The Coconut Cottage is the largest home we have for two people and it is a two story unit....It has all the items that you will need to have a fantastic time on Kauai. It has a kitchenette big enough that you can even bake a pizza and the 52 in Flat screen smart TV has all the cool cable channels... The bathroom area is detached and totally private included is a easy to use composting toilet and an on demand hot water heater...
The beach is only a 20 min walk away and the views from the Coconut cottage are fantastic.........The Coconut Cottage is probably not for the resort type of person, because it is at a working organic farm which composts all of the organic matters.......lots of farm animals to play with and fresh gardens to gather fresh Veggies for free....
Hope to see you soon at the Coconut Cottage a true Paradise on Earth

My husband and I had a great stay at the Coconut Cottage last week. We stayed with Dave for 4 nights. The cottage was cute and comfortable, and had everything we needed. We especially liked the that the kitchen area included all the appliances we could have needed, plenty of counter space, and a full size fridge. As for the stairs up to the sleeping area, yes they move a little, but they felt perfect safe and sturdy. The composting toilet and outdoor bathroom/shower were fine to use. The design of the bathroom and the rustic nature of the your surroundings means you will come across bugs including roaches, but that's to be expected. One of the roaches even managed to show away in our suitcase and came out to say hi when we got home. We liked the farm, especially the friendly goats and pigs, and the farm fresh eggs. We did go to the private beach nearby, but, perhaps because of the high tide this time of year, it was more boulders than beach. Overall, it was a wonderful place to stay for people who aren't into the sterile, manicured resort-type accommodations, and Dave was super helpful with local tips - he told us exactly where to find wild sea turtles feeding and he was right!
Loved staying in the coconut cottage. Very cozy and comfortable place. Perfectly spacious for two guests. Full kitchen equipment, plus a few borrowed seasoning items from Dave. Great place to stay while exploring Kauai. We spent our days hiking, swimming, and snorkeling, and then enjoyed the coziness of the cottage in the evening. The property is quite close to the main road around the island, so traffic is audible. Also, if you are a light sleeper, roosters may keep you awake. I imagine this would be the case just about anywhere on Kauai though since there are wild roaming chickens everywhere.
Dave was an amazing host, and greeted us and introduced us to his warm place. We felt comfortable and safe as we slept soundly through the beautiful sound of rain on the roof. The following morning, we awoke to a teeming property right below the mountains, full of vegetables and with even some animals!
This is probably the coolest place you could stay on the island. It's a sweet environment, doesn't feel cheesy, and is easy to relax in.
The shower & bathroom is easy (its eco-friendly too) and not weird.
Definitely go during a time when you can spend time on the island and enjoy his adventures, they sound like SO MUCH fun!
PS. Make sure to pay attention to his directions, DO NOT GO by the address that airbnb lists --- as it will end up in you being lost and on the phone with dave for a while.
You gotta stay here! We will go back the next time we are in Kauai!
Coconut Cottage was spotlessly clean when we arrived. We found it comfortable and a good base of operations. We knew about the composting toilet in advance, so that was no big deal. We also knew about the ladder-like climb to the upstairs bedroom, so no surprise there, either. Dave was nursing an injured knee, so he couldn't offer any adventures, but we had plenty of adventures on our own. February isn't a good time of year for fresh stuff from the garden, but we did help ourselves to cilantro and mint--and thanks, Dave, for the great eggs. The kitchen was adequate for most meals, but not for anything fancy.
Dave and the Coconut Cottage were fantastic! We would stay there again in a heartbeat and intend to again in the near future. Dave was an amazing host and made you feel right at home immediately upon arrival. The rustic feeling cottage with all the amenities you could hope for was extremely comfortable and a pleasure to return to each day. It was spacious and detached from the other units on property and felt like a real getaway. I've seen a few comments about bugs on other peoples reviews, and all I can say is, get real! Kauai is home to the wettest spot on earth and a tropical haven for many creatures, so bugs are not even worth a mention other than to encourage other guests not leave doors and windows without screens open and not to leave food out. This is the norm for all of the island of Kauai and is even the case in the most sterile and manicured areas like hotels and developed resort areas. I had previously lived on Kauai for 5 years and hiked, explored , and educated others as a guide; and didn't know about many of the places Dave was able to take us to and educate us about. Having him as your guide is worth the stay alone. What's more, we slept more soundly than we ever had on the tempurpedic mattress, enjoyed fresh eggs in the mornings from the chickens and had fresh fruit as well. BOOK THIS PLACE !
