The "Sunset Cottage" is perfect for your Hawaiian getaway! Views of the sunset and the tropical orchards abound, immersing you in your own tropical hideaway. Perfect for a couple or a small family, we are close to snorkeling, beaches and adventure!

The Space

You will fall in love with this spacious and sunny Ohana just minutes from snorkeling and South Kona beaches. Lovingly restored, this cottage features a 180 degree view surrounded by lush tropical flowers and looking out on an unforgettable sunset view.

We promise you will love this amazing bedroom with its picture windows looking out on lush tropical flowers and trees--it feels like you are in your own private Swiss Family Robinson but without sacrificing on amenities. The windows look out on acres of tropical flowers and fruits like mangos, papayas and plumeria.

The bedroom has a queen bed and separate sitting room that is perfect for curling up and reading about the fascinating history of this ancient part of the Big Island and its historic settlement by Captain Cook. In the distance is Kealakekua Bay, site of James Cook's first encounter with the people of Hawaii and later the place where he met his end. It is said that the bay is protected by the spirits of the alii, or chiefs, that led this proud nation prior to the arrival of the missionaries after Cook's discovery.

The bath in this cottage was practically built for royalty--it features a large jetted tub -and marble surround as well as a separate shower and dressing area. The tub peeks into the bedroom and out onto the property through two windows that allow for tons of natural light and a great cross-breeze on tradewind evenings.

The kitchenette is outfitted with a refrigerator, convection oven, two-burner hot plate, toaster, coffee maker, blender and microwave as well as a bar for two. The living room has a pullout couch that can provide additional sleeping space as well as a flat panel TV. The entire property features free wifi and additional services such as a dvd player are available upon request.

We are a quick five minute drive from the famed "two-step" for the best snorkeling the island has to offer. If you get down there bright and early you may be lucky enough to swim with the pod of dolphins that call these amazing beaches their home. Beach chairs and towels are available with the cottage.

The owners are onsite and we are always happy to help you plan or make recommendations so that you can make the most of your stay on the island. We offer free farm tours and provide a seasonal basket of our farm-fresh produce to help make your stay unique and special. We would be honored to have you as our guests and do everything we can to help make your trip to Hawaii the trip of a lifetime!

Guest Access

The cottage overlooks the Macadamia Nut Orchard and guests are free to enjoy the spacious grounds. There is a private outdoor eating area with a gas grill and convenient parking. The shared washer and dryer is located near the shop space.

Interaction with Guests

While we live onsite we do prefer to give you your space and privacy to enjoy your vacation getaway. We are always happy to answer questions and give you a tour of the farm (with advance notification).

  • What a wonderful, wonderful relaxing experience staying at Sunset Cottage (part of Lani Kai Gardens) was. The Ohana (that's Hawaiian for guest house) is just beaituful. The attention to detail - little candles, soaps and the happy colour scheme and spotless cleanliness were a delight to arrive in. The lush tropical working farm environs also added a wonderfuk flavour and we really enjoyed the nightly chorus of the singing koki (tree frogs) every night as their full choir lulled us further into relaxation. Mandi was incredibly helpful in the lead up to our arrival - even trying to source us a car when all was booked out!. (You will need a car to get around the island as things are rather a long distance from each other) Her parents, Ruth and Randy were equally welcoming and we appreciated everything they did to may our stay even more enjoyable. The cottage itself is a wonderful oasis within an oasis and we ceratinly enjoyed our time there. Just beautiful and oh, SO relaxing. We also really LOVED their three new kittens - Princess, Ernie and Bert who reminded us of our two that we had sadly left at home...and they entertained us ebery night and every morning with their affectionate play and loud, loud purrs...felt just like home!

  • We loved staying at Lani Kai Gardens. The cottage is exactly as pictured and was very clean. The kitchen was well stocked and we saved a lot of money cooking some of our own meals.
Randy and Ruth were so nice and helpful. We even extended our stay another night because we enjoyed it so much.
The cats are great, a little welcoming committee.
At night the sky is filled with more stars then I have ever seen anywhere else, there is no light pollution in the area.
The location was great for us, it was about 20-25 minutes to downtown Kona and only 4 minutes to amazing snorkeling at Honaunau Bay.
We feel like we got to experience authentic Hawaii life because we stayed here. Highly recommended.

  • Very clean and comfortable habitation in a quiet and secure environment. It is located close to the beach (5 minutes’ drive) of Captain Cook (interesting for snorkeling) and less than 30 minutes for the more active town of Kona. Highly recommended.

Si vous voulez éviter l'activité tapageuse de Kona et optez plutôt pour le calme, c'est une adresse intéressante. Les propriétaires sont gentils et très discrets.

