Unplug and unwind at this secluded one-room retreat tucked along Thompson Creek on the historic 1,400-acre Sunfire Ranch. Set nearly a mile off Route 133 and surrounded by untouched wilderness, this private hideaway invites you to hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski in every direction. Relax in total peace and privacy by the stream, warm up by the cozy gas fire, or retreat to the spacious sleeping loft. This cabin is a true hidden gem of the Crystal Valley.
The space
The Cabin at Sunfire Ranch is located at the end of a dirt road about a half mile up-valley from the main ranch buildings. It is seated on the Thompson Creek, surrounded by a large mowed grass meadow, huge pine trees and amazing mountain views. Enjoy hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on miles of private single and double track trails right outside your door. The year-round Thompson creek is perfect for cooling off in the summer and is everyone’s favorite spot to sit quietly and listen to the water babble. The mowed meadow is great for outdoor play and games and there is a large stone patio with a grill and gas fire pit for lounging and dining.
The cabin sleeps 4 but during summer and fall months we allow up to 8 guests using either tents or RVs. The fee is $35 per additional guest.
The main ground floor area in the cabin is about 300 square feet with living, dining and kitchen areas, and a separate large pantry. The living area has a pull-out sleeper sofa with comfy pillows and blankets, coffee tables with books, two comfy chairs and a cozy gas fireplace.
The kitchen is equipped with a deep sink, 3 gas burners, a small refrigerator and plenty of counter space for food prep. There is no oven or microwave. It is well appointed with plates, bowls, glasses, mugs, utensils, mixing bowls, pots and pans, sharp knives, strainer, cutting board, tea kettle, french press, coffee, spices, and oil.
The dining area seats four very comfortably with seating for 6 available. The table easily and cleverly stows against the wall, revealing a dart board and open floor space for games or a blow-up mattress.
The generous sleeping loft is accessed by a retractable staircase/ladder which is not wheelchair accessible. The loft space IS NOT suitable nor safe for babies or toddlers. This cozy bedroom features a very comfy queen size bed with down duvet and flannel sheets, a window, reading lights, and ample storage for your clothing and gear.
*NOTES: The cabin does not have an indoor bathroom. There is a hot and cold water sink with mirror in the kitchen. About 25 steps from the cabin is a very clean and well lit outhouse (which does not emit odor). There is a year-round hot and cold water outdoor shower located on the far side of the cabin for which we provide robes, towels and sanitized Crocs.
There is no WiFi or cellular service in this remote area of the ranch. Guests may ask to access WiFi at the main ranch house if needed, however, the ranch house is a half mile from the cabin and the WiFi does not extend to cabin.
The cabin runs on solar power. Please anticipate conserving energy during the winter months if your visit coincides with snow storms and/or consecutive days with no sun. In an emergency, there is a generator we can fire up which is located about 75 feet from the cabin.
This is a working ranch/farm. There are dogs, livestock guardian dogs, barn cats, goats, chickens, cattle, and horses. The cabin is pretty far from the main ranch but there is always a chance that our dogs will wander up there or yours may wander down to us. We love welcoming other dogs, however, if yours are not dog/people friendly, or if there is a chance they'd be aggressive toward livestock, please do not bring them.
Guest access
For safety reasons, all guests are required to complete our ranch waiver. If you are responsible for other guests, please include an exhaustive list of all individuals, including contact information.
Fire season is active in Colorado now, and if, in an emergency, a staff member instructs you to evacuate, you must do so immediately.
Other things to note
There is an organic, sustainable farm on the ranch. Tours and farm to table dinners, served at the cabin or on our mesa, are available at an additional cost and with at least one week advanced booking (prior to your stay). In house massage available.
