Ocean Sunset View Modern Open House

House - Entire home/apt · , Dominical, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

The Space

Newer contemporary 2 bedroom private house on 15 acres with incredible views of sunset, Dominicalito fishing beach and Manuel Antonio. Wildlife viewing abounds. This 1700 sq. ft. home is perched above the jungle at the top of 2 slopes, so it has an incredible breeze that cools it off about 20 degrees. We have a very flat front and back lawn for easy outside use. On 3 sides there is a protected drop off so you look over the canopy. We are at the top of the foothills over the beach and behind us sits an old growth forested mountain cliff. Adventurous location on the mountain with a gravel road and a drive through a creek.

There are two bedrooms that are glassed in. The upstairs bedroom is very large, with a huge veranda/ yoga platform overlooking the jungle, canopy and ocean. There is a custom built queen bed with 2 single mattresses in case you need them. You can sleep up to 4 people in this bedroom. There is also a downstairs 1/2 bathroom suite with sunset view and a custom queen bed.

The downstairs bedroom has a custom queen bed with sliding glass doors leading to the garden. This bedroom has a 1/2 bath indoors.

Open air living / dining/ kitchen space with custom modern furniture. Lock down bodega in the kitchen allows for good security in the open downstairs living area. Covered laundry room with a washer (dryer hookup available for long term renters who bring dryers). We air dry our laundry on our lines. Wireless internet USB plug that plugs directly into your computer is available with $30 extra charge. This house has a 10 minute drive up from the coastal highway and Dominicalito beach. 13 minute drive to the market. 14 minute drive to Dominical beach town that has small stores, restaurants, and a bank. Both Dominical and Dominicalito are great surf beaches.
South by 15 minutes is Uvita with lots of banks, restaurants, 2 large grocery stores, mechanics, medical daytime clinics, pharmacies, and the gas station. 10 minutes south of Uvita is Ojochal, which has many Europeans and great restaurants. 20 minutes south of Ojochal is Cortez with hospital. 45 minutes north of our house is Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park.

Long term rentals are negotiable

This house is great for independent and adventurous people who want to get away in a very private abode, have beautiful views and wildlife, yet have the town and ocean 10-15 minutes away in a car. 4wd drive is deeply recommended.

Interaction with Guests

I manage the house from the States so I try to respond to any questions as soon as possible. You will have the phone number of my very friendly part-time Costa Rican caretaker, Marvin, who only speaks Spanish. Either you can call him or I can call him if there is something he can help with. We do not have a concierge, but I try to help with rental suggestions, restaurants suggestions, etc if you need this. Most of our clients are wanting privacy and independency though, and are not excepting hotel like services. There are tons of business in the town that can set up Spanish and surf lessons, and rent surf boards, paddle boards, etc. There are horseback riding waterfall tours, canyoning tours, ziplining tours, and much more.

The Neighborhood

The house is located in a very uniquely private end of a mountain road in the jungle. We have a few neighbors on the top of the hill with us. You will have a quick drive up or down from the main town and will have access to restaurants, rental shops, stores, etc

Getting around

Please allow yourself enough time to arrive during daylight. It is the jungle, and you will be a lot happier finding our house the first time during daylight. (5:30-6:00 is sunset) Even though Dominical is only 2.5-3 hours from San Jose, driving in Costa Rica can be quite tiring. I recommend pulling over for dinner the fist night in Domincal before coming up to the house. This way you can become better situated with the kitchen when you wake up on you first beautiful morning.

Other Things to Note

You are in the jungle and in an open house. Sometimes there will be no insects, sometimes there will be more. Sometimes the jungle is quiet and sometimes it is loud. The dry season brings on cicada sounds that can be loud. There are animals in the jungle, but they tend to stay out of our main open living area unless you leave food and garbage out at night. Every day we see toucans and parrots, occasionally the monkeys, and sometimes really interesting animals. Geckos will be in the house, and occasionally a toad might visit. The bedrooms and bathrooms are the only part of the house fully protected by glassed in windows with screens (as pictured).
If you decide to rent the internet plug, please realize that it is an individual USB plug that plugs directly into laptops. It will not act as a modem for tablets and phones directly. Our Mac that we bring down for our personal use can be use as a router and send the signal to other devices. You can probably do the same if you have that capability in your computer.

