19th canalhouse old Utrecht, garden

House - Private room · Plompetorengracht, Utrecht, Utrecht 3512 CB, Netherlands

The Space

This beautifull monumental house build in 1863 with much older details ( a so called 'herenhuis" and rijksmonument) in the medieval citycenter of Utrecht is perfect as an Utrecht and surroundings (a.o.Amsterdam, Rotterdam,Arnhem, Den Haag) get away. The house and garden are an oasis in the heart of the city. Your room will be a private room/studio in the ample atttic, with it's own bathroom with shower and a small walk in closet that surves as a childroom as well (up to 3 yrs) The room is suitable to stay for one or a few nights up to a few months for 2 adults and a small child. There is one doublebed. And there is a "ledikant"or a small childsbed in a little room next to your bedroom. When you like two separate beds you can rent two bedrooms as well. The house is big (320 m2) and you can use the downstairs livingroom and play the piano or sit and play a boardgame in the diningroom/library, or enjoy the trees and birds in the lush garden. There is also a kitchen from the owners downstairs where you can prepare a meal or enjoy a meal with us.
The studio in the attic is ample, cosy and nicely decorated with a wooden floor and silk curtains, and very quiet and peacefull at the gardenside of the house. We live in the house too, but not on that floor. There is a stair to the attic that is closed off with a door, so the attic floor on which this room lies is very secluded from the rest of the house.
The room has a couch, books in dutch and english, a closet for your clothes. It has a small sitting area, a walk in closet, and a small bathroom with shower and toilet with soft towels. All in your own appartment. You can make tea or have a Nespresso in your room if you like. Just ask for the necessary equipment. Clean sheets, towels, soap, shampoo, blowdryer are all standard provided.

You may use the ownerskitchen if you like. And when i am there I will serve you a whole breakfast in the 19th century atmosphere of the diningrooom at your preferred time if you like.

The house is perfectly located at a canal in the old innercity of Utrecht. The restaurants, the Werf, filmhouses, dancings, the Dick Bruna museum , Catherijne Convent, or the Rietveld house is at walking distance. Utrecht is really very nice with lots of dance, music and art, festivals, restaurants, terraces, historical interesting sites, beautifull architecture, old churches ecc. Lonely Planet listed Utrecht a few yrs. ago as one of the must sees in the Netherlands. And all those things are withing walking distance of our house.

The house is one hour away -door to door with public transport- from the Anne Frankhouse and the museums in Amsterdam. And one hour from the Stadhuis and the Markt in Gouda and one hour from Weena Rotterdam and Spui in The Hague. To the other side we are also one hour from Arnhem and Den Bosch. We are one and a half hour from the German border and if you want to go to Antwerpen in Belgium this also you can easily do for one day by train or car. In 90 minutes you can be at the beach in Noordwijk, Zandvoort or Scheveningen.

If you come by car you can park your car for free at the edge of the city and come by bus for 4,50 euro for 2 persons, or park it in front of the house for around 2,50 euro an hour (7 am till 1 am) with a code we will give you. A card for the whole day (untill 1 am) will be around 30 euro.

The street is one of the oldest in Utrecht, form 14th century and the house has still original details of 16th and 17th century. It was built in 1862 from two other houses. The cellar dates from before that time. There is a cinema in the end of the street, 3 min. walk, with opposite a wonderfull very old (18th century) bakery and numerous shops and restaurants all in walking distance. There are buses to the CS at 4 min. walk around the corner. If you come by train we offer you pickup and drop service.

The house and garden itself is an oasis in the heart of medieval Utrecht, very quiet with a lot of birds who make their nests every may. young blackbirds come to eat from our catfood in the kitchen, their parents show them where to go :) the garden is lovely and very lush, it has many places to sit and sip your cappuccino or herbal tea. You wouldn't tell you are in a citycenter. The atmosphere in the garden and attic is of a country house. We are happy to call this our home and we are even more happy when we can share it with you!

  • Fabulous location, close to the centre of the city, shops and great places to eat. The room was very comfortable and cosy. Marishka and Seb were so welcoming. Staying with them felt like a home away from home.

i have lived for 18 yrs with my husband and daughter in this beautifull house together with lots of cats of which three are still with us, the oldest cat Timmie is 20 and he entertained lots of guests, small or big. I am on airbnb now for one and a half year and we had many wonderfull guests but the house is sold and we move to Veere near the sea this May where i will continue to keep an airbnb in a much smaller location but beautifully located in the medieval town of Veere at the Veerse meer. I say thanks to all my guests in Utrecht and i hope to welcome you back in Veere sometime! About me: i love to cook, travel, organic food, garden, birds, nature, making the house warm and comfortable and in general giving the guests the best stay possible.
