Rustic designer dream. Newer contemporary open living 2 bedroom private house on 15 acres with incredible views of sunset, Dominicalito fishing beach and Manuel Antonio. Bedrooms are glassed in but the living space is open. Wildlife viewing abounds. This 1700 sq. ft. home is perched above the jungle at the top of 2 slopes, so it has an incredible breeze that cools it off about 20 degrees. We have a very flat front and back lawn for easy outside use. On 3 sides there is a protected with plants drop off so you look over the canopy. We are at the top of the foothills 8 minutes drive up from the beach and behind us sits an old growth forested mountain cliff. Adventurous location on the mountain with a gravel road and a drive through a creek that has footbridge in case of emergencies.

There are two bedrooms that are glassed in. The upstairs bedroom is very large room with a full bath suite that includes a walk in shower with amazing view. Outside the bedroom is a huge veranda/ yoga platform overlooking the jungle, canopy and ocean. There is a custom built queen bed with 2 single mattresses in case you need them. You can sleep up to 4 people in this bedroom.

Covered laundry room with a washer (dryer hookup available for long term renters who bring dryers). We air dry our laundry on our lines. Wireless 2gb internet is available with $30 extra charge. One can usually , Facetime and stream movies. This house has a 10 minute drive up from the coastal highway and Dominicalito beach. 13 minute drive to the market. 14 minute drive to Dominical beach town that has small stores, restaurants, and a bank. Both Dominical and Dominicalito are great surf beaches.
South by 15 minutes is Uvita with lots of banks, restaurants, 2 large grocery stores, mechanics, medical daytime clinics, pharmacies, and the gas station. 10 minutes south of Uvita is Ojochal, which has many Europeans and great restaurants. 20 minutes south of Ojochal is Cortez with hospital. 45 minutes north of our house is Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park.

This house is great for independent and adventurous people who want to get away in a very private abode, have beautiful views and wildlife, yet have the town and ocean 10-15 minutes away in a car. 4wd drive is deeply recommended, especially during the rainy season.

Interaction with guests

I manage the house from the States so I try to respond to any questions as soon as possible, which is usually quite quick unless I am out of range with my phone. You will have the phone number of my very friendly part-time Costa Rican caretaker, Marvin, who only speaks Spanish. Either you can call him or I can call him if there is something he can help with. We have a friend, Julie who can has a concierge service for tours, massage, rentals, etc. I will be sending you her info, so if you'd like, you can contact her. I try to help with restaurant suggestions, etc if you need this. Most of our clients are wanting privacy and independence though, and are not excepting hotel like services at the house itself. There are tons of business in the town for Spanish and surf lessons, and to rent surf boards, paddle boards, etc. There are horseback riding waterfall tours, canyoning tours, zipline tours, and much more.

The neighborhood

The house is located in a very uniquely private end of a mountain road in the jungle. We have a few neighbors on the top of the hill with us, but might not see anyone during your stay. You will have a quick drive up or down from the main town and will have access to restaurants, rental shops, stores, etc

Getting around

Please allow yourself enough time to arrive during daylight. It is the jungle with no addresses, a dirt road climbing up, and you will be a lot happier finding our house the first time during daylight. (5:30-6:00 is sunset) Even though Dominical is only 2.5-3 hours from San Jose, driving in Costa Rica can be quite tiring. I recommend pulling over for dinner the first night in Dominical before coming up to the house. This way you can become better situated with the kitchen when you wake up on you first beautiful morning.

Other things to note

You are in the jungle and in an open house. Sometimes there will be very few insects, sometimes there will be more. They can fly in and out of the house. Sometimes the jungle is quiet and sometimes it is loud. The dry season January - March brings on cicada sounds that can be loud. There are animals in the jungle, but they tend to stay out of our main open living area unless you leave food and garbage out at night. Every day we see toucans and parrots, occasionally the monkeys, and sometimes really interesting animals. Geckos will be in the house, and occasionally a toad might visit. The bedrooms and bathrooms are the only part of the house fully protected by glassed in windows with screens (as pictured).

We stayed at Jillian's place for a week with our two boys (ages 6 and 12). The setting is absolutely beautiful; with ocean views in the jungle and a beautifully landscaped yard. We liked the location and enjoyed feeling secluded yet 10 min away from groceries etc. The open living space takes some getting used to and if you are travelling with kids this is something to think about. We camp a lot with our kids so they were okay (mostly) with the insects and wildlife in the home. Jillian was excellent with her communication and provided detailed directions and information about the house and the surrounding area. Overall, the stay was amazing!!

