The Space

Private entrance, single bedroom apartment on the first floor of our house with its own kitchen and bathroom, just steps from 24 hour bus-service to & from NYC.

Enjoy this colorful, quiet, private unit within our house. You'll rest comfortably in a queen size bed for 2 people, with room to relax in the living area with satellite TV on a sofa (that converts to a bed for 2 people). In addition, you'll have your own bathroom with a shower and your own kitchen/dining area with a small fridge, microwave and oven. When the weather's warm, enjoy breakfast on the patio in our yard. Need wi-fi access? We've got that too and free parking if you need it!

As many of our international guests have asked, yes, we do provide towels and sheets for you.

You'll be staying just 1/2 a block from stunning views of the NYC skyline, and 1 block from a bus stop for getting to and from the Times Square area of Manhattan in 15 minutes (we're 2 miles from the Lincoln Tunnel) for only a $3 bus fare. Buses run frequently, even late at night, so you needn't worry about schedules, due to our proximity to midtown.

The apartment is less than a 5 minute walk to a small, well-stocked supermarket and a number of restaurants. You can see more details in the Guidebook link on this listing.

We can't wait to have you join us and have a groovy NYC adventure!

Guest Access

Guests have private access to the entire apartment - your own bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and living area.

Interaction with Guests

As our guests stay in a private apartment within our house, it is really up to our guests how much they wish to interact with us. We live directly upstairs from the apartment and try to stop in and visit our guests once or twice during their visit, to ensure that all is going well and answer any questions. Our guests are invited to get in touch with us at any time during their visit.

We are always around when we have guests visiting.

The Neighborhood

We have a very quiet neighborhood that is perfect for relaxing before or after a long day in NYC.

The views of the Hudson River and the New York skyline cannot be beat!

For those of you with cars, free parking is available.

Everything you could possibly need during your stay is within walking distance of the apartment.

Getting around

You'll be staying just 1/2 a block from stunning views of the NYC skyline, and 1 block from a bus stop for getting to and from the Times Square area of Manhattan in 15 minutes (we're 2 miles from the Lincoln Tunnel which takes you into NYC) for only a $3 bus fare. • I stayed at Groovy Apartment for three nights in June 2014. Mark & Lori are a great host couple. They are very friendly, energetic, fun people. The house located in a nice and safe neigbourhood with everything you need in walking distance. It takes roughly 15-20 minutes to reach Times Square from this place by public transport but of course it depends on the traffic condition in the Lincoln Tunnel. Mark was kind enough to allow us to park our minivan at their driveway as there were no parking spots available.

The experience taking gypsy bus was great. It only costs $3 per person and drops us at Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Their house is clean and has a backyard where you can sit back and enjoy their greenery, a commodity which is rare if you stay in NYC hotels. Lori has excellent and well-manicured garden. It only half a block away from an amazing Manhattan skyline. If you have children, there is also a playground nearby. The groceries stores are nearby and we get some surprising discount at FreshCo just by showing the house key-tag.

This is my first time using AirBnb to find short-term accommodation in NYC and it was very convenient and better value almost as good as staying in a hotel.

  • The groovy apartment was an excellent choice to visit NYC!

Located in a quiet neighbourhood; with bus stop (2'), stores (2-3'), restaurants (2-3') and maybe the best Manhattan view! (1'); we had to stop by every morning and every night, just to sit in a bench and enjoy it... fantastic.
The longest we waited for the bus (in 7 days) was like 3', and the trip to Port Authority is fast if you avoid rush hours!

The apartment have everything we needed and much more. A large bed and a comfortable couch, complete kitchen and bath; clean and fully equipped (didn't miss anything). And of course, a fantastic garden to enjoy the breakfast!

Mark and Lori were the perfect hosts. Very helpful before our arriving, and really nice and friendly during our stay. On weekdays we didn't happen to meet because they wake up very early (they're silent people, btw) and we used to arrive late every night; but had a pair of nice talks on weekend mornings :)

    Would repeat without any doubt!

