About this listing
Our farmstay is located less than a 10 minute drive from historic Oamaru, making it a convenient rural destination. For a memorable experience why not spend a night or two immersed in the culture of a small working farm and get to know the locals.
Our spacious Oamaru stone family home is situated amongst trees and gardens. We farm a total of 200 acres, mainly beef cattle & sheep. In Kiwi terms our farm is considered to be on the small side, however a stay with us will give you an insight into the farming lifestyle.
From August to early October we rear calves and orphaned lambs - there is an opportunity to help with this is you stay during those months. We have pet sheep which can be hand fed and patted, as well as 3 friendly farm dogs, Muffin the house cat, Greta the naughty goat, chickens and ducks. Sometimes we also have pigs.
In spring and summer we usually have an extensive vegetable garden growing which you are welcome to explore.
Both Room One and Room Two have king size beds. These beds can convert into single beds if necessary (giving 4 single beds in total). Electric blankets are on all beds. Linen, towels & locally produced artisan soap provided.
A single trundle bed is available if your travelling party has a 5th person, this would be set up in Bedroom One. If there are 6 adults in your travel group you would have use of a third room with a queen size bed.
Large bathroom with separate toilet. Heated towel rail, shower, bathtub and hairdryer available for use.
* Continental Breakfast the next morning - assorted cereals, yoghurt, toast, jams (usually homemade), freshly baked scones or similar, seasonal fruit, juice, tea/coffee/milo.

Interaction with Guests
Working from home gives me the freedom to be around however some times life gets really busy and time is precious. We do however really enjoy meeting folks from all parts of the world and have in the past had some interesting and entertaining conversations which are the rewarding part of hosting guests.
We love the uniqueness of Oamaru, and it is home to wonderful Victorian buildings made from Oamaru stone including the Opera House, Museum and a collection of historic buildings in Harbour Street. They even hold a Victorian Heritage Celebration in November. There's a fabulous Farmers Market held in the Victorian Precinct every Sunday, where you can purchase local produce, visit arts & crafts shops, see local shopkeepers dressed in Victorian style clothes.
If you enjoy bird watching then just down the road from (website hidden) you will find Devils Bridge Wetlands. And on the subject of birds - Oamaru is home to Blue Penguins and Yellow Eyed Penguins - its a bit of a bird lovers paradise really!
What else can you find around Oamaru? There are coastal walks and mountain bike riding - the Alps2Ocean Bike Trail passes by Oamaru. Steampunk has set up headquarters here so make sure you check out their displays. The local Oamaru Gardens are a sight to behold, especially in springtime. And did I mention there are some amazing cafes & bakerys around town? Just out of town is Riverstone, an award winning restaurant with amazing vegetable gardens and gift shop. Oamaru is the perfect base for daytrips to Elephants Rocks & Vanishing World, Moeraki Boulders, the lakes, Kurow and its winerys.
No public transport goes past the farm. More suitable for self-drive travellers or keen cyclists.
For a fee we can provide pick up & drop off for small travel groups (2 to 3 people).
The most important rule is "Enjoy your stay with us!"

We had an enjoyable one night's stay at Jennie's. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the whole apartment was lovely. There was also a shower along with a huge tub. Jennie was extremely friendly and has a warm personality; we enjoyed the chats we had with her. She was knowledgeable and helpful, giving us tips on penguins viewing, food places, and sharing her farming experience. Breakfast was lovely with a large variety of items. We also got to tour around the working farm and feed her cute pet goat Greta, and the sheep. Highly recommend this farmstay, which is located just 5 mins' drive from the town centre.
My stay at the Gumtree Farmstay was more than I could have imagined! Jennie and her family made me feel comfortable and at home. About the Host, Jennie
Our family is a blend of Kiwi and Aussie. We recently jumped the ditch and returned to New Zealand - my husband had a yearning to be on the land again.
Both my husband and I enjoy the rural lifestyle and hope our 3 school age children will benefit from more of a grass roots upbringing. We are loving our farm life with it's menagerie of crazy animals and enjoy sharing this experience with others.
We both backpacked overseas when younger and also spent a year travelling around Australia in a caravan. We're a fairly easy going family and have been thoroughly enjoying hosting people from all parts of the world.
