About this listing

Sac Nicté is a unique opportunity to live in a rural Mayan community. The three traditional oval-shaped cabañas are set in their own private compound of tropical gardens. We have no beds, and guests sleep in hammocks, just like the Mayans.

Description

The space

Deep in the heart of the land of the mayas, this property offers you a rare opportunity to experience life in a mayan village. 50km SE of Merida, Yucatan, in the village of Chunkanan, you will find Sac Nicte (mayan for White Flower), your little corner of paradise. Three typical mayan houses with palapa roofs, rented together as a single unit, are set in private tropical gardens. Ideally suited for up to four guests sleeping in hammocks, two more hammocks can be provided, giving accommodation for up to six guests. There is a large lap pool, whose pure water supply is pumped by windmill from a 14m well. Hammocks, linen, kitchen equipment, daily maid service and 24 hour offsite caretaker are included. The facilities are both luxurious (!) with hot running water in the bathroom, electric light, a cd player, a refrigerator and indoor cooking facilities - and rustic - you sleep mayan-style in hammocks (there are no beds), the bathroom is not en suite, no a/c, and no tv. For the intrepid traveller, this is all part of the adventure! The area is well known for its wonderful birdwatching opportunity, and many different and rare species can be seen from the comfort of your mayan house. The night skies are a star-gazer's delight. Authentic mayan meals cooked on three stones, tasting fresh and smokey, can be delivered to your door. A Mayan Ceremony can be arranged, held by a genuine mayan shaman. You can have your wedding or commitment ceremony, baptism or naming ceremony, spiritual cleansing, attract love and success, or just celebrate your gratitude for the wonderful things in life. Sac Nicte is the ideal location for a beautiful ceremony. The village of Chunkanan is the starting point for visiting the three famous cenotes (sacred underground lakes) by horse-drawn mini-rail truck (also known as the Cenotes of Cuzama). Staying in Sac Nicte you will be able to go early, or late, when the cenotes can be appreciated in their true magnificence in peace and solitude. A special night-time visit to the cenotes can be arranged. Sac Nicte is a perfect base for visiting the archaeological sites of Acanceh and Mayapan, the Lagunas of Yalahau, and many cenotes hidden in the jungle, known only to the locals. There is an excellent restaurant in the village of Chunkan, serving delicious Yucatecan food. The rate quoted below is for up to four guests. For stays longer than two days, the prices are adjusted according to the number of guests.

Guest access

Sac Nicté is a private compound. Guests have access to all parts of the property, except the bodegas.

Interaction with guests

My caretaker, Don Santiago, is available 24/7 to give advice or help.

The neighborhood

Sac Nicté is set in the village of Chunkanán, which is famous for the three cenotes (sacred mayan underground lakes), which can be visited by horse-drawn truck which goes on a monorail deep into the mayan jungle. Nearby there are other cenotes at Cuzamá, Homún, and Sabacché.

Getting around

Parking is inside the compound, under a palapa roof. There is access to buses, and trici-taxis, but it is preferable to have your own transport.

Other things to note

It is part of the adventure to sleep in hammocks while you stay at Sac Nicté. Hammocks are provided, together with sheets, sleeping bags and blankets for those rare chilly nights. Please note that there are no beds, only hammocks.

Elizabeth's Sac Nicte Mayan retreat was a wonderful getaway. Finding the place is an adventure in itself, staying there is another one. We felt welcomed in the village and made fantastic use of Elizabeth's private pool. Many fond memories! Thank you!

Great adventure and Santiago did a wonderful job of taking care of us! Be sure read the guide provided on how to sleep in a hammock, and hopefully the neighbor's rooster gets over its tummy ache and doesn't crow all night long.

Very cool experience! Like nothing I've done before. Sleeping in hammocks was cool. The care taker don Santiago is a great guy! He took us on a cenote trip in the morning and it was very fun! Amazing sights to explore.

Elizabeth's caretaker, Santiago, was a sweet, attentive and friendly neighbor who met us at the driveway and led us in. He checked in with us often, brought us a pile of fresh fruit, hung and rehung our hammocks, and took us on a private tour of the cenotes with his own horse and cart. His wife Celia made us a delicious Mayan meal one night which Santiago delivered. The pool was refreshing and clean, and the huts very quaint and special. One word of advice to guests: Pillows and blankets are not included. Clothing can be folded up under head and knees for better hammock sleeping, but if evening temps are cool, purchase a few blankets before you arrive. It will be worth it as this is a very special rental you do not want to miss!

Response from Elizabeth:
Thank you for your feedback. I will make sure pillows are provided in future. However, I am surprised that my caretaker did not offer you sleeping bags and blankets, both of which are available for guests for the rare cooler nights. I will make sure that this is taken care of for future guests.

Sac Nicte is rare opportunity to experience Maya village life in a rural Yucatan setting. Mr. Santiago welcomed us to the property and took us on an early morning cent tour. We rode the horse drawn rail cart and enjoyed having the cenotes all to ourselves. It was so quiet and peaceful. The property is located on the edge of the village, but is very private. The swimming pool was large and refreshing on a hot day. Both Elizabeth and Santiago were were quick to address any needs or problems. This property offers a unique opportunity to experience the Maya lifestyle and enviornment.

Santiago was very helpful making sure we were comfortable, that we got a good rate for the cenote tour, found a place for dinner, etc. accommodations were rustic, as expected. The setting was very tranquil, notwithstanding the ubiquitous roosters and barking dogs. Hammocks were very comfortable.

I am English and have lived in Mexico for more than ten years. I came here from London to retire from working as a violinist and violin teacher, but found living in Merida offered many opportunities, including playing in the Orquesta Sinfonica de Yucatan. I created Sac Nicte as an oasis to escape from the bustling city of Merida, and am happy to be able to share with you this unique and wonderful mayan village experience.
