About This Listing
Stunning 5-room arts and crafts B&B on lake Mendota in downtown Madison. Numerous quality restaurants nearby. Enjoy free parking, wifi and a healthy continental breakfast to start your day.
"Whoever you are: I have always depended on the kindness of strangers," (Blanche Dubois.) I named this room after my favorite playwright, Tennessee Williams. And you can count on us to be kind! This 1911 arts and crafts house recently opened as a bed and breakfast known as The Mendota Lake House B&B. You simply cannot beat the location - inside a park, on the lake, in downtown Madison. Walk to the farmer's market on the Capitol square, or take a hike to campus just 1 mile away -- closer if you are a good swimmer!
The Tennessee Williams room is very cozy with a queen bed and your own private balcony with views to the front and the lake out back. The large tiled bath features a whirlpool tub and plush towels. I have a two night minimum requirement for weekend bookings.
The house has 5 guest rooms each with en suite bath. Each room has it's own lock and key. Bob and I have our own private apartment in the lower level so guests enjoy the full use of the first floor of this stunning 1911 prairie style home. This includes a full kitchen and 2400 sq. feet of area to lounge.
If you prefer to eat out, we have excellent restaurants very nearby.
We live with 3 Labrador retrievers: Coco, Ada and Arnie. We all live in the private lower level of the house. They love visitors so you are always welcome to take them for a walk in the park.
If you will be taking the bus while in town, the bus stops right out front. If you prefer to bike, there is a B-Cycle kiosk located down the street in the park. If you are bringing a car, you can park in the small lot behind our house.
If you are looking for cheap eats, we can point you in the right direction. If you are looking for restaurants that cater to vegetarians (like Bob) we know where to go. Want to know more about Madison -- we've been here for 30 years!
We are looking forward to meeting you.
Note, short stays include a continental breakfast. For longer stays, we invite you to use the first floor kitchen.
Other Things to Note
Note, because we are a bed and breakfast with a separate reservation system, our calendar on this site may be out of date. Also, the house is not child proofed. Please enquire if you wish to bring young children.
Unfortunately we cannot accept pets. We have 3 Labrador retrievers living with us in our private quarters. I have a 2 night minimum on weekends.

A David e Bob un grazie di cuore e arrivederci a presto!!!
I enjoyed meeting and talking to David and Bob very much. Both are hard working very interesting men who love their property. I adore the house, space and light through out the interior. My room, The Tennessee Williams room is accommodating with a large bath and nice shower. It is on the front of the house which is a bit noisy at night especially with windows open but I use ear plugs and take a Benadryl so I was fine. I loved staying here and hope to come back someday. The location is perfect for downtown dining and sight seeing...a wonderful pedestrian path runs along the lake in front of the house. Watch the splendid sunset over Lake Mendota right from a chair behind the house. I will recommend this charming place and will come back again some day. Many thanks David and Bob for a very nice stay.
Staying with David and Bob was fantastic! I stayed at their lovely home while relocating to Chicago. It gave me a comfortable home to come back to while exploring Madison, starting a new job, and before moving into my apartment. They were extremely friendly and accommodating.
My room was wonderfully clean and comfortable and I slept very well every night. The home also has beautiful common areas to hang out in, a great kitchen, and views of the lake. Also, restaurants and the capital building are very walkable. Thank you David & Bob!
Wonderful location, gracious hosts. David and Bob recommended a bike rental only a half-mile WALK away from their home that rents Trek hybrids with comfy seats for 24 HRS for ONLY TWENTY dollars a day !! Locks, helmets, and flexibility on return time, (what u had it for 25 not 24 hrs? no problem!), included.
Plus, our hosts' dinner recommendation, only a BLOCK away from their home, was greatly appreciated. Great food, awesome cocktails and no worries about who gets stuck with being the designated driver!
Our stay in Bob & David's lake house was very comfortable, and felt like a very good value. The location overlooking Lake Mendota was stunning when we arrived late in the afternoon, and the expert landscaping the couple has done only enhances the aesthetics of the exterior. Because the house is located in a very walkable and bike-able city, we were able to leave our car parked for our two-day visit, and were able to walk, bike, and bus everywhere we wanted to go. While drinking tea and listening to soft jazz in the communal living room late the first night, I had the opportunity to read the owners' detailed story of the negotiations involved in acquiring the house from the City of Madison. The next morning, we had a few minutes to talk with Bob about their ongoing, long-term renovation/restoration plans for a truly historic and architecturally significant house (which for a number of years had been shuttered and unused).
The continental breakfast was quite satisfying — and Bob's homemade granola was particularly good. All the rooms of the house were occupied consistently during our visit, but it was never crowded or loud. Bob and David also provided excellent suggestions for eating and shopping locally.
This stay was a complete pleasure from start to finish. Dave and Bob were incredibly friendly and easy to communicate with and checking in and out were very simple. Their house is a delightful older building with lots of character and it is well furnished with lots of areas to hang out, My room was terrific. It was very clean, with a comfortable bed and its own bathroom. Dave and Bob also supplied a simple breakfast each morning, which was very welcome. The house is located about 1/2 mile from Downtown Madison and on the edge of Lake Mendota with its walking paths and beautiful views. I had a great week in the city and at the BnB. Highly recommended.

About the Host, David & Bob
Hi there, I'm embarking on a new venture in my life -- innkeeping! My husband and I purchased a prairie style mansion on lake Mendota in downtown Madison. I love architecture and I am both thrilled and humbled to own this stunning home. The house was built in the prairie school style made famous by architects Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. My passion is gardening and I have about 1/3 acre right on the lake to keep me occupied. I love the idea of AirBnB because it embodies what I like best about travel -- staying someplace that is homey and comfortable -- the exact opposite of most hotels. You also have the added benefit of built in tour guides. Bob and I have lived in Madison for more than 30 years and we have a lot of information to share.
