Bed & Breakfast - Private room · Derryconnor, Donegal, Ireland

The Space

I have a traditional Irish cottage, it's around 200 years old, with a lot of local history. Its small from the outside, but has 4 bedrooms, kitchen, living room and store room. I am redecorating it as my new home and I love it. The room I am renting, is a good size at 11 square meters, it has a lovely big comfortable antique brass bed, wooden floor and vintage furniture, and a nice view of the mountains and landscape. I am trying to restore as traditional as I can, but its kind of looking, shabby chic and quite vintage.

It is an old cottage, so if you are particular about dust etc this may not be for you. I use turf/peat, and its quite messy.

I also recently done up another room, with bunk beds and a double air bed, I can offer a deal for this room for groups of 2-4 people. Email for further details.

The living room is very cosy with an open fire, you are welcome to relax there during your stay. I also have wifi, but no television I'm afraid.

I can’t recommend a visit to this part of Ireland highly enough, Donegal is amazing, simply stunning natural beauty everywhere, rich in culture, and lots of things to do. I organize weekly adventure and culture experiences called Rock agus Roam. There is something for everyone rock climbing on sea cliffs, hill walking on our mountains and glens, sea kayaking, as well as sailing. I have my own tourism business here. The people here are not only warm and friendly but all have a story to tell and a song for every occasion. You make a connection with this dramatic and beautiful place that you will never forget.

Derryconnor, my neighbourhood, is a Gaelige speaking rural area with breathtaking landscape all around. The local village has a lovely hotel, pizza wine bar which often has intimate theatre and other entertainment, lovely cosy pubs serving wonderful guinness with traditional Irish music sessions regularly and always friendly faces. A pub close by has one of the best traditional Irish music sessions in Ireland, twice a week. Not to be missed.

And the food. Donegal does great food. There is no shortage of locally sourced fresh produce on the plates of bistro’s, pubs, restaurants and hotels up and down the County.

Nearby there are golden beaches to walk and plenty activities if that's what you would like, including pony/horse trekking, kayaking, golf, traditional music sessions, some of the best and most famous in Ireland. There are amazing walks mapped out, along the coastline, around the mountains of Muckish and Errigal, both to be seen out the windows of my house. I love to walk and take in the beautiful surroundings. There are local bus services passing outside throughout the day, I always recommend a car but I won't mind giving you a lift here and there. I will do my utmost to ensure you a pleasant stay.

All the practical things are taken care of in Donegal. It is only 2.5 hours from Belfast, 90 minutes to Derry, about 4.5 hours from Dublin and Galway by car. It has its own airport and is right on the door step of Derry – City of Culture 2013. It’s a perfect destination whether you are on a shoe-string budget or if you can splash out, we have it all here.

A visit to Donegal will always be special and never forgotten.

  • Moira is a very kind, extremely caring and outgoing person with a terrific personality and we enjoyed getting to know her during our (short) stay. Her cute little cottage is kind of a rough diamond and she puts a lot of effort in it. As we stayed there in mid-March it got rather cold at night and the fact that there was no proper heating was a bit of a hurdle to take but as we knew that we'd be staying in a cottage in the very north of Ireland we were prepared to have to face low temperatures. Also the house wasn't the cleanest I've ever seen but it's charm, Moira's taste of furnishing and her kindness definitely outweighed these small flaws and we also loved her cute cat. Furthermore Moira provided us some simple but very delicious breakfast.
All in all I have to say that I don't regret having stayed with Moira (and Roberto) and that we really had a very good time with her. I wish her all the best for the future!

  • Moira is class. She is such a warm and friendly host. She was very easy-going for the fact that we were staying for such a short time, and even got up at 6 AM to make sure we had breakfast and say goodbye! She knows her geography so well (both the mountains and the pubs) and she is the ideal person to show you around the area, or give you suggestions. We had a perfect stay and Moira made it so fun for us. We will be back!

  • This was our first AirB&B stay and weren't quite sure what to expect.
Moira was very welcoming and came to the nearest village to meet us and guide us to her place. She was very friendly and provided us with home-baked soda farls for breakfast -delicious|

  • Had a great stay with Moira! An absolutely beautiful countryside, perfect if you want to get away to hike the mountains, surf the beaches, or just relax and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Moira's cottage is a great cozy place to come back after a day of exploring to warm up and relax. Make sure to ask Moira about the local sessions if you want to hear great traditional music as well. This part of Donegal is a wonderful place to meet new friends that will keep you coming back!

  • Moiras place is nice and quiet with some possibilities to go out for walks and enjoy the beautiful landscape. The sea isn't far either. Moira was very nice and friendly and her recommended places to eat and drink were good ones!

  • This is a perfect refuge from the hectic life schedule most of us have. The location offers great panoramic views of Errigal and Muckish Mountains; lovely, breathtaking stunning, unspoilt beaches nearby and not so far away from the busy villages of Falcarragh and Dunfanaghy if you fancy some shopping or social life. Moira herself is involved in a lot of local community projects and can give plenty of tipps for local activities as well from her own developing project rock and roam. We enjoyed the wee cottage with its all slightly shabby, artistic upcycling chic and loved her absolutely chilled-out cat. Bertie rocks!

  • Moira was a great host, nice and pleasant.
She knows the area and is full of tips on places to visit and places.
The house is well located, not far from the sea
    I recommend this host.

  • Host very friendly, helpful and easy going. Met me at the local village to guide me back to the cottage - much appreciated. Nice country location close to interesting historic attractions. Cottage in process of refurbishment. Excellent breakfast!

  • We had a very pleasant stay with Moira. She welcomed us very warmly and made us feel at home since the first minutes. Her home is a old rural cottage, still under renovation. It is ideally located in a quiet area and very close to the sea and the mountains. The breakfast was varied and always very good and plentiful. It included different sort of bread made by Moira herself. Moira is very good at suggesting ideas on what to do in the area, very good at giving directions and very helpful.

About
A little about me, I moved back home from London where I lived for 6 years,, nearly 2 years ago. I just got tired and bored of the city and a crazy hectic lifestyle. The cottage is my mothers home, it's about 200 years old and has been empty for many many years. It's in an idyllic spot with stunning views of Muckish and Errigal mountains, which you can see from nearly every window. I am refurbishing the cottage, it's a challenging and exciting project, and if one had told me that this is where I would be right now and loving it, I would have laughed in their faces, but here I am and life couldn't be better. I have a business in tourism, I design adventure and culture breaks for this part of Donegal. I've managed to squeeze in a lot of travel, around mostly Europe, Spain, Hungary, the Basque country, also travelled around the West Indies, crossed the Atlantic ocean on a 120 foot yacht, one of few girls in the world to have done that apparently and also taught English as a foreign language. I love to travel, but these days I am more interested at what is on my own door step and my own culture. Last night I got out of my car after a long trip and I was struck with awe at the sky, it was just amazing, so clear, so many the stars and so bright, if you're into star gazing then I say here is perfect for that. That happens often to me here, being stopped in my tracks, day or night, I just love it, and would like to share that with my guests. I could go on and on here, but I think if you have read this far, you must be interested in visiting Donegal, so come and see for yourself, stay with me here in my nice Irish cottage, I'll look after you. I'm very friendly and easy to talk to, I laugh a lot because I see the funny side of things first and foremost and always think that something good will come out of everything, if you can keep it real. I think you will have an absolute ball in Donegal and be planning your next trip before you leave, that's just what happens to everyone who comes here. Drop me an email anytime too for any further info. Good luck and see you soon :o) Moira Ps. My motto in life "do it like you mean it"
