Nile Houseboat B&B - Bay Window Rm.

Bed & Breakfast - Private room · Nile Corniche, Tag Ad Dewal, Giza, Egypt

The Space

After an adventurous day in the hustle and bustle of Cairo, retreat to the quiet and beauty of your houseboat on the River Nile. Located a few minutes from the center of the city, you will find it hard to believe that such tranquility can be found amidst the chaos of this wonderful city. Enjoy the fresh breeze on your private balcony with a spectacular panoramic view of the Nile and the city, or just take in the view from the large windows and glass door from within.

While as a houseboat the overall feeling is rustic and bohemian with wooden floors and cozy ambiance, the furnishings can be described as basic Scandinavian with a touch of Egypt. Amenities include air conditioners/ceiling fans, washing machine, wireless internet, satellite TV, balconies, equipped kitchen, a lovely garden with bench (on the connecting land), and the use of a wooden rowboat. Breakfast is included.

Your hosts, Dan (from the USA) and Mia (from Sweden), will share their decades of experience living in Cairo and traveling throughout Egypt and the region to assist you in any way we can to make your stay a most memorable one. To begin with, for example, we have access to a wonderful Egyptian driver who speaks good English, and will be happy to service your needs from airport pick-up and drop-off to trips.

This room is in a 3-bedroom apartment and affords a full view of the NIle through your own bay window covering the entire Nile-side wall.

If all 3 bedrooms are available, you are welcome to rent the entire apartment for ultimate privacy, and we offer this apartment in its entirety at a special price - just ask!

We look forward to welcoming you. Dan and Mia

  • The house boat is exactly as described, very clean and a perfect location to experience Cairo. Dan was extremely helpful and happy to give me advice and make me feel at home. You can tell he is very experienced with hosting guest in Cairo, he tells you things you didn't even think you should know. Also, the tour guide he arranged for me was the best tour guide I had out of 4 in all of my travels in Egypt. I would absolutely recommend Dan and his house boat.

  • What an adventure!!! I appreciate so much Dan offering his houseboat for rent. There is no other way to experience Egypt! You are truly in the HEART OF CAIRO, you cannot get a more authentic Egyptian experience. Dan is full of advise and eager to share his survival tips from how to cross the street to the best eats in the area. The apartment is simple and rustic, providing you with everything you need. Dan filled my fridge with breakfast items and ensured I had everything I needed to be comfortable. His driver became a good friend, as well as personal tour guide of the pyramids and the city of Cairo. I would definitely return!

  • My stay in Cairo was a surprise visit as my company sent me there last minute. I had no idea of the place apart from that there was a cool museum downtown and some pyramides in the area.

Well...then I booked with Dan and that totally sorted out my trip...
    - airport pick up.
    - very friendly, communicative & informed host.
    - loveley location right on the river away from the city's bustle.
    - 10 minutes away from downtown / 1-2$ by cab.
    - inexpensive tasty local food & local market right across the road.
    - friendly english speaking driver & guide for a day at the pyramids.
    - lots of information where to go & how to shop, travel and sightsee on & off the beaten path.
    - there was advice for everything and it always worked out and exceeded my expectations.

My 5 days on the boat house were totally awesome and there is no other place I would stay in Cairo.
Thanks Dan...for the 5 Star experience!!!

  • Just thinking of the lovely houseboat on the Nile and Dan makes me smiling too. Since my first time in Egypt in 1989 I felt in love with the city for many reasons. And as a lover of Naguib Mahfouz's novel "Adrift on the Nile" I always wanted to spend some days on a boat.
Close to the city Centre it is an oasis in bustling Cairo and the best place to start discovering the city's countless treasures.
Dan is the perfect landlord, beeing around for any questions and helps and staying apart to give you the freedom and feeling that it is your own houseboat.
Sitting on the houseboat terrace by night, gazing at the bypassing river and the illuminated little party boats, having a little chat with nice roommates whilst enjoying a glass of white wine will make your stay unforgettable.

    I will come back ASAP

  • What a unique setting! Dan was an excellent host and gave us great tips to explore Cairo off the beaten path. Would highly recommend and stay again next time I am in Cairo.

  • I had a great time in Cairo and living on the houseboat was just right for me. I especially enjoyed the independence it gives you...you do not have to stick to any time table as you would if you stayed in a hotel. Dan is a great host who is always there for you if you have questions or if you need advise or ideas to explore the area. As I was travelling on my own Dan looked well after me and made sure I was safe. Especially if I was on and about or away for longer.

The boat rocks slightly whenever a bigger boat passes and I find this is a very comforting feeling that helps to relax but also makes you aware that everything is real and you are part of the outsides world. You can easily walk to local shops if you fancy a coffee whilst sitting in the sunshine or if you would like to get a snack. Taxis are inexpensive for travellers..so getting around is no problem. There is a mosque behind the houseboat and opposite on the other side of the river from which you can hear the prayers which I loved to listen to. Go for it! You will not regret. Simply stick to a few rules and you are safe in Cairo...as safe as in any other city!

  • This place is great. We intended to stay at Hotel Longchamps but it was full, so we took a chance on the houseboat and loved it. Booked 2 rooms - the $50 double room and the $40 garden room (the bay window room was taken). We spent our time on the shared balcony staring out at the Nile. It was lovely, an oasis in busy Cairo. There's a rowing club across the river so it's fun to watch the boats. It's a quick walk across the bridge to Zamalek and a cheap taxi (less than a dollar) home. Dan, the owner, is a great source of Cairo info. He arranged for airport pickup (recommended). He also knows a tour guide but we had previously booked with Haisam Salama who is great. Stay here.

  • The houseboat was in a great location in Cairo and our host Dan was full of good insider tips for places to eat and visit. We had several memorable meals thanks to his recommendations. Dan also provided details and arranged for his driver to collect up from Cairo airport which saved us the haggling on arrival !

  • I booked this for my employee, Colin. Here's his report:

This accommodation is fantastic! With outstanding views on the Nile waterfront, Dan's houseboat is an oasis of calm amid the noisy traffic and frantic pace of Cairo. The nighttime party and dinner cruises that pass by are the sole disturbance, though I found them a bit entertaining to watch. :o) Perfectly situated walking distance from the eclectic Zamalek neighbourhood, Dan's place is a natural jumping off point to access all the necessities on foot. Breakfast was a bonus! Very thoughtful of Dan to include enough food that I could make a nice meal at the start of each day I stayed.

About
Hi, I'm Dan. Born in New York City, I've spent most of my adult life living and working in the Middle East, have visited over 40 countries (and lived long-term in 7 countries), and obviously love to travel, play tennis, music, and generally just spread good vibes wherever I am. I have lived on this houseboat in Cairo for 12 years, and can't imagine a more wonderful place to live. I love sharing my passions with others. Mia has also lived on this houseboat for 12 years, is a renowned Swedish photographer and journalist, authoring several photo-books on Cairo and the region, and thus she has many interesting contacts throughout Egypt and the region. Her other passions include art and gardening. We live just below the apartments we are posting on airbnb, and look forward to sharing our love of the region and our knowledge with you.
