About this listing
Your own private retreat awaits. The Little Nest cabin is a perfect destination for writers, explorers, and romantic getaways on the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island (near Sooke and Victoria). Ocean views to thrill and a gas-fired stove to keep you cosy.
Little Nest Cabin is tucked in the hillside of Otter Point Retreat with views of Orveas Bay, Juan de Fuca Strait, and the coast of Washington State. Large south-facing windows and skylights bring in light from sunrise to sunset; perfectly beautiful whether surrounded by clear skies or moody coastal mist and fog.
The property is shared with a second Airbnb listing for Salal House that may be booked for up to 3-4 additional guests separately or in combination with this cabin.
We offer a ultra-comfortable king-size bed. Curtains provide between the sleeping and living areas. On request we'd be happy to make the king bed up for two singles with separate duvets.
The cabin and surrounding property are not suitable for babies and young children (under 5).
Little Nest Cabin is friendly to those with dust mite and animal allergies. We have wall-to-wall fir wood floors and bathroom tile (the only carpet is a wool rug in the entry way). We don't host pets. Only non-toxic cleaning products are used.
The kitchenette is outfitted with everything you'd need to prepare a fabulous meal away from home. Sooke offers good grocery store and bakery options and many recommended and well-reviewed cafés and restaurants.
Amenities include: WiFi, gas fire stove, DVD player, flat screen TV, and movie collection, telephone for incoming calls and for local outgoing calls, AM/FM radio, and washer/dryer.
In the forest-view bathroom we have a heated tiled floor, deep bathtub with rain-feature shower head and separate handheld shower, freshly washed face, body, and bath towels. Shampoo, conditioner, and hair dryer are provided.
Bed are made with freshly washed sheets, duvet & covers, and comfortable pillows. Two bedside tables have storage for small clothes items. A custom-built fir wood wall rack offers a shelf and hooks and hangers for larger items.
In the kitchenette we have a counter-height refrigerator, dishwasher, two-burner ceramic cook top, counter top oven, air popcorn popper, vent hood (with fan, spotlights & clock), pots, pans, cooking implements, utensils, dishes, and glassware etc.
We provide a thermal French press coffee carafe, bean grinder, and tea pot. Please pack your own beans. Also provided are a selection of loose and bagged herbal, green, and black teas, and hot chocolate mix. For your convenience we also supply a small amount of salt, pepper, basic spice mixes, popcorn kernels, rice, and cooking/salad oils.
Interaction with Guests
Juergen and Sarah reside off-property in nearby Victoria. Guests check in and check out by Airbnb messaging. Your hosts are available to answer questions by telephone and Airbnb messaging.
Located 10 km west of Sooke and 50 km west of BC capital Victoria. Situated on the coast of the Salish Sea (Strait of Juan de Fuca) with a view of Orveas Bay, Sheringham Point Lighthouse, and Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, Otter Point Retreat is just a short drive from some of Vancouver Island's best beaches, parks, and hiking trails.
The property is 1.5 acres sloping from a neighbouring privately-owned forest to the road to Gordon's Beach. You'll experience sounds and sights of a friendly beach-side rural residential neighbourhood with the occasional visit from a deer (or raccoon or maybe even a bear!).
Watch sail and fishing boats and windsurfers and kite gliders and the occasional whale spout from almost anywhere in the cabin!
There are plenty of grocery, restaurant, and cafe options within a 10-minute drive. Also library, swim pool, and skate arena as well as fishing and wildlife outfitters, bike and kayak rentals, and local hiking groups. We also recommend the local open stage music afternoon held at a local cafe...always a packed house!
We recommend guests arrive by car. There is taxi service in the area but this mode of transport would limit your ability to explore and the long distances will make your trips costly. The nearest bus stop is more than 2 km away. Other than cars, West Coast Road is suitable for seasoned road touring cyclists only (and during full daylight only).
Other Things to Note
While there is a telephone for use for local calls in both residences, Otter Point Retreat has very limited cellular service. While some USA AT&T customers report good service, and BC cell customers will receive a good signal in Sooke and surrounding area, there is no BC cell service from Otter Point Retreat or in the immediate area.

We kindly ask that guests leave the house clean. Put simply, please leave it as you found it. Clean dishes, empty refrigerator, wipe down tables and counters, and tidy. We're happy to take care of washing all bedding, towels, and kitchen cloths for you at the end of your stay but if the house requires any cleaning beyond the basics a claim may be made on the security deposit to recover costs.
Please compost all food waste and recycle all clean paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Any paper items that have touched food must be placed in the garbage or composted.
The property and residences are intended to be quiet areas. Special events and parties are not permitted. There are only two parking spaces for the house and two for the cabin. If you will be hosting more than a dinner guest or two please check with us in advance.
No smoking in the cabin or house or anywhere on the property (the full security deposit will be applied to professional cleaning and additional damage charges may apply).
Leave your outdoor shoes outside.
Take good care of our septic system...flush only toilet paper. No coffee grounds or cooking oil down the sink drains. Thank you!

Jürgen, originally from the Heidelberg region of Germany, is a goldsmith with a knack for carpentry, timber frame construction, and furniture design. Sarah studied biology and teacher education at the University of Victoria. The pair designed the new Otter Point Retreat cabin together. Otter Point Retreat includes two listings available to book separately or together (Little Nest Cabin sleeps two and Salal House sleeps up to 5). Both were built by Jürgen. We love hosting travelers from near and far!