  • This was our first time using airbnb and overall was a great experience. If you want to stay in New Jersey to save some money this is the place to rent! Mark and Lori were very helpful before and during the trip. You get the whole basement to yourself and they stay upstairs. We can hear footsteps upstairs in the mornings but it didn't bother us too much. The house is older but is kept fairly clean. The view a block away of the skyline is amazing! We enjoyed coming back to a quiet neighborhood and the fresh air.

We stayed for 6 days and traveled to Manhattan every day. The buses and gypsy vans came every 10 mins so was pretty convenient (we took whichever came first). Not sure if it was because we were traveling during rush hour in the mornings (9:30am-11:30am), it typically took 30-45 mins to get to the Port Authority terminal where they drop you off in Manhattan (mainly due to the slow traffic on the Lincoln tunnel that connects New Jersey to Manhattan). Ensure to budget more time if you have reservations somewhere just in case as we were late for our boat cruise.

Overall, it was a good value and I recommend staying there if you are on a budget.

    Response from Mark & Lori:

We're glad you enjoyed the apartment and found it mostly to your liking. We try our best to walk quietly and not wear shoes when we have guests visiting. Travel times can vary based on time of day, and we're sorry you missed a reservation - we'd have been glad to provide guidance had you asked.

Note to potential guests, the apartment is on the ground floor. It is NOT underground - it has full size windows, and has one 6 inch step down when you enter.

  • The groovy apartment was fantastic, we felt like home. Transport to Manhattan is to easy, just 20 min. The apartment has all you need. Marc and Lori were so friendly and they helped us with our questions about transport, and they gave us good recommendations. We are sure that next time in NY, we will book again "the groovy apartment".

  • Our stay here was lovely. Mark & Lori were incredibly helpful. They provided us with all the information we needed for our stay. The apartment itself is groovy :) The view from riverside which is only half block away is worth a million dollars. The apartment has a lovely homely feel to it. We felt like staying in our brother's home. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

During this period, were my sister in love and my niece who stayed at Groovy Apartment.
It was our recommendation because we had stayed there before and definitely the best choice for a vacation in New York.
Mark and Lori are the best hosts ever!

  • For my 6th holiday in new york, I decided to book an apartment by Airbnb for the first time; the experience was amazing: Mark and Lori are very friendly hosts, and very helpful too. We could live like real "New Yorkers" in a very cozy apartment equipped with a useful kitchen (we used it for all breakfasts and some dinner) and good to accommodate two people; there's also a patio that we have not exploited because of low temperatures.
The thing that I preferred was the location: West New York is really located 15 min away from Times Square (where many subway lines are available, so you can go wherever you want in a few minutes). To get to Manhattan, you can take a bus or a "gipsy van" (private buses which works on the same route) to Port Authority bus terminal near Times Square; bus costs 2.70-3.20$, private van costs 3$ (cash only). The view you can see from West New York is amazing, better than the view from Brooklyn Park or from Staten Island: I recommend it for all photographers or enthusiasts.
If you're looking for a cheap solution to visiting New York, I recommend this apartment for the hosts, location and value for money: I will definitely stay in this apartment the next time I return to New York. Thank you Mark & Lori!

Lori is originally from Brooklyn and snuck out to NJ when her parents weren’t paying attention. Mark grew up in New Jersey, tried another place or two, ultimately deciding there is no place like home. After a long career in advertising, Lori now works as a horticultural therapist at NYU Langone Medical Center. That also pretty much means that she’s the one who keeps the front garden and backyard looking so wonderful! Mark works as a Product Manager for a financial software company, enjoys playing volleyball and listening to live music. He is always seeking out interesting events in the Tri-state area. We spend much of our time in New York City and love taking advantage of all the City has to offer. We'd be happy to recommend our favorite spot for music, places to eat or drink, and keep you aware of what we know is going on in the Big City.
