About this listing
After an adventurous day in the hustle and bustle of Cairo, retreat to the quiet and beauty of your houseboat on the River Nile. Located a few minutes from the center of the city, you will find it hard to believe that such tranquility can be found amidst the chaos of this wonderful city. Enjoy the fresh breeze on your private balcony with a spectacular panoramic view of the Nile and the city, or just take in the view from the large windows and glass door from within.
While as a houseboat the overall feeling is rustic and bohemian with wooden floors and cozy ambiance, the furnishings can be described as basic Scandinavian with a touch of Egypt. Amenities include air conditioners/ceiling fans, washing machine, wireless internet, satellite TV, balconies, equipped kitchen, and a lovely garden with bench (on the connecting land). Breakfast is included.
Your hosts, Dan (from the USA) and Mia (from Sweden), will share their decades of experience living in Cairo and traveling throughout Egypt and the region to assist you in any way we can to make your stay a most memorable one. To begin with, for example, we have access to wonderful Egyptian drivers who speak good English to take you to and from the airport; and our private tour guides are the best!
This room is in a 3-bedroom apartment and affords a full view of the NIle through your own bay window covering the entire Nile-side wall.
If all 3 bedrooms are available, you are welcome to rent the entire apartment for ultimate privacy, and we offer this apartment in its entirety at a special price - just ask!
We look forward to welcoming you. Dan and Mia
Quiet and no outside guests.
Dress respectful of Moslem culture.
The view is great but ear plugs are essential and if you're a very light sleeper even plugs won't suffice. Dan was a nice enough guy but I won't be going back.
I stayed at the houseboat for about three weeks, and had a great time. I highly recommend it.
Dan was a brilliant host and made me feel very welcome. The houseboat is a wonderful place to stay, and an oasis of tranquility in a manic city. It's not luxurious but has absolutely everything you need to be comfortable and was very clean. The bay window room itself has an incredible view out to the river that never gets boring to wake up to.
As other reviewers have said, the only thing to bear in mind is the fact its quite loud (as is Cairo in general, to be fair) due to a nearby mosque and party faloukas (boats) going past at night . You get used to it though, and with earplugs and a fan / aircon on it's not a disturbance.
The communication I had with Dan was terrific - answers to my queries came same day. I wasn't aware that there were three rooms in the section I stayed in but that was fine as my fellow lodgers were all very nice and we spent time on the deck chatting. Very pleasant.
Dan gave me a run down on how things worked when I arrived even though it was lateish and we also had time to talk on a more personal level. The room (Bay Window Room) faces directly on the Nile and there was some noise from the party boats who all liked to crank up the music but I had no problems with that as I am a sound sleeper.
Taxis were available right outside the door and getting back was no problem as they all knew where "Kit Kat medan" was located. Why anyone would want to stay any where but a houseboat on the Nile is a mystery to me!
Dan from the moment I booked the Nile Houseboat truly went above and beyond to make my booking and stay at his home a welcoming and enjoyable decision. He responding with zest to any request and was more than willing to answer any questions and guide me in the right direction. The Nile Houseboat is a comfortable scenic oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle Cairo just steps away. If your going to stay in Cairo this is the place to stay.
I spent 4 days on Dan's houseboat during a recent work trip to Cairo and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Communication with Dan was easy and straightforward and check in flexible. The houseboat is very easy to find, a 15 min walk from Zamalek and next to a lively area with great fruit and food stalls. Waking up and having breakfast on your own terrace overlooking the Nile is priceless - but do remember that you are still in the middle of Cairo, so some traffic noise and the calls to prayer are inevitable. Besides the boat, location and lovely host I especially enjoyed swapping travel stories with guests in the other rooms on my first evening. I'll definitely be back - with more time to explore the city!
Dan's houseboat feels very homey and is well located just a short walk or a cab ride from Zamalek. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Cairo who is looking for an affordable place to stay with lots of character.
Dan & Mia were great hosts. The houseboat is a great way to go and I would certainly recommend it. It's conveniently located and a relaxing place to spend some down time. In addition to providing lodging, Dan was very helpful with places to go and hooking us up with trustworthy tour guides and drivers. Highly recommended!

About the Host, Dan
Hi, I'm Dan. Born in New York City, I've spent most of my adult life living and working in the Middle East, have visited over 40 countries (and lived long-term in 7 countries), and obviously love to travel, play tennis, music, and generally just spread good vibes wherever I am. I have lived on this houseboat in Cairo for 12 years, and can't imagine a more wonderful place to live. I love sharing my passions with others.
Mia has also lived on this houseboat for 12 years, is a renowned Swedish photographer and journalist, authoring several photo-books on Cairo and the region, and thus she has many interesting contacts throughout Egypt and the region. Her other passions include art and gardening.
We live just below the apartments we are posting on airbnb, and look forward to sharing our love of the region and our knowledge with you.
