The Space

Calais Cottage is located in a safe, quiet neighborhood. The vintage cottage built in 1947 is semi-detached, situated close to the water with a view and a pool. It is a very private, gated property. Calais Cottage has it’s own private entrance for the guests and there is no sharing of any interior spaces with others. Only one group of guests at a time can book here. The cottage is tucked away from the street and just steps away from a private pool, private hot tub, and a wide, waterfront canal teeming with wildlife. There are two patios, one with a small fountain and it’s own dock for your boat or a rental boat. You must really like and appreciate nature to rent this rustic cottage set in a tropical garden in an urban environment. The cottage is surrounded by tropical fruit trees and exotic plants, so you might see insects and other creatures around the garden during your stay. You may also see parrots, blue & white herons, ospreys, pelicans, ibis, iguanas, manatee, tarpon and an occasional dolphin all from this location. The cottage comes with a private parking space behind gates, a full size pool to use, a hot tub near the pool and a large, waterfront private dock with a gas barbecue to cook outside. There is a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, microwave, stove and appliances, There is high speed Wi-Fi internet access, an
I-pod dock for your music and a printer /scanner to print your boarding pass. There is a spacious dining room/living room with a large dining table, 2 sofas and a futon/couch that serves as an extra full sized bed. The cottage features one bathroom with a shower and a quiet, restful bedroom with a view and a large, comfortable king size bed, The bedroom has a big, brand-new, flat screen television with many DVDs & movies to watch. The property is very close to beautiful beaches, several parks, a 18 hole golf course and a pedestrian, oceanfront boardwalk. You can walk or drive to interesting local restaurants including seafood, Italian, Brazilian Japanese, Thai, and an Argentinian steak house. There are grocery stores very close by that cater to all you might need and a Saturday farmer's market. There are rental bikes in the neighborhood. Enjoy this quiet paradise while being only 20 minutes by car, taxi or bus from South Beach, Wynwood or the Design District for the nightlife, beaches, shopping, art galleries, the Miami airport and more. The Everglades (Shark Valley) is an hour away and the start of the Florida Keys is just 90 minutes south.

  • We stayed at the cottage beginning of April and had a wonderful time.
It was even prettier and cozier than we expected.

The house is fully equipped, the swimming pool cleaned everyday and the tropical garden strongly adds to the experience.
We really enjoyed taking our breakfast on the terrace, have a swim and lunch by the canal.

The North Park Beach is not so far (went there by car though lazy as we were) and we had it almost to ourselves.

If you feel like cooking, there are small grocery stores in the neighborhood with everything from meat to vegetables and larger supermarkets not far from the beach.
If not, there are also restaurants.

Last but not least, Peter was a charming host, who took the time to provide advices, show us around his botanical garden and chit-chat with us from time to time.
We would definitely recommend the place !

  • My husband and I had a lovely stay at the Waterfront Cottage Tropical Garden. Peter was a very conscientious host and ensured that our stay was as comfortable as possible. We made good use of pool, hot tub and outdoor area. We even took kayak for a tour of the canal.

Not looking for the typical touristy Miami experience we were very contented with the surrounding neighborhood, the local restaurants (that Peter specifically recommended) and nearby beaches. We really couldn't have asked for more. We only hope to return again!

  • We had an amazing time at Peter and Gina's place for our end of the year family trip. We have two 11 y.o. boys so we needed a comfortable place that was laid back and with space for them to run and hang out, we were lucky to get to know these very interesting couple. The place is not fancy but very clean and comfortable for the lovers of nature. They are very friendly, laid back, very interesting, helpful with all we needed; I am glad we got to know them. Their cottage is attached to the back cottage they rent out which faces the water canal; so they were handy when we needed them. They helped us with the grill, to prepare the kayak and other related stuff. The pool is not heated and the days were not too warm so we couldn't really use it, but its a cool pool otherwise, and the jacuzzi was just in process of being replaced for a new one that very week so we couldn't use it either, but we had an amazing time in any case kayaking in the beautiful and quiet canal, doing bbq and relaxing reading by the pool. The place is about 20 min drive from South Beach and also downtown. Close to restaurants and market, five min drive from the house by Collins Av and 79th St area. The house is a very quiet tropical secret paradise; for us New Yorkers we felt like we were so far remote in the tropics or the Caribbean at this house that we didn't want to go out that much into the highway jungle of Miami. Thank you guys for the great experience.

Thank you and sorry about the hot tub because the new and improved hot tub was installed the day after you left - so next time...

  • We spent three really gourgeous days in Miami Beach at the lovely Waterfront Cottage. The place is a quiet little paradise in the big, colourful city of Miami. There is plenty of room for two people, and we especially liked our private pool and the jacuzzi. The house and the garden are tastefully decorated, and we felt "at home" from the first minute - but most important: Peter and Gina are wonderful hosts. From our arrival late in the night until our departure they made our holiday simply perfect. And, yes, this was the first time we got homegrown bananas for breakfast! We will take any chance to come here again and we highly recommend this place.

Julia & Franz (absolutely delighted :o)

  • Our stay at the waterfront cottage was exactly what we hoped to find! The place is a small paradise, hidden secretly behind plants. Being in this cultivated nature was a delight for us. Peter and Gina were very friendly and right from the beginning we felt at home. The inside of the cottage is not fancy, thats right, but is has a lot of soul in each detail. We loved to be there and wish, we can come back some day....Thanks to Peter and Gina!!

It was a wonderful stay at your cottage. We enjoyed the quiet and cosy garden. It is a special place you have. So close to Miami Beach and also a perfect refuge. You were really helpful and discreet. For all persons looking for a place with a likeable neighborhood, that's the right place. We'll be back for sure!

Freelance and retired
We are a family of artists living between Miami Beach and Los Angeles. Gina is a retired educator who paints. Peter is semi-retired and loves organic gardening. Emmy works as a freelance art director. We enjoy art, yoga and have traveled the world. When you see the premises you will see that we are a quiet family that loves nature and the outdoors. We are not fancy. The cottage we designed is artsy and down to earth. Peter is usually on the premises maintaining the organic, tropical garden and harvesting papaya, bananas, passion fruit and mangos. We know Miami Beach and the locale very well and feel we can answer any questions about the area that you might have and point you to the special places and away from tourists traps.
