Oia, pronounced ‘Ia’, is the most famous of all villages of Santorini. It is known throughout the world for its quiet life and fantastic sunset, and is certainly the most beautiful and picturesque village of Santorini.
The village is also situated on top of an impressive cliff and offers a spectacular view over the volcano of Palia and Nea Kameni and the island of Thirassia.
Oia is situated on the north of the island, 11 km away from Fira.
It is a traditional village with charming houses in narrow streets, blue domed churches, and sun-bathed verandas. Its streets have plenty of tourist shops, taverns, cafés, and other shops.
Oia has several cultural attractions like the Maritime Museum which houses a small library, items from the maritime life of the area, and the vestiges of a Venetian fortress.
Many artists fell in love with the area and settled there. For that reason, the village of Oia has many art galleries.
Oia also has a small port, Ammoudi, which can be reached by a set of 300 steps leading down. There, small boats can take you opposite, to the island of Thirassia. The beach of Armenis is also located there. Taverns in Oia offer visitors tasty meals of fresh fish

Such a great time in Maria's cave house !
We felt like locals amongst tourists for 3 days !
The view is stunning and the terrasse amazing !
Perfect location in the middle of Oia ! No car needed really
I didn't meet Maria, it was the porter who led us to Casa Sofia, and the porter gave us information regarding the cave house, the sunset, all we want to know and help to arrange transportation to ferry port next day. I thought the space might be limited for cave house, but, but, Casa Sofia is spacious, even ok for kids running inside. The view is great, we especially enjoy the morning sitting outside. Definitely a worth stay!
The apartment was amazing!! The views were breathtaking, it was quiet, yet right in the heart of Oia with the most relaxing patio from which to watch the sunset. Maria was great at communicating and she even arranged for an airport transport for us. If you want to stay in Oia, look no further!!
Casa Sofia is absolutely beautiful. If you are looking for an 'authentic' Santorini cave house experience, this is perfect. The view over the ocean is stunning (especially at dusk) and you are right in the middle of a very residential feeling area, yet within five minutes walking from the main shopping & restaurant street.
Major note - there are several hundred stairs you will have to descend every time you walk down to the house, or up to town. In summer this is an extremely hot walk - however its also all part of the experience.
Also - several of the photos in this listing are not actually of this house. The kitchenette down some stairs, and also the bedroom with stairs shown to the side are not in this house.
I only saw Maria once during my stay, but she was very lovely and offered me anything I needed. The two men who help her are amazing (I definitely recommend the port / airport transfer - you would struggle to find the house on your own, especially trying to carry luggage down!) but they are incredible and show you to the house and carry all of your bags.
Wifi and air con in the house are both good. The bathroom is outside, however only a few steps from the front door. Was not an issue to us.
Overall we had a very wonderful experience at this beautiful house, and would definitely recommend to others.
My wife and I highly recommend Casa Sofia, and probably many other of Maria's properties as far as service goes. It is the view and location at Casa Sofia that sets it apart. When looking for postcards, you will see Casa Sofia in many of them which is cool. Maria always answered the phone when I called and although we prefer trying the local transportation, she offered a taxi service at the airport which upon reflection we should have taken because our taxi guy didn't say much and took another couple along with us without giving us a break on the price like in other countries. The 3 taxis in front of us at the airport did the same thing. Although we had a taxi within 5 minutes at the airport, be prepared to wait for taxis for possibly an hour like we had to if you are at a restaurant or something. I was told by a local that there are only about 50 taxis on the whole island.
Maria's assistant Vasili who also shares the other part of the house at Casa Sofia (totally separate part) carried our bags and was very polite. We are in our 30s and 40s, but Vasili who is even older was rockin' up and down those stairs like a track star, carrying one of our bags. The island life has obviously been good to him:).
We were only here for 3 nights, but still had the maid service both days which was nice coming home to a clean home, bathroom, and bed. The blue door on the left of the main photo, closest to the sea is the bathroom. At first I wasn't sure about that, but walking outside at night in Santorini reminds you where you are, and it was actually very cool. It's also very quiet and peaceful at night, something you don't see during the day. There are lots of tourists in the summer, but Casa Sofia, although popular with photographers, still feels secluded enough. There are always people taking pictures from a few dozen steps above you because Casa Sofia is so beautiful. It lets you know you made the right choice. The steps aren't as bad as some other guests make it sound. Just stop and take a breather if you need. It's only 3 minutes to the top and the main "street"... worth it because you are so close to town but still secluded with this view.
We had an early flight out, so having Vasili close by was nice as he was at Casa Sofia at 4:45am to escort us to the van that took us and 3 other couples from other properties to the airport. We were sad to leave Casa Sofia & will call upon Maria when we return. The only suggestion we have for Maria and Vasili to write down the house instructions on paper as Vasili rushed through them really fast as it seemed he had another place to go next.
