After an adventurous day in the hustle and bustle of Cairo, retreat to the quiet and beauty of your houseboat on the River Nile. Located a few minutes from the center of the city, you will find it hard to believe that such tranquility can be found amidst the chaos of this wonderful city. Enjoy the fresh breeze on your private balcony with a spectacular panoramic view of the Nile and the city, or just take in the view from the large windows and glass door from within.
While as a houseboat the overall feeling is rustic and bohemian with wooden floors and cozy ambiance, the furnishings can be described as basic Scandinavian with a touch of Egypt. Amenities include air conditioners/ceiling fans, washing machine, wireless internet, satellite TV, balconies, equipped kitchen, and a lovely garden with bench (on the connecting land). Breakfast is included.
Your hosts, Dan (from the USA) and Mia (from Sweden), will share their decades of experience living in Cairo and traveling throughout Egypt and the region to assist you in any way we can to make your stay a most memorable one. To begin with, for example, we have access to wonderful Egyptian drivers who speaks good English to take you to and from the airport; and our private tour guides are the best!
This room is in a 3-bedroom apartment and has its own private small balcony, and the bed is large and can accommodate a couple.
If all 3 bedrooms are available, you are welcome to rent the entire apartment for ultimate privacy, and we offer this apartment in its entirety at a special price - just ask!
We look forward to welcoming you. Dan and Mia
Quiet and no large parties.
Appropriate dress for Muslim cultural sensitivity.
Only registered guests are allowed on the houseboat. (No outside guests.)
We were happy to stay at Dan and Mia's. Everything worked out well and the boat was easy to find!
Had the best time on Dan's house boat! Very cozy and relaxing waking up on the Nile. I loved getting up in the morning and enjoying tea on the balcony. Great location and Dan was super helpful. Teaching me how to properly cross the street and hail a cab. Dan has lived a very interesting life and I could sit and talk to him for hours! I definetly recommend and will surely be visiting again soon!
Our stay at Dan's houseboat was lovely. The decor was charming and the accomodations pleasing. We relaxed in the living room, played card games on the balcony, slept well in our cozy room, and made breakfast in the kitchen every morning. There are a few mosques nearby, so expect an early wakeup with prayer call - but if you're like us, it's part of the joy of the experience. Highly recommended.
Dan was an incredibly welcoming and helpful host. He went out of his way to make sure everything was ready for us when we arrived and gave us lots of great suggestions for things to eat and do in the area.
The houseboat itself is glorious, a little noisy at night but nothing you can't sleep through. The views are wonderful, you really can't beat waking up on the Nile and having breakfast on a balcony by the water! Absolutely loved chilling out in the living room and meeting other guests.
Location wise it was also great. 10-15 minutes walk into Zamelek, easy to get cabs from right outside, and easy to find again in a cab on the way back!
Would definitely come back here again when I'm back in Cairo.
Dan was an excellent host and we highly recommend staying on his houseboat when visiting Cairo. It is a unique experience right on the Nile and very close to key areas like downtown Cairo and Zamalek. Dan has been in Cairo for a long time so he is a wealth of information for the good places to visit and full of good tips for navigating the chaos of the City. We would definitely stay with him again.
Over all, Dan was great and the houseboat was the best place we stayed in Egypt. My girlfriend and I arrived late at night (11pm) on Christmas Eve and Dan was ready for our arrival. He quickly showed us the place and our room.
The houseboat has two levels, guest - like us - stay on the 2nd level. Houseboat has three bedrooms. We stayed in the middle room, which has a large window overlooking the Nile. Place was quiet, which is good because Cairo is a busy city and very noisy.
Because we were the only ones there at the time, the place felt like it was our home away from home. We would walk across the street and buy groceries from the local street shops/vendors.
Wireless Internet was awesome. There's a TV w/ cable, but we did not watch that much TV. Bathroom was clean. Shower is a bit small but it worked for us. Easy access to the Egyptian Museum - 5 minutes taxi ride, which is about 10 Egyptian Pounds or around $1.25 US dollars. Always carry small bills to pay taxi drivers - it just makes things easier.
Dan was very helpful and can tell you where to eat authentic Egyptian food. We never made it to Sequoia, in Zamalek, but Dan seems to really like that place. We did go to Falfela, I think that's how is spelled, and food was good and relatively affordable.
Our favorite part of the whole boathouse experience was cooking breakfast and then sitting on the balcony, overlooking the Nile, to enjoy our food. That simply made our stay memorable.

Hi, I'm Dan. Born in New York City, I've spent most of my adult life living and working in the Middle East, have visited over 40 countries (and lived long-term in 7 countries), and obviously love to travel, play tennis, music, and generally just spread good vibes wherever I am. I have lived on this houseboat in Cairo for 12 years, and can't imagine a more wonderful place to live. I love sharing my passions with others.
Mia has also lived on this houseboat for 12 years, is a renowned Swedish photographer and journalist, authoring several photo-books on Cairo and the region, and thus she has many interesting contacts throughout Egypt and the region. Her other passions include art and gardening.
We live just below the apartments we are posting on airbnb, and look forward to sharing our love of the region and our knowledge with you.
