The Space

I have a traditional Irish cottage, it's around 200 years old, with a lot of local history. Its small from the outside, but has 4 bedrooms, kitchen, living room and store room. I am redecorating it as my new home and I love it. The room I am renting, is a good size at 11 square meters, it has a lovely big comfortable antique brass bed, wooden floor and vintage furniture, and a nice view of the mountains and landscape. I am trying to restore as traditional as I can, but its kind of looking, shabby chic and quite vintage.

It is an old cottage, so if you are particular about dust etc this may not be for you. I use turf/peat, and its quite messy.

I also recently done up another room, with bunk beds and a double air bed, I can offer a deal for this room for groups of 2-4 people. Email for further details.

The living room is very cosy with an open fire, you are welcome to relax there during your stay. I also have wifi, but no television I'm afraid.

I can’t recommend a visit to this part of Ireland highly enough, Donegal is amazing, simply stunning natural beauty everywhere, rich in culture, and lots of things to do. I organize weekly adventure and culture experiences called Rock agus Roam. There is something for everyone rock climbing on sea cliffs, hill walking on our mountains and glens, sea kayaking, as well as sailing. I have my own tourism business here. The people here are not only warm and friendly but all have a story to tell and a song for every occasion. You make a connection with this dramatic and beautiful place that you will never forget.

Derryconnor, my neighbourhood, is a Gaelige speaking rural area with breathtaking landscape all around. The local village has a lovely hotel, pizza wine bar which often has intimate theatre and other entertainment, lovely cosy pubs serving wonderful guinness with traditional Irish music sessions regularly and always friendly faces. A pub close by has one of the best traditional Irish music sessions in Ireland, twice a week. Not to be missed.

And the food. Donegal does great food. There is no shortage of locally sourced fresh produce on the plates of bistro’s, pubs, restaurants and hotels up and down the County.

Nearby there are golden beaches to walk and plenty activities if that's what you would like, including pony/horse trekking, kayaking, golf, traditional music sessions, some of the best and most famous in Ireland. There are amazing walks mapped out, along the coastline, around the mountains of Muckish and Errigal, both to be seen out the windows of my house. I love to walk and take in the beautiful surroundings. There are local bus services passing outside throughout the day, I always recommend a car but I won't mind giving you a lift here and there. I will do my utmost to ensure you a pleasant stay.

All the practical things are taken care of in Donegal. It is only 2.5 hours from Belfast, 90 minutes to Derry, about 4.5 hours from Dublin and Galway by car. It has its own airport and is right on the door step of Derry – City of Culture 2013. It’s a perfect destination whether you are on a shoe-string budget or if you can splash out, we have it all here.

A visit to Donegal will always be special and never forgotten.

  • Moira and her delightful down-to-earth home were a real find! After a long conversation with this articulate, engaging and enthusiastic woman, I was quite disappointed that I couldn't stay longer than one night. Moira is very accommodating and helpful. Her knowledge of, and passion for, her local patch of Donegal is inspirational.
On my first visit to Ireland this was a wonderful place to stay, off the beaten track, beautiful, and VERY Irish!
On my arrival Moira met me in the nearby town to escort me to her home. Because I had an early start the next day Moira left the makings for a good breakfast ready in the kitchen.
I heartily recommend Moira and her home to any traveller.
Oh, and Roberto the cat is very friendly too.

  • My experience staying with Moira and her Mum Grace was exceptional. The listing for the accommodation was exactly as it said on the tin and more. Wonderful neighbourhood with magnificient views. Will I go back - without doubt so I can experience more of the wonderful hospitality, scenery and food - including freshly dug potatoes from the garden......and hearing our wonderful Irish Language spoken by Moira and her Mum. This for me is the real Ireland .

  • This place in Ireland is beautiful. It's a short walk to the water, and amazing scenery. Getting to travel through this part of the country was a treat. Moira made us feel so welcome and even took us to a local pub for special live Irish music. I would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks!

  • Moira is a wonderfully dynamic and generous host. Her place is in a delightful rural Donegal setting with fabulous mountain views. It is a great place to stay while exploring the fabulous beauty of County Donegal. County Donegal has so much to offer. One could easily spend weeks exploring the area. Moira can assist with adventure and outdoor activities.

