Description

The space

I have a traditional Irish cottage, it's around 200 years old, with a lot of local history. Its small from the outside, but has 4 bedrooms. Its sort of under construction as we're always fixing it up. We try to live as sustainable and as conscious as we can. We use the well for water, eat organic, we have our chickens so breakfast eggs are organic and we make all our own bread. We also cut turf in the bog near the house - although thats not sustainable.

The room I'm renting, is 11 square meters, it has a lovely big comfortable antique brass bed, wooden floor and vintage furniture, and a wonderful view of the mountains and endless landscape. I'm trying to restore the house as traditional as I can, its kind of looking, shabby chic and quite vintage but very cosy when you're snuggled up in front of the fire looking out over the mountain.

It is an old cottage, so if you're particular about dust etc it may not be for you. WE use turf/peat, and with the ashes its quite messy but we do our best to keep it clean at all times.

The living room is very cosy with an open fire, you are welcome to relax there during your stay. I also have wifi, but no television I'm afraid.

I can’t recommend a visit to this part of Ireland highly enough, Donegal is amazing, simply stunning natural beauty everywhere, rich in culture, and lots of things to do.

The people here are not only warm and friendly but all have a story to tell and a song for every occasion. You make a connection with this dramatic and beautiful place that you will never forget.

Derryconnor, my neighbourhood, is a Gaeilge speaking rural area. The local village is two miles away, and there are traditional Irish music sessions 4 nights a week and 7 in the summer months and always full of friendly faces. A pub close by has one of the best traditional Irish music sessions in Ireland. Not to be missed.

And the food. Donegal does great food. There is no shortage of locally sourced fresh produce on the plates of bistro’s, pubs, restaurants and hotels up and down the County.

Nearby there are golden beaches to walk and plenty activities if that's what you would like, including pony/horse trekking, kayaking, rock climbing, mountaineering. There are amazing walks mapped out, along the coastline, around the mountains of Muckish and Errigal, both to be seen out the windows of my house. I love to walk and take in the beautiful surroundings. There are local bus services passing outside throughout the day, I always recommend a car but I won't mind giving you a lift here and there. I will do my utmost to ensure you a pleasant stay.

All the practical things are taken care of in Donegal. It is only 2.5 hours from Belfast, 90 minutes to Derry, about 4.5 hours from Dublin and Galway by car. We have our one airport too. It’s a perfect destination whether you are on a shoe-string budget or if you can splash out, we have it all here.

A visit to Donegal will always be special and never forgotten.

We can hang out, if I'm going out, guests are welcome to come along. You're welcome to just be with us as we are.

The neighborhood

Derryconnor, my neighbourhood, is a Gaelige speaking rural area with breathtaking landscape all around. The local village - Gortahork has a lovely hotel, pizza wine bar, lovely cosy pubs serving wonderful Guinness with traditional Irish music sessions regularly and friendly faces. A pub close by has one of the best traditional Irish music sessions in Ireland, twice a week. Not to be missed.
You can enjoy walking around where I live, you can can see both Muckish mountain and Errigal mountain. The beach is about 20 mins walk away.

Getting around

There is plenty of buses passing by, in the morning and afternoon. Towards and from Dublin, Galway and Belfast.

Other things to note

There are local bus services passing outside throughout the day, I always recommend a car but I won't mind giving you a lift here and there. There is also the option of renting a bike and or e-bike. They can be delivered to my house for when you arrive or during your stay.

Moira was a gracious host and when she needed to leave I had the pleasure of having her mother Grace as my host. I loved knowing I was staying in their ancestral home and to see all that Moira has done to bring the house back to its former state. She has wonderful taste. She directed me to the best places to view and the best evening venues.

We had a great time with Moira and Connor. They were kind enough to meet us in the local town to guide us to their peaceful location. The cottage was very cozy and had a great atmosphere from the moment we walked in. Breakfast was great as well - would definitely recommend staying here. Also, their cat and 2 dogs were incredibly friendly and a pleasure to relax with by the fireplace.

We really enjoyed our time here with Moira, Conor, Roberto and the dogs in "the real Donegal". Moira met us in a nearby village and we followed on to the lovely old cottage. The cottage is surrounded by beautiful views and lots of greenery. Moira had some great recommendations for nearby pubs, eateries, towns and activities. We especially enjoyed the delicious breakfast- fresh eggs, homemade soda bread and lots of spreads to choose from! It was also very cosy sitting by the fire enjoying a drink. Would recommend anyone visiting to have a car, as the nearest towns are a few miles away. Thank you again

A little about me, I moved back home from London where I lived for 6 years,, 2 years ago. I just got tired and bored of the city and a crazy hectic lifestyle. The cottage is my mothers original home, it's about 200 years old and has been empty for many many years. It's in an idyllic spot with stunning views of Muckish and Errigal mountains, which you can see from nearly every window. I am refurbishing the cottage, it's a challenging and exciting project, and if one had told me that this is where I would be right now and loving it, I would have laughed in their faces, but here I am and life couldn't be better.

I have a tourism enterprice, I design adventure and culture breaks and experiences for this most beautiful corner of Donegal. Known as Ireland's cradle of culture.

I've managed to squeeze in a lot of travel, around mostly Europe, Spain, Hungary, the Basque country, also travelled around the West Indies, crossed the Atlantic ocean on a 120 foot yacht, one of few girls in the world to have done that apparently and also taught English as a foreign language. I love to travel, but these days I am more interested at what is on my own door step and my own culture. Last night I got out of my car after a long trip and I was struck with awe at the sky, it was just amazing, so clear, so many the stars and so bright, if you're into star gazing then I say here is perfect for that. That happens often to me here, being stopped in my tracks, day or night, I just love it, and would like to share that with my guests. I could go on and on here, but I think if you have read this far, you must be interested in visiting Donegal, so come and see for yourself, stay with me here in my nice Irish cottage, I'll do my best to ensure you have a great time.
I'm very friendly and easy to talk to, I laugh a lot because I see the funny side of things first and foremost and always think that something good will come out of everything, if you can keep it real.

I think you will have an absolute ball in Donegal and be planning your next trip before you leave, that's just what happens to everyone who comes here. Drop me an email anytime too for any further info.
Good luck and see you soon :o)
