About This Listing
I have a large (12' x 25') room in my East Village apartment, currently going unused, which I am happy to open up for people still living without power, water, etc., after the devastation of Sandy, or to those who came to help them. Please be aware this is on the fourth floor of a walk-up, and you will need to be okay with three nosy cats, two of them friendly, the other aloof. There is also only one bathroom, but I recently had a family of four Iraqi refugees staying with me, and we contrived to get along. You will be sleeping on an air mattress, but will be given the run of the apartment, including use of the kitchen. I will cover utilities, you would need to provide your own food. The only TV - no cable, just network - is in my bedroom but I am willing to share, and I have a working laptop that would be available for you. Please be prepared to prove that you are indeed either a victim or volunteer; sorry to seem suspicious, but if I am trying to do good for someone in need, I don't want to be the victim of a scammer who just wants a free place to stay.
Lisa was a wonderful hostess. I can't thank her enough for opening her home to me as I was working with the disaster relief. She went out of her way to make sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. She went so far as to offer me use of a wonderful down comforter that I really enjoyed. Lisa has a wealth of knowledge of the neighborhood and it's history.
About the Host, Lisa
I'm a native New Yorker who has lived and traveled extensively all over the world. Three decades ago I helped homestead an abandoned building in the then-vicious East Village, living without water, light, heat, windows, plumbing, etc; this is the space in which my guests will be staying, but my apartment is fully rehabbed and full of light, space and antiques. And three cats. I am a big fan of reading, cooking, watching zombie and horror TV and movies, and doing environmental volunteer work.
