- ITAEWON : The Global Community in Seoul: Global Fashions and Foods
Itaewon is a unique place in Seoul where one can meet people of diverse nationalities and cultures. There is a popular joke saying that international residents may not know Seoul, but they know Itaewon. Seoul even designated Itaewon as its first ‘Special Tourism District,’ to highlight it as a destination for internationals to enjoy a diversity of culture, shopping, and entertainment experiences.
Itaewon is in the middle of Yongsan-gu, which borders the northern part of the Hangang River. It is also close to Seoul Station, Myeong-dong, and Namsan Mountain. The formation of this exotic and global tourism site is closely associated with modern Korean history.
In the aftermath of the Korean War, American soldiers began to stay in the Yongsan Garrison and, consequently, numerous businesses and housing complexes were formed in Yongsan. In preparation for international meetings, the Seoul Asian and Olympic Games, the government strengthened tourism infrastructures and revitalized commerce, prompting international tourists from other parts of the world (such as Japan, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, etc.) to visit Itaewon.
Itaewon typically refers to the street full of stores, restaurants, and stalls over 1.4 kilometers between Itaewon 1-dong and Hannam 2-dong in the east. Fashion shops specialize in various imported clothes, leather goods, fur goods, handbags, shoes, and antique furniture. Big and tall sizes unavailable in other areas are well-stocked, and experienced tailors offer customized clothes.
Another one of Itaewon’s many draws is its diverse food culture, which features cuisine from around world. Restaurants right behind Hamilton Hotel form a type of exhibition hall for international foods from Korea, New York, London, India, Thailand, China, Greece, Pakistan, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, and more. Unique flavors, exotic interiors, and diverse nationalities help to make Itaewon befittingly ‘the global village in Seoul.’

My stay at Maji 's place was wonderful ! Her apartment is perfectly clean, quiet, cosy and spacious ! Maji is so kind that she cooks delicious breakfast for us every morning ! It takes only about 5 mins to walk to itaewon station and bus stop !
Maji is wonderful woman and landlord .. Her place is spotless clean ..so incredible decor insider of place , some of her furniture from her grandmum's grandmum , wonderful way to experience Korean culture . the breakfast she cooked was so delicious .. We enjoyed the stay so much .i am sure who comes will enjoy as mush we do ...
Maji is very accommodating and kind. Her breakfasts are tasty and nutritious (a godsend if you're going to be eating anything in food heaven Itaewon). Those beds are really comfortable. Only downside is a big hill to climb, but there's not much we can do about that! Really easy access to Itaewon's restaurants, shops, and two subway stops. Walking distance to War Memorial as well.
Maji's house is very sweet and comfortable!! I love Maji and her family. Her house near the iteawon station on 6 line is very convenient.
We were visiting our son who lives in Itaewon and chose Maji Ahn's because the double twin room looked much larger than the other guesthouse photos we had seen and the room turned out to be exactly like in the photo , lots of space and just up the hill from the main busy street in a very residential area and very quiet. Good beds, everything immaculately clean and a large bathroom just next to the room. There were two other guests staying at the same time but they used another shower room. Breakfast provided was out of this world, different every day and if we were tired and decided to emerge about 11 a.m. Maji would leave something for us on the breakfast table. Maji is the most delightful host and she helped us all she could if we had any questions.
We found a lovely pottery shop just nearby so I'll pass on the link =>
Great location and a welcoming host, Maji is flexible and is very much family oriented.
Her house however is located on a very steep narrow road.
The only setback is drainage system in the shower, it needs repair as the water level is above the ankle. The same with the washing basin, as water will back-flow and flood the floor.
Other than that, we enjoy our stay here.
Maji is very friendly and she picked us up. She made us amazing delicious breakfast during our stay. We enjoyed it alot because we get to try how home food in korea taste like :) besides she is very helpful too. She gives us directions for restaurants and she keeps the place really clean and tidy. The location of her house is quite good and it is therefor really convenient with all kinds of public transportation. We really had a great time staying at Maji's place.
My friend and I had a lovely experience staying at Maji's house. Everything that is written and all the pictures posted speak the truth.
Itaewon is a great neighborhood with alot of restaurants, bars and shops. The house is near the Namsan Park and Seoul Tower.
If we had to come back to Seoul, we would definitely consider staying at Majis.
Maji has to be one of the nicest and gracious ladies I have met in Korea. She will do anything to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Great salad breakfast every morning.
The bedrooms are clean and comfortable with a touch of style.. and the house is well maintained unlike most places in Itaewon which can be quite run down.
Location is excellent as being only 1 min walk to Itaewon.
My friend and I stayed here in end Dec for 5 nights. The whole house was as cosy, beautiful and well-maintained as seen in the photos. It was warm enough during winter with its ondol. The beds were comfortable with thick quilt covers. There was no TV in the bedroom or the living room, so we missed watching the Korean channels. Although the towels provided were small (not big bath towels), there were plenty of fresh ones for change. WIFI worked very well. The room was spacious with wardrobe space. The bathroom was spacious and just next to our bedroom.
As the house was located up on a slope and we had large suitcases, we called Maji for help when we reached and her husband picked us up from the bottom of the slope and drove us up. Maji helped us to wheel our luggage down when we left. It would be easy with backpacks or small/light luggage. We avoided wearing heels up/down the slope. All taxi drivers dropped us at the foot of the slope, so we took the 2min climb as our daily exercise which was easy when we got used to it.
The residential area is peaceful but safe. The main street is just down the slope and the Itaewon metro station is only 3min walk from the house, so a very convenient location with shops and eateries nearby. McDonald’s, KFC, Holly’s Café are few that operate 24hrs. The streets were busy even at night due to the bars and pubs in the area. There is also a police station nearby. Itaewon is 6 stops to Myeongdong by metro and in a very central location to Gyeongbokgung, Dongdaemun, Insadong, Gangnam, Apgujeong, etc. Airport bus 6030 from Incheon Airport to Itaewon’s stop opposite to Hamilton Hotel is a mere 1hr ride (going back to Incheon Airport takes 1.5hrs). A convenience store is located less than 100m away from the house further up the slope.
Maji was a very welcoming and friendly host who spoke very simple English. Her daughter was well-behaved and shy. As we woke up in late mornings, she ensured our homemade Korean breakfasts were kept warm. Overall, we enjoyed our stay with Maji and her warm hospitality.