Exquisite location and views! I can ditto other reviews given. Gillian was great in responding quickly to our short notice request, after we found that our first Dominical lodging was too noisy with "human wildlife". Gillian and Jeff's open-air home was the perfect place to be, and we enjoyed the tranquility so much, with natural wildlife to serenade us. Yes, a few birds and butterflies came cruising through the living room and kitchen areas, as well as many geckos doing insect control. Toucans and hawks flew nearby, as well as other songbirds. Howler monkeys we audible, but not seen. As has been mentioned in other reviews, this may suit everyone's taste, but we enjoyed it! Lovely landscaped yard, too, with many compliments to the groundskeeper, Marvin. Everything was very clean, thanks to Marvin's wife. If we're ever back this way, this will be a favorite spot!

Thanks so much to Jillian, after a hectic 3 days in San Jose we were able to escape the chaos in her jungle retreat and show my son,3 the amazing views, animals and our visitors, we even saw bats by the front door! Totally fascinating for a toddler... communicating was great with Jillian, we had a few hick ups but Jillian was able to sort it out. Recommend

Jillian has a great place to stay. We have never stayed in a open air house but after 10 days, we now we love it. It's not to far from the village but yet it still provides relaxing environment. The views are wonderful, beds are comfortable and the upstairs shower is the best! Communication with owner was quick and easy. Would recommend this house to anybody wanting to stay in the Dominical area.

This home is more picturesque and beautiful than pictures can capture. You are truly immersed in the jungle with the sights and sounds to accompany the magical view. The ocean view is breathtaking, and waking up to the sounds of howler monkeys, birds and other Costa Rican wildlife every morning created an atmosphere of calm and relaxation. The home is stocked with everything - all of the basics you'll need to cook a fabulous meal plus towels, linens, and the comforts of home. In the night you'll be visited by amazing creatures. All kinds of harmless and interesting insects come to visit and we were able to explore them from the comfort of the home. Jillian provides fabulously clear directions to the home and detailed instructions about the surrounding area, beaches, supermarkets etc. Dominical is a wonderful town full of great food and amazing people. We loved the beaches nearby and found all of the things we needed to have a great adventure were close by. Jillian will connect you with someone that can help you arrange tours, day outings and adventures. They're knowledgeable and provide you with lots of different activities suitable for many different skill levels and ages. The road to the home is quite bumpy and would be very difficult to navigate for the very first time at night. I highly recommend following Jillian's advice and arriving before sunset on your first day. A 4x4 vehicle, in my opinion, is a necessity. The Poza Azul waterfalls which are close by a very nice, but I imagine they're even more breathtaking during the wet season when water levels are higher. Jillian's communication and attention to detail made this a smooth vacation. This was our first time in Costa Rica and Jillian's home was part of the reason we fell in love. We plan to return as soon as we can, and we certainly feel like we left a bit of our hearts behind!

Jillians communication was incredible. She was very helpful and her welcome packet is very useful. I would add a small bit of advice for finding the property the first time. When heading south along the highway, look for a blue and white sign saying "Coconut Grove" on the mountain side of the road, south of Domincal. The soccer field is .95 km past this sign. I say this because the soccer field can be a little hard to see when traveling at speed with cars behind you. The driveway does require a vehicle with a little ground clearance but is not a hard drive at all. We had NO problems with the creek crossing during our stay, even soon after a healthy rain storm (we stayed during the height of dry season). The pictures in the listing are wonderfully accurate. They DO NOT convey how beautiful this home is. Until you walk in and see the view from the kitchen/living room area, or from the back yard, you will never really know how nice it is. At night the temperature drops to a very comfortable level. Combine that with the fans and it makes the house very comfortable. Bugs: There are some, and as has been said before, you are in the jungle. In the evenings we had a small group of lizards on the walls near the lights, they are fun to watch. In the mornings we saw several iguanas in the yard at different times. Kitchen: Wonderfully stocked. I am not a chef but I can get down in a kitchen. I had everything I needed to cook whatever I felt like. Plenty of dishes, pans, cups and utensils. The stove is gas and cooks wonderfully. Marvin the caretaker and his wife Jamileta are both very nice. I speak very little Spanish (basically useless) and he made sure we knew what we needed about the house. Very accommodating and courteous. I would highly recommend this home to anyone looking to stay in the area. Everything about our stay was incredible.

We rented this on short notice and Jillian was super quick to respond thankfully!! We loved this open air home. The bedrooms are closed in leaving just the living space during the day as part of the open air feel. Absolutely loved this house. Really like the layout. I could totally live in this house! The driveway is really long and bumpy but it's seems that's what it takes to get to the amazing views so it's worth it! Got to hear howler monkeys see little toucans and the views of the ocean are awesome. The local caretaker was super helpful. We loved our stay!
