of the skyline. The casita has an excellent king size bed and tasteful furnishings. Every day we enjoyed being there. Perfect for a single person or a couple! We hope to be able to stay here again! If you have trouble climbing stairs it might not be for you. Ethan was just a gem to us!
This little casita has a great vibe. The pictures are accurate and complete. Ethan is very responsive, though he was gone while we were there.
Note that the street parking can be hit or miss. No spots are guaranteed, and at night the entire street can be full. Also there is no closet, but there is a dresser and a spot on the wall to hang a few things.
The location is convenient to downtown LA and a great value. We would definitely stay here again!
This home was exactly as described. The guest house was fully equipped so my stay was comfortable. It's a short walk to the Gold Line through a pleasant neighborhood, so you don't need a car. Ethan & I never met due to our work schedules however he promptly answered my questions.
We had a great time during our stay and this thoughtfully arranged private guest house made the perfect home base for our adventures. Convenient arrival and departure logistics and clear instructions -- including a very useful guide to highlights in the surrounding area that we're keeping for future reference!
The back garden area was a lovely spot for quiet reading or to chill and unwind after a long day traversing LA-LA-Land. And Ethan was a gracious host (thanks for the wine!! :)) who manages to create a very "cared for" experience without being in your hair. Highly recommend!
Ethan was a fantastic host that made sure we had everything we needed. His place is so nice, and comfortable, and adorably decorated. I absolutely loved getting to know the neighborhood and walking to Antigua Coffee each day for delicious coffee and breakfast sandwiches. I found Antigua thanks to the helpful information Ethan left about the neighborhood and things to do. I also really loved the outdoor space, and treated this as my office, since I work from home much of the time. I even got WiFi out back there. There was also amazing views of downtown Los Angeles and Elysian Park from there, and very pretty sunsets. I enjoyed my time in the hammock, too. :-)
It was a nice welcome. Ethan was helpful, thoughtful and attentive. I mentioned the absence of a coffee maker in the space. He brought one in the next day.
Though the location is good, it's in Cypress Park, not Mt Washington as described.
Overall it was reasonably comfy and a nice stay.
About the Host, Ethan
What's up guys, I'm Ethan. I'm originally from Brookline, Massachusetts, just outside Boston and have been fortunate to have traveled and lived in many parts of the world. Before LA I lived in Sydney, Australia. I've also lived in Philadelphia and Barcelona, Spain. I love music, design, architecture and creative projects. These days I work quite a bit as a founder of a custom fashion startup company called Apliiq, we collect hundreds of unique and classic fabrics and provide them as an interactive palate for customizing everyday garments and accessories. When I'm not working I enjoy riding my bike, cooking, exploring new neighborhoods, hiking, surfing and going on local day trips and excursions.
I'm always looking for opportunities to improvise and forget time and schedules for a little while. I also enjoy getting really into making things and turning my ideas into realities.
