This beautiful suite is located across the street from the turquoise caribbean waters of Tulum, Quintana Roo, right in the hotel zone. It can accomodate up to 6 people, as it has a king size bed, a full bed and two twin beds. It has a full bathroom inside the suite. It also has a small pool where you can refresh when coming back from the beach (most hotels don't have a pool, so this is a privilege in Tulum). You can overlook the beach strip where everything is happening from its balcony. At the bottom floor there is a restaurant called Simple where you can have a delicious meal, or you also have a wide variety of nice restaurants and bars in the close surroundings. There is also a nice clothes and jewelry boutique where you can shop for nice local crafts and outfits. You can either take a bike ride or have a relaxing walk by the beach strip, you will find a place to have a freshly squeezed juice, a sandwich, a good wine or a top-class whole meal.
"A state of disappointment and angst in a place of bliss" I was very much looking forward to writing this review during our time in Tulum, Mexico staying at what was described as the 'Beautiful Suite'. This description was far from the truth, and the description on airbnb was most misleading. My mother, sister and I recently spent a week in Tulum to celebrate my sister's 30th birthday. The very special reason for our visit was mentioned to the contact person,Tania, who was in charge of this airbnb rental, and so it was with particular disappointment when we arrived at our "Beautiful Suite", to find a living space that had not been at all prepared for our arrival. The futon cover and cushions were old and dirty and the one lounge chair, ancient and filthy. The floor had not been swept and we had a sense that no one responsible for this rental had taken any interest in its preparation. This was further evident when we entered the bathroom to find urine that had not been flushed in the toilet, and the bathroom facility itself very old and dirty in appearance with a nauseating smell. On the positive side, the beds did have clean linen. To further compound our unwelcome welcome, there was no running water when we awoke our first morning in Tulum. Tania had seemed extremely attentive to my e-mails prior to our arrival, but once we arrived Tania was no where to be seen from the day we arrived until the day we left. She did not check in once by telephone, e-mail or in person during our stay. When we requested to speak with Tania about the loss of water as well as the very dirty space, the gentleman who worked at the restaurant below said Tania would be there the following day, which as the days passed we realized would not be happening. By the end of our stay, we did wonder if indeed "Tania" existed, or was "Tania" someone affilated to the restaurant, Simple, below the rental space, who did not want to identify themselves. Having paid $125 per night, I had expected at least that the living space would be reasonably well furnished, and certainly very clean as it appeared in the airbnb photographs. When we initially complained, a kind gentleman did come and mop the space and attempted to clean the bathroom. He also turned on the water, which we understood was a "simple matter" to fix. But why was there a loss of running water in the first place? Were we not considered PAYING guests? We felt as if the only really attentive being was the lizard visitor who installed himself in our suite that we named 'Izzy', who kept us good company in our space. We grew to accept his camouflaged figure in our "Beautifut Suite". I would suggest that "Tania" describe this space honestly on airbnb so that future guests are not disappointed as we were. It is not...
This apartment is rustic but lovely. The people at Simple, not to mention the food, are great. A very hospitable place and a comfortable hideaway. Would definitely stay there again.
If you like rustic living, which I do, this place is for you. Checkin is tricky. I couldn't find Tania (actually never saw her during the entire stay). The staff at the adjoining restaurant Simple was super helpful getting us settled. We lost power and water a few times but that seems to be systematic of Tulum and not this unit.
Easy access to the beach. Plenty of room of to spread out. The room could use a bit of updating and better effort at cleaning. Overall I enjoyed the stay and I highly recommend eating at Simple - the staff there is awesome.
The location is really good, but the room standard with every now and then (too much to be acceptable) lacking warm water, poor water and electricity supply, bad work toilet....
Very friendly people to deal with helping out promptly though.
Our arrival at Tania's place didn't quite work out as expected... No one was really expecting us to give us the keys and show us the place. Besides, some noisy construction was going on at the restaurant Simple, which is located right next to the apartment. In the end, we met Javier, who asked us to wait a little because he had to finish cleaning up the place (it was about 5 p.m.). When we finally got into the room, he told us that the construction work would start at 7 a.m.! We were more than a little worried when Richie, who owns the restaurant, knocked on our door. He was very kind and told us not to worry, because the heavy construction was in fact being finalized, which turned out to be true.
The building's location is good, but you have to walk about 150 m to access the beach, because the apartment is on the jungle side of the road and the beach side is taken up by small hotels. The room was nice and quite spacious, but the bathroom could have been nicer. Hot showers are certainly not the norm in the area, but all we had was a nearly warm almost trickle... In the end, we stayed only for 7 nights, when we had actually booked 8 nights, mostly to be able to spend a night in Cancun and take a real shower before travelling back to Brazil.
Tulum beach is still quite undevelloped, and the buildings are mostly rustic... Still, we could have done with a little more comfort. Yet it must be said that the bed and cushions were nice, the fans did the work expected of them, the wifi worked nearly without hassles and our dinner at the restaurant Simple was excellent!
Apartment is spacious and clean. Location right across the street of the beach. Wifi did not work during our stay and we had some water / electricity issues. There was someone there most of the time so we could ask for, water and electricity to be turned back on when needed. We didn't have time to try the "simple" restaurant located below the apartment but the fish looked amazing and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
All in all good value for your money in Tulum! We where 2 but sleeps around 5 people.
Amazing location and equally great hosts. Tania was very attentive and the room was very clean. There is no A/C in the room but there are enough fans to make it comfortable for our group (in August). Loved all of the staff at Simple and the food was amazing but a bit expensive. I would highly recommend this apartment to anyone looking for a relaxing Tulum getaway.
Awesome experience and the sweetest people!
The staff at Simple were simply wonderful! We were made to feel immediately at home by everyone. The apartment was very clean and fresh drinking water was provided. Our beds were made for us every day and we were given clean sheets and towels after 2 days, we weren't expecting this level of service for the low price we paid.
Javier helped us get the collectivo in to town as its much cheaper than a taxi, he then took us to where we needed to be. The children loved the pool to cool down at the end of the day. A couple of evenings we were able to settle the children in bed and sit at the bar and have a beer and chat with staff and customers, it was lovely we met some really interesting folks
The one downside was that it was sooo hot with out a/c (we knew in advance that the suite wasn't airconditioned but decided to risk it) the guys did everything they could to make us comfortable providing fans for the end of our beds but it was the middle of summer. Richie said they're planning a few improvements, a fridge would be a welcome addition but I fully understand the limitations of being in the middle of the jungle and how much power a generator can provide.
Thanks guys we will have such lovely memories of our time with you x
