About This Listing
A private, modern, ocean-view timber frame cabin in Otter Point, BC on southern Vancouver Island. A perfect retreat for writers, explorers, and romantic getaways. 4 nights min. (3 nights w/ surcharge). Discount for extended and solo stays.
Little Nest Cabin is tucked in the hillside of Otter Point Retreat. Large south-facing windows and skylights bring in light from sunrise to sunset; perfectly beautiful whether surrounded by clear skies or moody coastal mist and fog.
The property is shared with a second Airbnb listing for Salal House that may be booked for up to 4 additional guests separately or in combination with this cabin.
We offer a ultra-comfortable king-size bed as well as an ottoman in the living room area that can fold out into a single bed. Curtains provide between the sleeping and living areas. On request we'd be happy to make the king bed up for two singles with separate duvets.
Little Nest Cabin is friendly to those with dust mite and animal allergies. We have wall-to-wall fir wood floors and bathroom tile (the only carpet is a wool rug in the entry way). We don't host pets. Only non-toxic cleaning products are used.
The kitchenette is outfitted with everything you'd need to prepare a fabulous meal away from home. Sooke also offers several recommended and well-reviewed restaurants. For a reasonable charge we'd be happy to provide continental breakfast fixings or items like locally made gourmet soup, deli platters, smoked salmon, or even a fresh-made pizza ready to bake.
Amenities include: WiFi, gas fire stove, DVD player, flat screen TV, and movie collection, telephone for incoming calls and for local outgoing calls, AM/FM radio, and washer/dryer.
In the forest-view bathroom we have a heated tiled floor, deep bathtub with rain-feature shower head and separate handheld shower, freshly washed face, body, and bath towels. Shampoo, conditioner, and hair dryer are provided.
Bed are made with freshly washed sheets, duvet & covers, and comfortable pillows. Two bedside tables have storage for small clothes items. A custom-built fir wood wall rack offers a shelf and hooks and hangers for larger items.
In the kitchenette we have a counter-height refrigerator, dishwasher, two-burner ceramic cook top, counter top oven, air popcorn popper, vent hood (with fan, spotlights & clock), pots, pans, cooking implements, utensils, dishes, and glassware etc.
We provide a thermal French press coffee carafe, bean grinder, and tea pot. Please pack your own beans. Also provided are a selection of loose and bagged herbal, green, and black teas, and hot chocolate mix. For your convenience we also supply a small amount of salt, pepper, basic spice mixes, popcorn kernels, rice, and cooking/salad oils.
Interaction with Guests
Juergen and Sarah reside off-property in nearby Victoria. Guests check in and check out by telephone. Cabin is accessed with door code (there isn't a key) provided shortly before arrival. Hosts are available to answer questions by telephone.
Located 10 km west of Sooke and 50 km west of BC capital Victoria. Situated on the coast of the Salish Sea (Strait of Juan de Fuca) with a view of Orveas Bay, Sheringham Point Lighthouse, and Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, Otter Point Retreat is just a short drive from some of Vancouver Island's best beaches, parks, and hiking trails.
The property is 1.5 acres sloping from a neighboring privately-owned forest to the road to Gordon's Beach. You'll experience sounds and sights of a friendly beach-side rural residential neighborhood with the occasional bear visitor!
Watch sail and fishing boats and windsurfers and kite gliders and the occasional whale spout from almost anywhere in the cabin!
There are plenty of grocery, restaurant, and cafe options within a 10-minute drive. Also library, swim pool, and skate arena as well as fishing and wildlife outfitters, bike and kayak rentals, and local hiking groups. We also recommend the local open stage music afternoon held at a local cafe...always a packed house!
We recommend guests arrive by car. There is taxi service in the area but this mode of transport would limit your ability to explore. The nearest bus stop is more than 2 km away.
Other Things to Note
While there is a land line telephone for use in both residences, Otter Point Retreat has very limited cellular service. While some USA AT&T customers report good service, and BC cell customers will receive a good signal in Sooke and surrounding area, there is no BC cell service from Otter Point Retreat or in the immediate area.
