This was Todji's sculpture studio & he designed & built the Magic Barn for you.

The space
Welcome to the Magic Barn, located in the heart and hub of the Richmond district of Southeast Portland.

Good people of all colors and orientations are welcome. Love for all creation is practiced here.

The Magic Barn is located 15 minutes to the Airport, 10 minutes to Downtown, 10 minutes to the Convention Center, and a short walk to the Hawthorne Theater. Rental bikes are within 3 blocks and there is ample free street parking.

Your host Todji is an artist, enjoy his sculptures & art collection. Todji personally restored the entire Magic House and Barn over 25 years. Most of the sculptures in the garden were sculpted right here, enjoy!

Hobie is your onsite host, a novelist and professional writer. He is available to assist during your stay, and to respect privacy.

This is not a real estate investor style rental unit. We are artists, we employ community artists, and we hope to offer an artistic cultural experience.

The kitchen has all the basics for cooking, with fridge/freezer, hot water heater, coffee and tea to get you going in the morning. New Season health food market is three blocks away, and Fred Meyer supermarket is 2 blocks away. Trinket breakfast cafe is one block away, turn right when walking out the driveway.

Complimentary baby amenities are available upon request: Portable crib, baby bath and high chair.

"HOT TUB IS FOR 1 PERSON"

We have listed the claw foot tub as a "1 Person Hot Tub" on Airbnb to help hot bath people find us. Enjoy!

If you can't book right now, please save the Magic Barn to your wish list so you can find us later : )

FOR LARGE GROUPS:

The Magic House is available to be booked separately in conjunction with the Magic Barn for large groups. The Magic House has 4 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. You can find the listing by searching for "The Magic House Portland". Inquiries and referrals are welcome.

MAGIC STORY:

When Todji first moved into the main house as a renter, the Magic Barn was a twisted old shed with broken windows, no electricity or heat and it was filled with trash. Todji transformed it into his sculpture studio, and then purchased the house in 2004 when banks were giving loans to anyone, including self-employed artists! Todji rented rooms to other artists while restoring the old house and building a career as a fine art sculptor between 2000 and 2017.

Todji designed and built the Magic Barn. The interior wood siding is salvaged old growth barn planks, and the ceiling is made of the original 1936 rafters and sheathing. Look at the outside walls to see the twist in the structure!

Todji produces public art bronze sculpture monuments for US cities which you may already have seen, or that you may see one day. Enjoy the rotating sculpture collection! The sculptures travel to different exhibitions.

Patronage from guests such as yourself is part of what helps Todji continue to work as an artist, and for this he is deeply grateful!

Thank you for reading our story, we hope to host you at the Magic Barn!

Guest access
Outside space is shared with other guests, your hosts, and maintenance workers. Please exchange friendly hellos, make friends and respect privacy.

Other things to note
We are very centrally located, and along with that convenience comes visible and audible street traffic, we are located off a fairly busy four lane street.

The Magic Barn is very well insulated, so it is sufficiently quiet for nearly all our guests. Previous guests have written in reviews that the Magic Barn is "quiet", "serene", and “tranquil".

The bathroom doors have decorative glass and there are two very high windows that are open to the main space. If you are visually and audibly very modest please take a look at the photos of the bathroom before booking.

Five Star Location: Because The Magic House is on a busy four lane street, our neighbors do not notice our guests coming and going. Neighbors were chronically disturbed by an Airbnb on a nearby, quiet residential street. Our guests can feel 100% welcome knowing that they are not disturbing our neighbors, and locally owned businesses appreciate your patronage, just as we do!

Please let us know in advance if you want us to prepare an additional floor air mattress for $40.

If you have booked for someone else, please inform us, and send us a photo of their ID through Airbnb messages. Please note that you are responsible for any damages by your guest.

We do not issue refunds that are outside of Airbnb's refund policies.

We have a short term rental permit from the city of Portland which requires the following from our guests:

"You must keep and maintain a guest log book. Record the names and home addresses of guests, guest’s license plate numbers if traveling by car, dates of stay and the room assigned to each guest.'"

Please write the above information in our guest book when you arrive as required by the city of Portland.

We hope to host you at the Magic Barn, thank you!

Neighborhood highlights

The Magic Barn is centrally located in one of the most charming and hip neighborhoods in Portland.

With the center of both SE Hawthorne and SE Division St within 3 blocks, there is an abundance of restaurants, boutique browsing, grocery stores, neighborhood strolling, and park hiking options within walking distance.

See a movie, or just step in to witness the beautiful and iconic McMenamin's Bagdad theater, accompanied by an incredible restaurant/bar/pool hall in the back called the "Back Stage Bar", at SE 37th and Hawthorne. It will give you a feel for classic Portland!

We are minutes from Mt Tabor park which has a lovely forest with walking trails sitting upon a dormant volcano, and we are 45 minutes to the spectacular 600 foot tall Multnomah waterfall in the gorgeous Columbia River Gorge scenic area.

Division is the new up and coming Southeast neighborhood. With lots of modern architecture, new restaurants and shops you will get a feel for the freshest vibe Portland has to offer.

Here is a list to get you started:

Restaurants:

(The options are endless but here are a few popular favorites!)

Serving Food Late - Sapphire Hotel at 50th and Hawthorne, Romantic and sexy atmosphere- great for late night drinks and gourmet bar food.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters- 45th and Division, Classic Great Portland Coffee

Trinket- One block away on Lincoln and 39th, great for Brunch with their locally sourced eggs!) Harlow- 36th and Hawthorne, Hip and Healthy, great for lunch, or fresh veggie juice.

Por Que No- 46th and Hawthorne, Wildly popular Mexican with a great playful decor. (Don’t be intimidated by the line, you order at the counter, and then get a seat and your order will be out in no time)

Pok Pok- 32nd and Division, There are literally 11 Thai restaurants in walking distance, but Pok Pok is the best. Began as a food cart, but grew into a Restaurant Empire. Worth the wait.

Bollywood Theater- 30th and Division, Indian food small plates. Also along line but worth it! Salt and Straw- 33rd and Division, Food Networks top five ice creams! Super Popular!

Lauretta Jeans- 34th and Division, Breathtaking Pies! Tidbit Food Cart Pod, 28th and Division, Fabulous food cart selection, lots of seating, including a beer garden and vintage clothing bus. A truly Portland experience.

Hiking: The website of "Friends of the Columbia Gorge" has detailed information about many hikes in the scenic and nearby Columbia River Gorge. It is a 45 minute drive from here to enter the gorge. Below are the names of hikes that we love and recommend. Check the website to find a hike with a distance and fitness level that suits you. For those who are visiting the gorge for the first time, I recommend visiting the most spectacular, and also the most touristicated, 600 foot Multnomah Falls. For those who want a challenging half day hike you can begin at Multnomah Falls and hike a loop called the Franklin Ridge Loop. Multnomah Falls /Franklin Ridge Loop Eagle Creek Angels Rest Bridal Veil Falls Triple Falls Wahkeena Falls

Groceries, Pharmacy and Shopping:

New Seasons- Local Health Food Store (40th and Hawthorne)
Fred Meyers- Local Department/Grocery store (Cesar Chavez and Hawthorne)
Rite Aid Pharmacy- Drugstore/pharmacy (Cesar Chavez and Division)
Powell’s Books- A smaller version of Portland’s famous Bookstore (37th and Hawthorne)
Gold Door- Wonderful Imports from around the world (37th and Hawthorne)

Enjoy!