  • Renting Jillian's Dominical house was the best thing we could have possibly done. The house was perfect in every way. We saw different animals daily and were so at peace surrounded by the noises of the jungle around the serene and private house. It's hard to list my favorite things but here are a few: the view from the upstairs shower at sunset, laying out on the hammock, picnicking in the grass behind the house, showering in the outdoor shower, walking the road at sunrise to see more monkeys, and even the pleasant dings of the washing machine. Our 2.5 weeks at the house were the absolute best ever! My boyfriend and I had privacy, but also help from Marvin the caretaker and Jillian (email) whenever we needed it. Jillian was so quick to respond and always very helpful and kind. Marvin is so sweet and it was such a pleasure to practice our Spanish with him. The local beaches are perfection. Hermosa and dominicalito were our favorites for opposite reasons, surfing then shells/ tide pools respectively. All of the nearby waterfalls are great but posa azul (ref: Jillian's directions) was our favorite as it was so nearby, fun, secluded, and the locals were always nice (it helps if you speak Spanish) . I could go on and on, but I will just sum this up by saying. DO IT. Book this house and you will not regret it.

  • Jillian's house was just fabulous and we really enjoyed the week that we spent there. The house is not only gorgeous and unique, it's also very functional and comfortable.
Jillian was so helpful and responsive before and during our stay. We could also count on Marvin, our local contact.
In short, if you're for a great accommodation in that area, don't think twice and contact Jillian.

  • This place was amazing! If you want to stay off the beaten path, go here! My wife and I stayed here for 7 days on our honeymoon, it was perfect. You must have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the house. It's about a 10 minute drive up to the house from the main road, just cross through the river (my wife loved this) and follow Jillian's directions closely, they are very accurate.
The house was incredible...amazing views and relaxing atmosphere.
Recommended for those who want a lot of privacy and a bit of adventure.

  • Castle in the hills! Beautiful house. Beautiful view. Tranquility.
Definitely need a car to get there - almost definitely a 4wd too.
Close to town, so only a short 5min drive to the beach and the surf.
Certainly an intriguingly designed house - bringing the outside in.
    All positive

  • This house really was phenomenal. Its located in the jungle which makes it feel so special. You have views of the ocean and all the surrounding jungle. The sunsets were so beautiful they didn't look real. I would highly recommend this place and will definitely come again. The wildlife you see is great as well. We loved the outdoor kitchen living room. Great place!!!!

  • We loved Jillian's home. The views were breathtaking, the location ultra private. The home was very clean and unique.

Before our arrival Jillian communicated very clearly with me to help us arrive safely, gave suggestions for rental car companies etc. Her communications were very clear.

Her caretaker was thoughtful and very proactive about making sure we were comfortable. He even left a beautiful bouquet of flowers for our arrival.

The area was quite and not over run. The beaches breathtaking and again private.

We would love to return soon to Jillian's beautiful home.

  • We had a wonderful time in Jillian's open house. The house's open layout makes it so that you can truly feel like you're living at one with the Pacific's coast jungle and makes it easy to disconnect. The house is well located for you to explore the Southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. It has everything you need to stay comfortably and the fully equipped kitchen has everything you need to cook a full meal. I would advise future guests to bring some sound equipment (like an Ipod deck). Since there's no tv, it's nice to be able to listen to music. The family's board game collection also makes for some fun evenings. All in all, a really nice experience!

  • Want to experience the "Pura Vida"?

Try Jillian's place, a joy for all the senses. What a fantastic location with a great view on the tropical rainforest and the sea, sunsets from the garden. A very private getaway, you hardly feel the need to leave, hammock provided. Just bring some books and you're all set.

It will take you around ten minutes to cover the dirt track to the house, going straight through the lush jungle. First time will probably take a bit longer.

Take Jill's advice to arrive during daytime and yes, you need a 4x4 car to get there! It's about 15 minutes to Dominical, a very laid back surf town.

Jill's responds to email very quickly. Great stay and will certainly recommend this place to other people.

  • Jillian has a spectacular home in the mountain rainforests of Costa Rica overlooking Dominicalito Beach.

The home itself is a phenomenal combination of modernist architectural design and traditional Costa Rican construction. It features an open-concept living space that allows the kitchen, living, and dining areas, to flow unobstructed outdoors into the backyard, and drop into the rainforest below. The home is well constructed, of solid concrete and tropical wood, with elegant tile finishing’s. It is very clean and comfortable, and a joy to reside in. The two bedroom areas are fully enclosed, and feature spectacular views of the coastline. The climate in this region is comfortable year-round, both in the day and at night

If you are an eco enthusiast, you will love the vast arrays of exotic flora and fauna surrounding the home. We saw species of creatures and plant life that we had only ever seen in films or read about.

For those unfamiliar with the Costa Rican mountain roads, the drive-in for the first time may be a bit unnerving. However by the second day, we had become quite accustom with the winding route. The phenomenal vistas and lush foliage along the way overshadowed the bumpy ride up and down the forested hillside.

The Dominicalito Beach and Waterfalls are not far from the home, and are absolutely beautiful and unspoiled by commercial establishments.

I would strongly recommend a stay here for any great lover of the outdoors
