- ITAEWON : The Global Community in Seoul: Global Fashions and Foods
Itaewon is a unique place in Seoul where one can meet people of diverse nationalities and cultures. There is a popular joke saying that international residents may not know Seoul, but they know Itaewon. Seoul even designated Itaewon as its first ‘Special Tourism District,’ to highlight it as a destination for internationals to enjoy a diversity of culture, shopping, and entertainment experiences.
Itaewon is in the middle of Yongsan-gu, which borders the northern part of the Hangang River. It is also close to Seoul Station, Myeong-dong, and Namsan Mountain. The formation of this exotic and global tourism site is closely associated with modern Korean history.
In the aftermath of the Korean War, American soldiers began to stay in the Yongsan Garrison and, consequently, numerous businesses and housing complexes were formed in Yongsan. In preparation for international meetings, the Seoul Asian and Olympic Games, the government strengthened tourism infrastructures and revitalized commerce, prompting international tourists from other parts of the world (such as Japan, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, etc.) to visit Itaewon.
Itaewon typically refers to the street full of stores, restaurants, and stalls over 1.4 kilometers between Itaewon 1-dong and Hannam 2-dong in the east. Fashion shops specialize in various imported clothes, leather goods, fur goods, handbags, shoes, and antique furniture. Big and tall sizes unavailable in other areas are well-stocked, and experienced tailors offer customized clothes.
Another one of Itaewon’s many draws is its diverse food culture, which features cuisine from around world. Restaurants right behind Hamilton Hotel form a type of exhibition hall for international foods from Korea, New York, London, India, Thailand, China, Greece, Pakistan, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, and more. Unique flavors, exotic interiors, and diverse nationalities help to make Itaewon befittingly ‘the global village in Seoul.’

The neighbourhood was great and the accommodation was exactly how Maji had described. Everything was fantastic, and of course the only thing we could gripe about was the steep slope leading up to Maji's house. My recommendation would be to take a cab to Maji's place as it can get quite tiring to push your luggage up the slope.
But because Maji was located some distance away from the main road, I found it quite tranquil and peaceful and sleep came really easy as we did not encounter loud street noise or bright lights. Maji's breakfast is legendary, as you can read from all the other reviews. Shopping was good too around the Itaewon area, and everything was quite convenient. The room was perfect, and Maji is a real good host as she is always keen to help us with our additional requests.
Maji is sweet and her house is lovely. She cares about whether I'm hungry, whether I'm cold which makes me feel at home. The slope leading to her house could be a little exercise, especially for high heels :D. The breakfast was yummy and with different types of Korean homemade food. She sometimes even went out of her way to cook me extra food or invite me to share her granddaughter's cheese cake. I really appreciated everything she had done for me. Thank you, Maji!
Maji is wonderful. She knows how to take care of her guests. Choosing to be accommodated in Maji's appartment was the best decision I made and helped me to fully enjoy the city. I loved the various Korean cooking she prepared every morning for breakfast. When I come back to Seoul, it is definitely the place where I want to be.
Maji is so nice and warm-hearted. Her house is lovely and clean that we feel like home. And breakfast is super yummy! We really enjoyed our stay.
Maji is friendly and helpful. Her house is located in the central of Seoul so its easy for us to get to the places of attraction like Namsan Tower etc. Its also accessible to the subway. The neighbourhood itself has alot of shopping and cafes. For muslim travellers, there's alot of halal restaurant located near the neighbourhood too. I had a pleasant trip in Seoul :)
The room was great--exactly as pictured. The private bathroom was big and really nice! I felt really comfortable staying here. The breakfasts each morning were delicious and interesting.
This place is just up a hill between Itaewon and Noksapeong subway stations, which was super convenient.
I highly recommend this place to others.
Only tiny issues were 1. The dryer isn't working 2. Shower water wasn't as hot as I wanted, but as soon as I mentioned it, that was remedied. So not real problems at all.
Maji was super nice to us and she took care of us very very well!! Her house is really lovely and she cooked different kind of breakfast every morninng and it's super delicious! We have spent a good time staying with her and her family and I will definitely recommend her to all of my friend who would like to travel to Seoul!
