Interaction with Guests
I manage the house from the States so I try to respond to any questions as soon as possible, which is usually quite quick unless I am out of range with my phone wi-fi. You will have the phone number of my very friendly part-time Costa Rican caretaker, Marvin, who only speaks Spanish. Either you can call him or I can call him if there is something he can help with. We have a friend, Victoria who can has a concierge service for tours, massage, rentals, etc. I will be sending you her info, so if you'd like, you can call her. I try to help with restaurant suggestions, etc if you need this. Most of our clients are wanting privacy and independence though, and are not excepting hotel like services at the house itself. There are tons of business in the town for Spanish and surf lessons, and to rent surf boards, paddle boards, etc. There are horseback riding waterfall tours, canyoning tours, zipline tours, and much more.
The house is located in a very uniquely private end of a mountain road in the jungle. We have a few neighbors on the top of the hill with us. You will have a quick drive up or down from the main town and will have access to restaurants, rental shops, stores, etc
Please allow yourself enough time to arrive during daylight. It is the jungle with no addresses, a dirt road climbing up, and you will be a lot happier finding our house the first time during daylight. (5:30-6:00 is sunset) Even though Dominical is only 2.5-3 hours from San Jose, driving in Costa Rica can be quite tiring. I recommend pulling over for dinner the first night in Dominical before coming up to the house. This way you can become better situated with the kitchen when you wake up on you first beautiful morning.
Other Things to Note
You are in the jungle and in an open house. Sometimes there will be very few insects, sometimes there will be much more. They can fly in and out of the house. Sometimes the jungle is quiet and sometimes it is loud. The dry season January - March brings on cicada sounds that can be loud. There are animals in the jungle, but they tend to stay out of our main open living area unless you leave food and garbage out at night. Every day we see toucans and parrots, occasionally the monkeys, and sometimes really interesting animals. Geckos will be in the house, and occasionally a toad might visit. The bedrooms and bathrooms are the only part of the house fully protected by glassed in windows with screens (as pictured).
Please bring your own beach towels and keep all house towels and sheets clean, hung, and in the house. There is no maid service during your stay unless you request it for an extra charge. Please turn off all fans and lights when gone or not in room and keep all doors and kitchen / personal items locked when gone.
master bedroom is twice as big as photo with full balcony. TV has no reception but has vcr and videos. Walk-in closet and bath suite
If you’re looking for the place you’re staying in to be an experience in and of itself, you should certainly stay in Jillian’s mountaintop house! The views are incredible and the open concept living room means that you truly become a part of the jungle you’re staying in. Absolutely rent a car with 4 wheel drive to stay here and do arrive in the daytime- we made the mistake of journeying up the mountain for the first time in the dark, which was harrowing! Once we were able to do it in the daytime, however, it became a fun part of coming and going from the house. The town of Dominical is wonderful for a laid-back vacation with lots of beach time and wildlife watching. A tip- ask a local how to get to Playa Linda a few kilometers north of Dominical, it was stunning and always nearly empty! The house is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for a little adventure, you’ll love staying here!
Jillian was the most accommodating host. She made sure we were safe and comfortable the entire time we were there. The home is absolutely memorable in every way possible. I recommend it to anyone. The only thing missing was a radio for those nights of dancing on the lawn under the starts, but we made do! The scenery is stunning and the sounds of the forrest truly make you feel as though you're living "Pura Vida." I'll definitely be back. Cheers and thank you so much Jillian.
We spent a lovely week at Jillian's home. She was super responsive and was very helpful before and during our stay. Even though we didn't speak any Spanish, we got along fine with Marvin on the first day as he showed us around. Jillian's home is a dream and Dominicalito is great if you want to be away from busier tourist towns. I would definitely advise leaving yourself plenty of time to arrive during daylight on the first day as the turn into the road to her house is easy to miss in the dark and the subsequent drive up the mountain can be a little harrowing for lifelong city dwellers. Don't buy too many perishables and stock the fridge to the brim as the power does go out from time to time (sometimes for 20min, sometimes for a few hours), making it questionable if the raw meat you bought will still be edible the next day. We had a little disappointment with Victoria, who handles tour bookings, but Jillian was prompt and considerate in addressing it. Overall, it was an amazing week in Costa Rica! I would definitely come back and stay with Jillian again!
Thanks Michelle. I am glad you had a good time and you were a great guest!
I often have people asking me for assistance with reservations on tours, etc, and I cannot help from the US. So I give people a referral to Victoria's concierge service, which is a separate business. Unfortunately she had a family emergency the week during your stay and made a major glitch. I apologize for that again. As of this week she has made some changes in terms of keeping certain hours and making sure she will be able to properly follow up so that I can continue referring people to her. From what I know, she has done a really good job for our guests up until last week and will now have better back up in case of another emergency. thanks for your patience!
We had a fantastic time in Dominical. I have travelled a lot and have never wanted to return to a place so badly. Jillian's place is beautiful. It's nestled high up on a perch in the mountains, affording incredible ocean views. We really enjoyed watching the sunsets, waking to the sounds of monkeys and being lulled to sleep by the melodic tune of the birds. The drive up the mountain several times a day was a highlight for us, as we think of ourselves as adventurers, but it is not for the faint of heart. It is very steep, narrow and twisted and, there is a creek to cross. For us, it was always thrill ride. Do not try to find it at night, it is so easy to find in daylight, but your landmarks are difficult to find at night. We could not have been happier with our stay.
Casa de Jeff y Jillian is perfect! My husband and I immediately felt at home: surrounded by nature and the glorious smells of frangipani and fresh rain! The proximity to surfing beaches was ideal and the sense of privacy allowed us to take it all in at our own pace. The home was a fabulous jumping off point for all of the outdoor activities we were hoping to undertake during our week-long stay (snorkeling, hiking, surfing, and more). Victoria, the concierge, arranged a tour of Corcovado for us, which was fantastic! We took advantage of the outdoor shower nightly, after evening surf sessions down in Dominicalito y Playa Hermosa. Marvin, the caretaker, was a gem! So sweet and welcoming and even giving us hugs and kisses upon our departure. Jillian was very proactive about checking in with us prior to and after our arrival. She was very responsive to our questions. Having wi-fi at the house also meant that we didn't need our phones to stay in touch with family and friends back home. We wouldn't change a thing about our time there (not even the coati/raccoon (we think) poop downstairs or the chirping geckos crawling on the ceilings!). We are already dreaming of our next visit- maybe this time we'll bring our two boys! Thank you, Jillian, for opening your home to us!
This place is amazing. In the middle of the jungle you start to feel home quickly. The architecture is great so you start your day with a smile. Preparing breakfast with a great view on the pacific, listening the monkeys and the wild birds. The spot is perfect cause you can discover the area by car - Manuel Antonio, the beautiful beach right infront (playa dominicalito), the national parc in uvita. The host family and the caretaker are super friendly and helpfull.
What a great House! So private and relaxing. Jillian could not have made out experience in the Dominical area any more convenient and comforting. When we arrived the caretaker was extremely friendly and gave great house information. This house has amazing views and is completely ready for your Costa Rica vacation. The Gardens were amazing all kinds of flowers and fruit trees very well maintained. The recommendation of a 4x4 is spot on, the road is in great shape but if you encounter slippery roads you will be glad you went with a 4x4.
Do not hesitate to book this house, I highly recommend both the Owners and the House.