We kindly ask that guests leave the cabin clean. This includes the kitchen area and all food preparation items used. Put simply, please leave it as you found it.
We're happy to take care of washing bed, bath, and kitchen linens for you but we appreciate your efforts to keep them in good condition.
We always do a detailed and thorough clean between guests but if the cabin requires any unexpected cleaning or repairs a claim may be made on the security deposit to recover our costs.
1. Read House Manual before arrival.
2. Call us to check in when you arrive.
3. No smoking (or the full security deposit will be applied to professional cleaning and additional damage charges may apply).
4. Leave outdoor shoes outside (bring your own favorite cosy socks or slippers!).
5. Leave wet jackets, gear, and umbrellas on outside hooks on the covered porch.
6. Take good care of our septic system...no coffee grounds or other food down drain...nothing plastic or paper (other than toilet paper) down the toilet!
7. Follow instructions provided in guide to clean and prepare cabin for your departure.
8. Call to check out when leaving.
I cannot say enough positive things about this paradise in the trees. What a beautiful space to live in. From the second you walk in, you are immersed in nature from the comfort and exquisite detail of this lovely home. The views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca greet you from each room in this open-space home (including as you lay in bed and from the couch!). The hosts have paid such perfect attention to every detail and were so kind and responsive, just wonderful. And it's a perfect location from the heart of downtown Sooke and from the big city of Victoria. This is a place that was very hard for me to leave. I would love to return in a heartbeat! I highly highly recommend this beautiful retreat.
Jurgen and Sarah did a remarkable job of making me feel welcome through efficient communication, prompt replies to emails and a handwritten note to welcome me. The property is beautiful and met all my expectations. The views are spectacular and the space is very private. I had the entire property to myself and didn't see another person during my stay. I left feeling rejuvenated.
This place was phenomenal. My girlfriend I made a top 5 list.
1) the view. the pictures just don't do the view justice.
2) the little alcove of trees that surround the house itself.
3) the subtle touches.from the bath salts to the cookware, this place had what we needed.
4) proximity to great trails and beaches. we spent most of our time outside this trip and we feel like we only saw a fraction of this great area.
5) the modern/rustic blend of the interior. we're pretty sure one of the owners has a design background because this place is neat yet homey.
Hi Ed, your comments are very sweet - so appreciated. Thanks for the top 5 list too, we're always curious to hear what out guests enjoy the most and the little things they notice and appreciate. Thanks again to you both for taking the time to travel to Vancouver Island to relax awhile at Otter Point Retreat!
The place was great - the view more impressive than on the website. Everything was very clean and the thoughtful stocking of the kitchen was appreciated. Close to great hiking. We would definitely stay again without hesitation. Thanks for a great place and good communication. Joanne and Gord
My husband and I stayed at Jürgen & Sarah's Little Nest for 5 days over Christmas, and I can say that the cabin is even better than advertised. It is modern in design and very cozy, and perfectly laid out for two people to enjoy the private and scenic setting. There is a great view across the water to the Sheringham Point lighthouse, and you can watch beautiful sunsets and stormy weather from both the house and the deck.
The bathroom is generously sized, and the bath tub is a delight after a cold beach hike. The kitchen is small but we managed to turn out some gourmet meals using the two burner cooktop and toaster oven! The house is also stocked with great product, snacks, and enough coffee and tea to get you started on your stay, which is a very thoughtful and generous addition.
Sooke is a great little town with a good grocery store, cute cafes and an amazing Viennese bakery. If you are headed to Vancouver Island for a break, you should definitely stay at Little Nest!
We thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend at the Little Nest. The cabin is in a really great location for hiking and sight seeing along the southwest side of Vancouver Island. The kitchen is thoroughly outfitted for all your foodie and cooking needs. The porch has excellent sunset and star gazing views over the Juan de Fuca Strait. The living room is super cozy and has a solid selection of DVD’s to choose from. For two designers, we were thoroughly impressed by the architecture and design of the cabin. We will surely be back!
Sarah and Jurgen were super attentive and made our first Airbnb experience very enjoyable. From recommendations around town to various notes on the cabin, we were well taken care of!
