About This Listing
The Sunset Cottage is a perfect spot for a romantic getaway or an adventure tour of the Big Island. Surrounded by lush tropical grounds, our cottage is located on a 10 acre Mac Nut and Avocado Farm overlooking Honaunau and Kealakekua Bay. E komo mai!
You will fall in love with this spacious and sunny Ohana just minutes from snorkeling and South Kona beaches. Lovingly restored, this cottage features a 180 degree view surrounded by lush tropical flowers and looking out on an unforgettable sunset view.
We promise you will love this amazing bedroom with its picture windows looking out on lush tropical flowers and trees--it feels like you are in your own private Swiss Family Robinson but without sacrificing on amenities. The windows look out on acres of tropical flowers and fruits like mangos, papayas and plumeria.
The bedroom has a queen bed and separate sitting room that is perfect for curling up and reading about the fascinating history of this ancient part of the Big Island and its historic settlement by Captain Cook. In the distance is Kealakekua Bay, site of James Cook's first encounter with the people of Hawaii and later the place where he met his end. It is said that the bay is protected by the spirits of the alii, or chiefs, that led this proud nation prior to the arrival of the missionaries after Cook's discovery.
The bath in this cottage was practically built for royalty--it features a large jetted tub -and marble surround as well as a separate shower and dressing area. The tub peeks into the bedroom and out onto the property through two windows that allow for tons of natural light and a great cross-breeze on tradewind evenings.
The kitchenette is outfitted with a refrigerator, convection oven, two-burner hot plate, toaster, coffee maker, blender and microwave as well as a bar for two. The living room has a pullout couch that can provide additional sleeping space as well as a flat panel TV. The entire property features free wifi and additional services such as a dvd player are available upon request.
We are a quick five minute drive from the famed "two-step" for the best snorkeling the island has to offer. If you get down there bright and early you may be lucky enough to swim with the pod of dolphins that call these amazing beaches their home. Beach chairs and towels are available with the cottage.
The owners are onsite and we are always happy to help you plan or make recommendations so that you can make the most of your stay on the island. We offer free farm tours and provide a seasonal basket of our farm-fresh produce to help make your stay unique and special. We would be honored to have you as our guests and do everything we can to help make your trip to Hawaii the trip of a lifetime!
The cottage overlooks the Macadamia Nut Orchard and guests are free to enjoy the spacious grounds. There is a private outdoor eating area with a gas grill and convenient parking. The shared washer and dryer is located near the shop space.
Interaction with Guests
While we live onsite we do prefer to give you your space and privacy to enjoy your vacation getaway. We are always happy to answer questions and give you a tour of the farm (with advance notification).
We are located in the heart of the Kona coffee belt in historic Captain Cook, just outside of Kailua Kona. Our grounds overlook Pu'uhonua o Honaunau and the famed Two-Step. Centrally located for day trips to Volcanoes National Park, Green Sand Beach and Hilo, we are still close enough to Kona to enjoy the restaurants, shopping and nightlife. Captain Cook and the surrounding neighborhoods will give you a more authentic Hawaiian experience without skimping on luxury and convenience.
While there is a bus its schedule is limited. We strongly encourage all of our guests rent a vehicle to enjoy all the Big Island has to offer.
Quiet hours are 10pm-8am daily. We encourage you to make yourselves at home! Please bring your own laundry detergent for the onsite washer and dryer. We provide dish soap for the kitchen as well as an earth-friendly cleaner for light cleaning during your stay. You are not required to remove linens or clean upon departure, however, we do ask that you simply wash any dirty dishes so that we can put them away when we come in to clean.
We are very flexible with special requests and encourage you to ask if you have any questions or need anything that is not provided for you.
This is a little piece of paradise! We had stayed in a hotel on our last visit in 2012 and this time wanted to have a 'live here' experience. Randy and Mandi greeted us on arrival, with some fresh avacados, macadamia nuts, limes and oranges from their farm. The place is exactly as described, very private and had everything we needed.
We were able to use this as our central location as we travelled the island, and to prepare and cook most of our own meals, although no stove there is a great BBQ which met all our needs!
There is no A/C and we did not feel it was needed, there was always a breese, and being at a higher elevation keep the tempature comfortable, and the fan was all that we needed.
The sunsets are spectacular, you will need your camera. Great snorkelling beach at Honaunau which is 5 minutes away.
Thank you for a wonderful stay!

This is a great space on a beautiful property - a big farm that overlooks the ocean. Ruth and Randy were around when we arrived to help us get settled in. The place itself had all the amenities we could want for our three-night stay and it was quiet and comfortable. It's Hawaii, so don't be surprised if a couple of bugs and lizards find their way in. We enjoyed the space and the nice walk around the grounds.
Lani Kai Gardens is a lovely property with beautiful trees and flowers. It is conveniently located just a few miles from the excellent snorkeling at Two-Step, which we visited multiple times. It is about 10 minutes from Choice-Mart where we bought delicious local fish to cook on the gas grill. Our hosts Randy and Ruth were welcoming and very responsive to any requests or queries we had.
I loved my stay at Lani Kai gardens. The cottage is lovely--with excellent light and a beautiful wall of windows--direct view of the Pacific. I enjoyed beautiful pink sunsets every single night!! The location is great--about 5 minutes from a little country store, 10 minutes from a proper super market, and 15 minutes from one of the best snorkeling spots in all of Hawaii (Two Step). It is very peaceful on the land--I especially loved the avocado grove, colorful heliconia flowers, and the many beautiful birdsongs. Aloha!

About the Host, Lani Kai Gardens
My name is Mandi, and I am a part of the team that lives and works here at Lani Kai Farm and Gardens. Together with my husband, Chad, and my parents, Randy and Ruth. we started Lani Kai Gardens in an effort to simplify our lives, combining our talents and time to living closer to the land and enjoying and caring for this amazing piece of paradise.
When we found this property in 2010 we could see its beauty and potential but it needed help. The farm had not been worked in many years and the cottages had not been updated in some time. We have since cleaned up the orchards, returned the farm to a good working order and begun working toward adding to and diversifying our crop selection. We have also thoroughly renovated and updated three cottages which we now rent as vacation rentals.
Through all of our renovations both in the cottages and on the farm we have focused on using renewable, sustainable materials whenever possible. In 2012 we were fortunate to be able to add a very large solar installation that has enabled us to generate more than 70% of the electricity we use and are working on plans to supplement with small scale solar hot water projects.
Our location offers us and our guests a more authentic stay on a beautiful island rich with history and culture. We offer a lush tropical setting that is quiet and peaceful, encouraging a deeper connection to your surroundings and the ability to truly connect with the land. Our property overlooks Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Site and Kealakekua Bay--close to "Two-Step" and the Captain Cook Monument and the best snorkeling on the island. We have two gray sand beaches close by, one with a quiet cove and keiki pond perfect for little ones. We can see the whales in the winter and spring and have spinner dolphins in the bay that come to visit the snorkelers in the early morning hours.
We are also closer to Volcanoes National Park, Black Sand Beach at Punalu'u and Green Sand Beach. some of the "must-see" sites for visitors.
We are always here to help in planning and to answer any questions you may have. We were once travelers here ourselves and are ready to help you make the most of your Hawaiian getaway!

Their prices may not be the lowest in town, but the fish is the freshest and is caught locally. Try the Big Island Beef (melt-in-your-mouth) and dont forget the musubi. Sushi at the deli is good too!96704