Loved staying at the Coconut Cottage - it is a unique property, loved the decor and layout. I broke a bone in my foot before I got to Daves although I didn't know it was broken at the time - in any case I managed it up and down the stairs that have been referenced in other reviews with ease! I really miss our lazy evenings with awesome microbrewey beers and a film off Netflix. Had to try the pizza oven, which was great. Loved waking up, seeing nature, saying hi to the hens and goats and coming back to such a lush haven. Despite my injury we made it to hike the Sleeping Giant, Pokee State Park, Waimea Canyon, Hanalei Bay, Kapaa Beach walk, Na pali coast and the beaches at Poipu. This property is in a great location - furthest is Pokee but it's not close to much anyway! We are from the UK and we were after a slice of regular Kauai which we definitely got. See you in the future Dave - Ive got to return to do the hikes I couldn't manage!
My husband and I found Dave's lovely coconut cottage on AirBNB and decided to book 2 nights after 10 days with a large group of family. We needed a quiet getaway. Being a bit adventurous the other reviews talking about "composting toilets" and "outdoor showers" totally sold us on this place! Dave was quick to reply and easy to communicate with during the booking process.
The cottage itself was wonderful. The toilet and shower are actually in a side building and were very clean and pleasant. The interior was eclectically decorated and very charming and the bed was SUPER comfortable. The goats and pigs and chickens on the property just added to the overall experience.
Oh, we also got to go on a FREE adventure and swim at the bottom of 2 amazing waterfalls. What a way to experience the true Kauai. Dave was a great guide (though this wasn't a tour - more like friends showing friends around) and we had a blast with him.
We love to travel and have many places on our list to still check out, but returning to Kauai (this time in the Summer and not Winter) is on it! We have heard the island changes so much with each season and we would love to check out it's offerings in the summer months. Of course, we would love to stay with Dave & family again and will recommend his place to anyone we know!
We will be back & can't wait for the kalalau trip!
Mahalo for everything Dave, you were a great host

For those who seek comfortable accommodations and a nice jumping off point for island adventures at a great value, consider the Coconut Cottage. Dave is a very friendly host and accommodated all of our needs! • The Cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable vacation: well-equipped kitchen, big TV with Netflix (binge-watch your favorite shows) and a comfy bed upstairs. The bathroom is private, open-air and user friendly. Taking a shower with a view of the mountains was AMAZING! • Because the Coconut Cottage is a part of the Kauai Adventure Camp, we were lucky and on some (free!) adventure tours with Dave. If you're up for it, you can experience some beautiful places of Kauai from a local's perspective. Some hiking is involved and the reward is big. Put on some bug spray, wear a swimsuit and get ready for some fun! • The Cottage is near the highway and it was easy to drive anywhere in Kauai. Minor note: because the highway was close, you can hear it. After a couple days though, we were used to it and was no problem for us. • Along with the wild chickens & roosters (which you will find EVERYWHERE on the island), the place also has resident chickens (yum, fresh eggs), goats & pigs (all cute and friendly). They were not bothersome at all. • You may see a few bugs around-I'm not a bug person, but it was totally fine. • Overall, we had a good experience and we would recommend this place to anyone who wants a non-resorty experience at a great value. All in all, we had a great time at the Coconut Cottage! 5/5 stars. Thanks Dave!
Dave's cottage pictures are as advertised. It is one of three properties surrounding his home.
****however there were bugs, decent size spiders, cockroaches and other critters inside the home. He does spray but they are there. If you are concerned about these things do not stay here. Mosquitoes were also very prevalent around the property but not inside. Bug spray advised.****
I would recommend coconut cottage to some who can handle it but definitely not all. It's a charming space with the promise of excursions in a great location in Kauai. If your looking for something different then resorts or hotels this is an option but it wasn't for us.
PAUL YOU WERE FANTASTIC I LOVED HAVING YOU STAY WITH US IN THE COCONUT COTTAGE...GETTING CRAZY ON THE BEACH AND STAYING UP ALL NIGHT DRINKING MAI TAI' S WAS FANTASTIC...YES I KNOW I PROBABLY DANCED TO LONG WITH YOU WIFE, BUT I WAS HAVING SO MUCH FUN..BOTH MARY AND I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU GUYS RETURN. AND YES I WILL MAKE SURE I SHUT THE DOOR NEXT TIME, VERY FUNNY REVIEW HA HA HA LOL......SEE YOU GUYS THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
Overall, we really enjoyed our time at the Coconut Cottage. We found everything to be very clean and we enjoyed the house decorations and general atmosphere. We were glad to know about the toilet situation from other reviews. It wasn't a problem at all, but it would have been strange to find out about it only upon arriving. Dave was very friendly and helpful, and even found beach toys for our son. While he was around and available to help, we also felt like we had our privacy. For other people who might consider the Coconut Cottage with young children - our son (13 months old) loved the animals, especially going out to say hello to the goats in the morning. However, the stairs are precarious and it was a constant battle to keep him from climbing up them. We enjoyed the location in Anahola and found it to be perfect for exploring the north shore, where we spent most of our time.
