Since meeting an amazing and wonderful man, I've stopped living in this space and turned it into my studio. I de-cluttered, re-decorated and re-discovered a warm, inviting and artsy space. Since I am not sleeping here, why don't you? Brimming with trinkets and treasures, I have lined the walls with sketches, postcards and bits of ephemera. My hope is that the space will both inspire and welcome travelers to this magical city.
Hidden on a tree-lined side street, the four-story pre-war building features a funky pastel pink portico and is located in the colorful and historic Edgewater neighborhood - once the playground of the wealthy, it is now one of the most dense and diverse areas in the country! Just two blocks from the beach and well-connected to the rest of the city, the area is known for it's lively atmosphere.
My apartment is on the 4th floor. No elevator, sorry. The rooms have high ceilings and large East-facing windows. Just a quick bus-ride away from downtown Chicago and easily accessibly by train, as there's a Red Line stop 2 blocks away. Andersonville is a mere 10 minute walk away, as are restaurants representing every corner of the globe. Mexican, American, Thai, Japanese and Indian on just my block alone. Also - the best board game store for the nerds.
The studio is equipped with a queen-size bed with cozy, 100% cotton sheets. Plenty of blankets for the chilly weather - but the space heats pretty well. Basic toiletries and meticulous housekeeping are included. Being Russian, the space is well-stocked with tea. There is an air mattress available for a third person. Guests are welcome to cook & eat at the folding dining table or use table as work station. Closet for hanging clothes. Iron/Ironing board available as well.
An updated note about internet (as of 3.1) There is no internet, aside from my neighbors' unsecured wifi connection, which is slow but reliable. Since you're travelling, I'd think you're better off sight seeing than watching cat videos. I have tried loaning my tenants an internet hotspot in Feb but ended up with a $400 fee. You're really better off going to a coffee shop, which are noted in my guidebook
Parking, which is a rarity in Chicago, is plentiful in the neighborhood, although I suggest to leave the car parked, or not rent a car. Andersonville, Wrigley/Sox, Wicker Park, Logan Square, Hyde Park, Downtown/Loop, etc are easily accessible - the area offers a multitude of transit options, including express buses within a hundred feet and the 24/7 Red Line.
The building is on a side street and is quiet, aside from general noise in the hallway. If you are a light sleeper you may want to wear earplugs. In the two years I've lived here, I found the area to be very safe.
Smoking is not allowed in the studio & will incur a fine. Me being Russian, there is plenty of tea for guests.
Directions, suggestions and strong opinions offered freely to all guests. Just ask!
Guests have full access to the studio and it's amenities.
I meet most of my tenants to hand them the keys. The guests can leave the keys in the apartment for me to pick up later.
Edgewater is historic, diverse and charming. With the lake and the subway a block away, it's an exceptionally well-connected area of the city.
There are many diverse shops and restaurants. Don't miss the Vietnamese stores on Argyle and the vibrant commercial strip of Andersonville, 4 blocks west on Clark St. Also Little India is a little north and west as well for the truly adventurous.
The Bryn Mawr EL stop is one block away. The 147 express bus runs on Sheridan and whisks you to downtown in 20 minutes.
The Peterson, Sheridan (151) and Broadway (36) buses are also nearby to take you all across the city

Vitaliy's apartment was perfect. It's clean and V made it a point to make sure you have everything you need, he has guides to the neighborhood, maps and other attractions. He also has a spare inflatable bed in case it's needed. The apartment is in a good neighborhood, you feel safe walking at night and provides easy access to both buses and the train. Thank you Vitaliy for the hospitality and we enjoyed Chicago
V's home was fantastic, warm and cosy. He was happy to meet us when ever we got there and gave some great food tips! He also had plenty of Maps and Food guides to the city and surrounding areas. His home is close to the Red line Train system which made it easy to get around. Would defiantly stay again next time I'm back in Chicago!
The location is great. I did find parking a few blocks away on a Sunday afternoon so that wasn't so bad. Vitaliy is a cheerful guy and a good host. As other reviews mentioned the wall or door between the room and the hallway is very thin so noise comes through easily. However the other tenants are all very quiet and considerate and appear to be nice reasonable people when we said hello to them occasionally. The building as a whole was fairly quiet. (We stayed Sunday night and Monday night.)
Had a great time in Chicago! The place was spotless and Vitaliy was a great host. Would definitely stay here again when we get back to Chicago.
It was a wonderful stay. Vitaliy is sweet & super helpful with directions on how to navigate through the city. He's very knowledgeable on some really good places to go. The place is safe, quite, nice & very close to public transportation. There's no tv which I think is great it provoked motivation to actually get out & go places plus get real sleep w/o being preoccupied by what show we might miss. It has plenty of dining options within walking distance. Next time I'll remember to pack light as there are a few stairs lol but overall we had a great
What a great place to stay in Chicago. Vitaliy made this part of our visit effortless. We knew he was there if we needed anything at all. His enthusiasm for the city is contagious. We arrived home each night exhausted from another fabulous day and fell fast asleep in the cosy bed. We never had to worry about a thing. It was quiet and safe. I did feel the need to do a bit of sprucing up in the appt just for my own comfort. My husband felt it was quite fine. I loved the ambiance created by all of the artwork in the appt. We hope to stay here again as we didn't get to see all we wanted to see and our daughter has a graduation coming up so we have the perfect excuse to return!
Thanks so much for the kind words, Debby. I am thrilled your stay went as well as it did, and it was so nice meeting your lovely daughter. I have lots of cute ideas for sprucing up the place - I'm just waiting for warmer weather, so if you do come back, it might look totally different! :)
Very communicative during the booking and very helpful and pleasant when getting the key. Cute place in great location. Thank you!
Vitaliy provided a perfect place for my partner and I to stay while visiting Chicago. The studio was conveniently located, well kept, and Vitaliy provided those items that are incredibly annoying to travel with (e.g., toothpaste, shampoo, and towels). After long days visiting with friends, the studio was a comfortable and quiet place to return for a few hours of shuteye before heading out again in the morning. On top of all that, Vitaliy was incredibly flexible with our ever-changing ETA. We would stay in Vitaliy's studio again in a heartbeat.
Vitaliy is super nice.
The place is right near the lake, and a street with good restaurants.
Our stay at Vitaliy's was excellent! He is a very caring and accommodating host, who really goes out of his way to make sure his guests have a great time in Chicago! The apartment is perfect, location is convenient, and I highly recommend him/his apartment! Thank you, Vitaliy!
