The Little Valley Cottage is really a magical spot. It's hard to believe you are so close to the city once you are in the cottage, surrounded by lush forest and constant bird song. It was such a pleasure to enjoy the quiet and the nature, and watch the birds. Although there were only two of us, it would be a great spot for family; there's plenty of room. I noticed that a previous reviewer said a car would be required here, but we didn't have a car and found it very easy to hop on the bus to the grocery store or right into the center of town. Our hosts were really gracious. They respected our privacy but were very happy to chat about the cottage, the (interesting!) history of the property, and the local bird life. I'm so glad that we had the chance to stay in the cottage, and would be happy to stay again.

Such a great well set out little place. Everything we needed. Gayle gave us great directions and we had no trouble finding it. The grounds are lovely and the bird sounds beautiful. Dunedin pleasantly surprised us.

And then there are those places you find on this planet that you can truly imagine that you are the only person / people that exist if you want. This is what Gayle’s place offers. Whether you are in the cottage or sitting on the deck in the sunshine there is nothing but birdsong and crickets to be heard. The view of the bush is wonderful and the gardens surrounding the cottage are planted beautifully both for looks and attraction of birds closer to the cottage. Occasionally reality reminds you that there are others around when you hear a car in the driveway, a dog barking far off in the distance, or a chainsaw (not forestry work – just backyard household stuff) or a helicopter somewhere. The point is that this truly can be a retreat with the bonus that civilisation, convenience and beautiful walks (albeit heart-pumping) are incredibly close (5 min drive). In the cottage there is warmth both in décor and heating. There is cleanliness throughout and the convenience of a full kitchen. The wifi was strong and all amenities catered for. I found the cottage spacious for one person and can imagine four people being accommodated here also without feeling squashed or on top of one another. The only thing to note is that the driveway would not be suited to vehicles with low spoilers. For me Gayle’s place was beyond perfect and a place I would so happily return to again … and again … I leave being so glad that it is a part of me and so very thankful that Gayle shares it with others.

This was a great place to visit with children as it was close to town yet offered space for children to play and explore. We utilised the parks and the school playground which were all within easy walking distances.

This cottage is in a very beautiful forest setting with lots of bird life, yet minutes from the supermarket, botanical gardens and a fantastic lookout of the entire city.

So a little bit about me. I have recently moved back to Dunedin with my family after living in Sydney for the past 6 years. After living on this property for nearly 15 years my Mum decided to sell this house and we jumped at the opportunity to buy it. We love the outdoors and couldn't think of a better place to bring up our family. We live in the big house next to the cottage and just love being surrounded by about 5 acres of native bush, lawns and gardens. You will often see us busy sculpting and caring for out little piece of paradise.
