The Space

After an adventurous day in the hustle and bustle of Cairo, retreat to the quiet and beauty of your houseboat on the River Nile. Located a few minutes from the center of the city, you will find it hard to believe that such tranquility can be found amidst the chaos of this wonderful city. Enjoy the fresh breeze on your private balcony with a spectacular panoramic view of the Nile and the city, or just take in the view from the large windows and glass door from within.

While as a houseboat the overall feeling is rustic and bohemian with wooden floors and cozy ambiance, the furnishings can be described as basic Scandinavian with a touch of Egypt. Amenities include air conditioners/ceiling fans, washing machine, wireless internet, satellite TV, balconies, equipped kitchen, a lovely garden with bench (on the connecting land), and the use of a wooden rowboat. Breakfast is included.

Your hosts, Dan (from the USA) and Mia (from Sweden), will share their decades of experience living in Cairo and traveling throughout Egypt and the region to assist you in any way we can to make your stay a most memorable one. To begin with, for example, we have access to a wonderful Egyptian driver who speaks good English, and will be happy to service your needs from airport pick-up and drop-off to trips.

This room is in a 3-bedroom apartment and affords a view of the garden, has a large ceiling fan and a large built-in closet.

If all 3 bedrooms are available, you are welcome to rent the entire apartment for ultimate privacy, and we offer this apartment in its entirety at a special price - just ask!

We look forward to welcoming you. Dan and Mia

  • Oh, this is what i came from Arabia to experience, the river and sitting there by the river of Nile, the life giver for Egypt! Dan says I can not leave this river, and it is the reason I have been living here in Egypt all that many years of my life.

  • Meine Erwartungen wurden bei weitem übertroffen. Das Hausboot ist ein sehr spezieller und einmaliger Ort, und Dan eine starke Persönlichkeit, die man mehr und mehr schätzen lernt. Sehr empfehlenswert.

  • My stay on the houseboat was exactly what I wanted. It felt like my home away from home. Dan was the perfect host always considerate to provide tips and travel help and just to check in at the end of the day to see if everything was going well. He took the time to help me get oriented and feel comfortable with surroundings/neighborhood. He was quick to address any concerns I had. And he arranged a tour to the pyramids with his driver, Muwafak, the kindest and friendliest man alive. The location was good as all the taxi drivers know where Kit Kat midan is and I felt secure. A great stay to compliment a wonderful trip!

  • Staying with Dan and Mia for four nights in their houseboat on the Nile was a real pleasure. You get cordial hosts, a great location, breakfast essentials in the fridge, and Dan's very capable driver, if you want to hire him for your expeditions.

    I recommend it highly.

  • Dan was a great host, very informative and helpful. Location could not be better, just sitting on the deck overlooking the Nile. I would stay there again when I return to Cairo. In the center of the city and yet away from some of the noise and hustle.

  • Dan was extremely helpful and communicative in helping us not only with our hotel but with our antire Cairo experience, including helping book cabs and guides. The rooms were cozy, the view was lovely, and everything went smoothly. Thanks, Dan!

  • I stayed here for two weeks and loved the houseboat! As a solo female traveler, I felt comfortable and safe here. It's a great location and easy to catch a taxi right outside the front gate. You can also walk to Zamalek in about 10 minutes and have a wealth of great local food options in Midan Kitkat. I stayed in the garden room: comfortable bed, simple but nice decor, and it was nice to sit at the desk enjoying the Nile breeze from the window while I worked. Bathroom was in good working order, hot water plentiful, and the wifi worked very well about 75% of the time (as is typical elsewhere in Cairo). It was also nice to have a kitchen well-stocked with cooking utensils and dishes. Dan is a great host and offered excellent advice and tips. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Dan and Mia are great. The houseboat is great. . I travel to Cairo quarterly for work and was 'reviewing' the place to see if I wanted to stay there more frequently. It will definitely be my first choice, if available, on subsequent trips.

P.S.. The only slight caveat was the shower, which was warm but without great water pressure (houseboat living!) . That said, this was a minor detail.

  • We loved our time on the houseboat with Dan and really made our time in Cairo. They were warm, generous and fun hosts and we would recommend their houseboat to anyone. It is very well positioned - beautiful looking out over the Nile and walking distance to all the shops and cafes of Zamalek and yet surprisingly quiet. Thoroughly recommend this place!

Hi, I'm Dan. Born in New York City, I've spent most of my adult life living and working in the Middle East, have visited over 40 countries (and lived long-term in 7 countries), and obviously love to travel, play tennis, music, and generally just spread good vibes wherever I am. I have lived on this houseboat in Cairo for 12 years, and can't imagine a more wonderful place to live. I love sharing my passions with others. Mia has also lived on this houseboat for 12 years, is a renowned Swedish photographer and journalist, authoring several photo-books on Cairo and the region, and thus she has many interesting contacts throughout Egypt and the region. Her other passions include art and gardening. We live just below the apartments we are posting on airbnb, and look forward to sharing our love of the region and our knowledge with you.
