French country cottages nr Bergerac

House - Entire home/apt · Maurens, Aquitaine 24140, France

In a rural location only 5 minutes from the lively old town of Bergerac in the Dordogne, we offer 2 holiday homes for self catering rentals for 4. Ideal for sightseeing, wine tasting or activity holidays, or just for relaxing! Bike hire available.

The Space

The Chai is part of our group of buildings at Le Clos du Verger (Orchard Farm!). Open last year to the delight of our guests, the Chai (the former wine barn) and Chez le Charpentier (the Carpenter's Cottage) are welcoming, comfortable and stylish in an unfussy country way. The location is extremely convenient for visiting Bergerac, just 5 minutes drive away, and for exploring the vineyards, the historic sites, and the beautiful Dordogne Valley.

Whether for holidays or business, our holiday accommodation is well-appointed, and comes with WIFI internet access. Beds are comfortable and toileteries, towels and dressing gowns are provided. A laundry room is available for guests. We can supply a telephone on request.

Price quoted is the NIGHTLY RATE FOR 2 to 4 PEOPLE taking a self catering option. Minimum stay is 3 nights.
A week catering for yourself in the Chai ranges from 355 to 680 euros a week, depending on the time of year. Prices include bedlinen and towels.
We accept EUROS or POUNDS STERLING.

Each party is offered a welcome basket of tea, coffee, local goodies and a bottle of local wine.

Accommodation:
LE CHAI is a spacious and comfortable conversion of the former winery.
It provides private ground floor accommodation for guests, with independent access
- one double bedroom
- one twin bedded room
- adjacent shower room with large shower cubicle, 2 washbasins and WC.
- Living room with satellite TV, DVD, CDplayer, and the large outside terrace. Dining area and well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, cooking facilities, and fridge-freezer.

Underfloor heating keeps the place at a steady temperature from October to April, and there is also a woodburning stove. We try and work sustainably so the heating and hot water come from a geothermal source, and photovoltaic roof panels offset much of our electricity usage.

We also have the cottage Chez le Charpentier, sleeping 3 to 4.

BIKE HIRE packages available.

LOCATION & TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS
We are in the country (forests, vineyards, small fields of cows, lovely old villages), yet only a easy 5 minute drive from Bergerac, an interesting and lively old town on the beautiful Dordogne river in south west France. You will probably find a car useful if staying here, or we know a reasonably priced bike hire company who will deliver bikes to you here.

BY AIR
Bergerac airport is 20 minutes away with regular budget flights to 14 airports, mostly in the UK and northern Europe, making a long weekend break here as interesting an option as a longer holiday visit.
There is a wider range of international routes to the airport at Bordeaux, no more than 2 hours away.

BY CAR
If driving we are 15 minutes south of the Mussidan exit (exit 13) of the A89 motorway.

BY TRAIN
Bergerac is on the Bordeaux to Sarlat line or Mussidan station is on the Bordeaux to Périgueux line. We can collect you from either station or from Bergerac airport.

AND IN ENGLAND .....
We also have our comfortable little pied à terre in Norfolk available for self catering hire, as reviewed by Mike below.

Guest Access

You have total independence in the Chai including your own meal preparation area. You also have a barbeque by your large terrace for your outside summer cooking. The Chai terrace is your space and overlooks our hectare of gardens, orchard and field which drops gently down to a stream, via the goat paddock and the small field we reserve for ball games. You are welcome to enjoy the walk round the site and the area by the stream.

Interaction with Guests

Martin and I live on the site and will welcome you personally on your arrival. We are available throughout your stay and often invite guests to join us for an apéritif from time to time.

The Neighborhood

This is a beautiful part of France. It is a land of castles and old villages steeped in history, of forests, rivers, vineyards and small farms. Renowned for its historic sites, particularly the cave paintings and numerous chateaux, this is also a great place for an activity holiday . Explore on foot or by bike, on horseback or by car or canoe, by train or by bus and you will find every day a delight! Bergerac and the surrounding villages host regular festivities, and on 26 July the Tour de France route passes our door!

Getting around

Getting to the area by plane or train is relatively straightforward, but we do advise that a car is useful when staying here as there is no public transport in our village. We can recommend a good local car hire firm or the local taxi firm. We have also teamed up with a bike hire provider who will deliver your order to our door, and collect it again at the end of your stay.

Other Things to Note

We can supply breakfasts at an extra charge.

We have a very small herd of pygmy goats.

  • Jane and Martin are wonderful hosts. We had a whistlestop two night stay for a local wedding and were blown away by the level of hospitality we were offered. Martin came to collect us from the train station. The fridge was stocked with juice, yogurts, fruit and lots of other things. Breakfast pastries were provided. The bathroom had loads of shampoos and soaps for us. There were several towels in every room. Dressing gowns. The rooms were spacious and private, the facilities were excellent, the space tranquil and calm. Jane and Martin were lovely company too and shared drinks and nibbles with us, which they laid on. We had a bit of a self brought on disaster involving too much to drink and a missed flight. Martin drove us to the airport sharpish to sort it out. I would stay again and would recommend you do as well. When the swimming pool is completed, this place will be a slice of paradise. Thanks both.

About
I am delighted to be living near Bergerac in France and to have slotted happily into life in our little community. My husband Martin is a retired builder, We celebrated our arrival in France by getting married here! This place was derelict and beginning to fall down when we purchased it, but now our French neighbours are pleased that we have breathed new life into it, and it has become a place of wonderful international get togethers. We are proud of this lovely part of France and also have a little retreat in Norfolk, England. I hope you will enjoy staying in either location as much as we do.