  • We only met Randy & Ruth during our stay at Lani Kai and not Mandi, though most email communication was through her. She was very responsive prior to our stay and less so after we arrived. Randy and Ruth were both very gracious, welcoming and helpful. The cottage has its charm and while there was no air conditioning, it was never unbearable as long as we had the fan on. It was comfortable for the three of us to stay in and it would have overall been a good experience had we not had an issue with fleas. Mandi offered us a partial refund after some emailing back and forth via a check that would be mailed to me. However, it's been over two weeks and I still have not received anything in the mail nor any reply when I emailed to inquire about it. I admit that these fleas might very well be a fluke incident. In the end, it's more about how the proprietors handled this situation than the fleas themselves, though those bites were insanely itchy. I would normally give more time before leaving a review to see how the situation is resolved, but airbnb only allows for a 30-day window.

    Response from Lani Kai Gardens:

We take great pride and invest a great deal of time into the cleanliness of
our cottages--which does include the appropriate routine maintenance to
keep our spaces free of pests. We do, after all, live in the tropics! We
inspected and treated the cottage for Sunny during an agreed-upon time in
which she and her friends would not be home and still were questioned as to
whether or not we had done anything while they were out. We always have and
continue to check between guests and still have never seen any evidence of
fleas or any other similar issues. We feel as though, in light of our
commitment to address the situation in a way that did not hinder their
vacation--and in light of the partial refund we issued, we had done
everything in our power to help Sunny and her friends enjoy their stay in
Hawaii. As you can see by our reviews we do strive to provide a peaceful
(and private) getaway and one of us is always available to answer questions
and help make your stay more enjoyable in any way we can!

  • Beautiful location and very friendly and accommodating hosts. I would recommend and stay here again.

  • A lovely roomy cottage in a beautiful setting. The many windows and large mirrors make the cottage very light and airy. We enjoyed walking around the grounds seeing lots of interesting plants and even some animals (besides the friendly cats). It was very convenient to some good snorkeling spots.

  • We had a great time staying at Lani Kai Gardens, and can definitely recommend it! Mandi and her family are very friendly, helpful and flexible. The cottage is both cute and practical but the best thing for us was the garden! Our 3-year-old loved to be able to get out in the morning to play, explore, and see the cats. The farm is beautiful, and we felt it is perfectly located if you want to explore a less touristy side of Big Island.

  • Mandi Rocks....We had a perfect stay. I really like being outside of Kona. Captain Cook and South Kona are some of my favorite spots in Hawaii. Mandi answered all my questions thoroughly and quickly. It was like staying at the family Hawaiian Hacienda. Can't wait to return.

  • Great cottage and owners! The place was airy, clean and had an amazing view from the bedroom. We would definitely return if given the chance. Mandi was courteous and helpful. The kittens are the friendliest kittens in the world we're sure and was the icing on the cake. A little piece of heaven indeed. Thanks Mandi!

My staying at the sunset view cottage was a wonderful experience! A magical trip! I felt like I was home. The cottage's interior was perfect as the whole property : clean and comfortable with a beautiful view of the ocean and perfect sunset. The smelling of the jasmin flowers, the singing koki (tree frogs) every night and the loveable 3 cats! I will miss all those things! The owner Mandi and her parents Randy and Ruth were very helpful and I would like to have a special thanks to Mandi to have make a trade with me: reduced rate in exchange for a few of my paintings completed during my visit! It was a wonderful experience for me!I will definitely be back! (my apologizes about my english)
Thank you Mandi & family! Mahalo! Suzanne

My name is Mandi, and I am a part of the team that lives and works here at Lani Kai Farm and Gardens. Together with my husband, Chad, and my parents, Randy and Ruth. we started Lani Kai Gardens in an effort to simplify our lives, combining our talents and time to living closer to the land and enjoying and caring for this amazing piece of paradise. When we found this property in 2010 we could see its beauty and potential but it needed help. The farm had not been worked in many years and the cottages had not been updated in some time. We have since cleaned up the orchards, returned the farm to a good working order and begun working toward adding to and diversifying our crop selection. We have also thoroughly renovated and updated three cottages which we now rent as vacation rentals. Through all of our renovations both in the cottages and on the farm we have focused on using renewable, sustainable materials whenever possible. In 2012 we were fortunate to be able to add a very large solar installation that has enabled us to generate more than 70% of the electricity we use and are working on plans to supplement with small scale solar hot water projects. Our location offers us and our guests a more authentic stay on a beautiful island rich with history and culture. We offer a lush tropical setting that is quiet and peaceful, encouraging a deeper connection to your surroundings and the ability to truly connect with the land. Our property overlooks Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Site and Kealakekua Bay--close to "Two-Step" and the Captain Cook Monument and the best snorkeling on the island. We have two gray sand beaches close by, one with a quiet cove and keiki pond perfect for little ones. We can see the whales in the winter and spring and have spinner dolphins in the bay that come to visit the snorkelers in the early morning hours. We are also closer to Volcanoes National Park, Black Sand Beach at Punalu'u and Green Sand Beach. some of the "must-see" sites for visitors. We are always here to help in planning and to answer any questions you may have. We were once travelers here ourselves and are ready to help you make the most of your Hawaiian getaway!