  • Moira is a nice person, sociable, friendly and helpful and as she works in the tourism industry can organise many activities in the area...She is passionate about her region and can provide suggestions on things to do and place to eat and drink...

The house is clean and comfortable and is up in the hills so you know you are in the country and I guess a car would be quite useful......

  • We only stayed with Moira 1 night. We arrived quite late and she met us in the nearest village which was great of her. It's a lovely home and the bedroom has a great view. She also served up a nice breakfast. Very friendly and easy to talk to.

  • We were looking forward to staying with Moira in her cottage so were a bit disappointed with the check in times either early morning or not till 6pm or 8pm or later. We chose 6pm and then realised we might be 15 minutes late so changed it to the 8pm time at a local supermarket. We waited for 45 minutes as it started to rain wondering if something bad had happened to Moira. She then arrived and said she had been exercising and forgot the time she seemed to think this was okay and didn't appear to think she should be apologetic. By the time we got to her house it was 9pm and we had been waiting round for hours, not a good holiday experience. We would have been fine if she had appeared to feel even slightly sorry for keeping us waiting as a result it ruined the experience. The cottage is nice and the bed very comfortable but it is a long way from any local pubs with music which means you have to drive if you want to go out.

  • Staying with Moira was a pleasure. She and her mother took care and looked after us. We were invited to join her organised outdoor activities which was very awesome. We spent lovely two days at her house and she recommended many places in Donegal to visit. This was very helpful. Moira is a very friendly and open-minded person and we would stay at her place another time for sure.

  • Moira is a very kind, extremely caring and outgoing person with a terrific personality and we enjoyed getting to know her during our (short) stay. Her cute little cottage is kind of a rough diamond and she puts a lot of effort in it. As we stayed there in mid-March it got rather cold at night and the fact that there was no proper heating was a bit of a hurdle to take but as we knew that we'd be staying in a cottage in the very north of Ireland we were prepared to have to face low temperatures. Also the house wasn't the cleanest I've ever seen but it's charm, Moira's taste of furnishing and her kindness definitely outweighed these small flaws and we also loved her cute cat. Furthermore Moira provided us some simple but very delicious breakfast.
All in all I have to say that I don't regret having stayed with Moira (and Roberto) and that we really had a very good time with her. I wish her all the best for the future!

About
A little about me, I moved back home from London where I lived for 6 years,, 2 years ago. I just got tired and bored of the city and a crazy hectic lifestyle. The cottage is my mothers original home, it's about 200 years old and has been empty for many many years. It's in an idyllic spot with stunning views of Muckish and Errigal mountains, which you can see from nearly every window. I am refurbishing the cottage, it's a challenging and exciting project, and if one had told me that this is where I would be right now and loving it, I would have laughed in their faces, but here I am and life couldn't be better. I have a tourism enterprice, I design adventure and culture breaks and experiences for this most beautiful corner of Donegal. Known as Ireland's cradle of culture. I've managed to squeeze in a lot of travel, around mostly Europe, Spain, Hungary, the Basque country, also travelled around the West Indies, crossed the Atlantic ocean on a 120 foot yacht, one of few girls in the world to have done that apparently and also taught English as a foreign language. I love to travel, but these days I am more interested at what is on my own door step and my own culture. Last night I got out of my car after a long trip and I was struck with awe at the sky, it was just amazing, so clear, so many the stars and so bright, if you're into star gazing then I say here is perfect for that. That happens often to me here, being stopped in my tracks, day or night, I just love it, and would like to share that with my guests. I could go on and on here, but I think if you have read this far, you must be interested in visiting Donegal, so come and see for yourself, stay with me here in my nice Irish cottage, I'll do my best to ensure you have a great time. I'm very friendly and easy to talk to, I laugh a lot because I see the funny side of things first and foremost and always think that something good will come out of everything, if you can keep it real. I think you will have an absolute ball in Donegal and be planning your next trip before you leave, that's just what happens to everyone who comes here. Drop me an email anytime too for any further info. Good luck and see you soon :o) Moira Ps. My motto in life "do it like you mean it"
