If you're planning a trip to New York this holiday season, you should consider staying at our place in the super charming Hudson Heights subsection of Washington Heights in Northern Manhattan.
The apartment is a moderately sized one-bedroom in a handsome pre-war building. It comes complete with a queen size bed, full bathroom, a spacious living room, and an eat-in kitchen. It's a cozy place, fully appointed with comfortable furniture (including a piano and tons of books!) and warm hardwood/parquet floors. The building has washers and driers in the basement. The apartment is fully equipped with high speed Wi-Fi internet.
Interaction with Guests
We like to meet our guests in person during check in and check out, if that's possible. Apart from that, we like to keep a low profile so you can enjoy your privacy during your stay.
Hudson Heights is a lovely neighborhood perched on a bluff overlooking surrounding Washington Heights: it's contains the spot that is at the highest natural elevation on the entire island. The neighborhood is bordered on the South at West 181st Street and the East at Fort Washington Avenue by large cliff faces with impressive, Montmartre-style, outdoor stairways. The Hudson River forms HH's West border, and Fort Tryon Park (with the Cloisters Museum of Medieval Art) forms its Northernmost border. The whole neighbordhood has a lovely, suburban feel, with lots of trees, parks, and beautiful views of the George Washington Bridge, the Henry Hudson river, and New Jersey Palisades. The neighborhood has all the conveniences of living in New York, but it doesn't feel like you're in a big city here. Our apartment is located at the end of a cul-de-sac: since there's no through traffic outside, it's very quiet inside. You could almost forget you're in Manhattan! Probably for this reason, a lot of young couples with babies and students and older people live around here. It's hard not to be charmed by this place.
The immediate surrounding area has some wonderful restaurants and grocery stores (Italian, Irish Pub, sushi, Chinese, Mexican, Russian, American/Southwestern, pizza, Thai, Indian, Tapas, bars, bakeries, diners, access to numerous Latin-American cuisines in nearby Washington Heights, organic and specialty-foods groceries, wine stores, locally owned coffee shops, Starbucks, etc.). There are also a number of nearby churches and synagogues, a Pilates studio, bike trails along the river, and an awesome, independently owned day spa.
The apartment is one block away from the A train, which runs express back and forth from Midtown in about 25 minutes. A few blocks further away, the 1 train runs locally and gets you to Midtown in about 50 minutes. The M98 bus stop (one block away) has almost immediate access to the Harlem-125th Street MetroNorth train station for day-trips to Conncticut, and a blocks beyond that is the nearby George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal for day-trips throughout New Jersey.
Other Things to Note
As you can see from the pictures of our apartment, we also have a super adorable cat named Noa. If you like cats and don't mind having Noa with you during your visit, we would be happy to offer you a discounted rate on our apartment in exchange for some basic catsitting services. (Noa loves making new friends!) Food and water will be set out and available for him, so all he'll need is a little bit of love. If you're not a fan of cats, or if you'd just prefer to have the place to yourself, we can make plans to have him stay elsewhere during your visit: we have lots of friends and neighbors who can watch him while we're out of the apartment.
Simply treat our home with the same respect that you treat your own home with. We have an upright piano that you are welcome to play, but please refrain from using any of the other digital or acoustic instruments. Quiet hours are between 10pm-8am. We don't allow pets, or smoking inside the apartment. Apart from that, relax and enjoy!
Joseph had a beautiful and well kept apartment. He was very easy to correspond with and helpful with any questions. Our time at the apartment was very enjoyable. The building is quiet and comfortable. It was especially nice to spend time with Noah- his very friendly cat who kept us company. I recommend this apartment to anyone looking for a place in Hudson Heights.
Thank you for your kind review, Fabienne! For our potential guests who might not read French, I'm posting this translation, courtesy of (website hidden) Translate:
"We had a great time in this apartment. Our hosts were very welcoming while waiting for us despite the delay of our airplane, sympathetic to our state of fatigue, and they even took care of our first breakfast. Even though the apartment is situated in the northern part of Manhattan, the A subway line is a 2-minute walk away, and it allowed us to get almost anywhere quickly, even to JFK. The apartment has all the necessary comforts, including WIFI, and the building has a laundry room in the basement that is very convenient. If we return we will happily inquire to stay with Joseph again."
Joseph and Ryan was great hosts. They was friendly, respectful, helpful and amazing, even I arriving late night, they waited for me to give me the keys. The apartment was super clean, neat, organized and it has everything as described on the apartment listening. The hosts was always helpful, helping with the heater and parking questions... All our interactions, even by email, phone or text messages, was super professional and with a quickly response.
About the apartment, an amazing 1BR apartment, super close to the subway (less then 1 block). The neighborhood was good, with a lot of stores and supermarket close, and even a starbucks at the corner.
The bedroom has a perfect size, very clean and with a lot of lights. The internet wifi was great, helping to connect with my family at Xmas evening. The bathroom was very clean, they even left for me extra towels.
The whole experience was amazing, I loved NYC, J and R was great hosts, I couldn't had choose a better place to stay, I really recommend their apartment, and I'll stay there again in the future...
Dec 2012 - Jan 2013
Nice to meet you! In the profile pictures you see at your left, I'm the one with the dark hair and glasses, and the handsome guy sitting next to me is Ryan, my partner. Together we live in a one-bedroom apartment in what's often called "Hudson Heights," a handsome, secluded subsection of the larger Washington Heights neighborhood in upper Manhattan, about 25 minutes' subway ride away from Midtown and Times Square. We've lived here since 2009, but we've been together since 2004.
Ryan and I both work in higher education: his field is music and mine is theater studies. We love the arts, reading, film, quality television, good food, wine, dancing, taking day-trips, and spending time with our friends and families.
We always leave town during the holidays to visit our respective families across the country, and so we decided to join AirBnB to help us find potential guests to stay at our place during the Christmas season and, potentially, during other times throughout the year. We're excited to see what possibilities AirBnB has in store for us, both as hosts and as travelers.
As you can see from the pictures of our apartment, we also have a super adorable cat named Noa. We typically don't take Noa with us during our winter travels, so we can offer a discounted rate for our apartment in exchange for some basic catsitting services. Noa loves making new friends, and if you read our guest reviews below, you'll see some super positive testimonials about him: he's a really sweet, affectionate cat that gets along really well with just about everybody. Food and water will be set out and available for him, so all he'll need is love. If you're not a big fan of cats, we can also obviously make plans for Noa to stay elsewhere during your visit, so you have the place all to yourself.
We're looking forward to hearing from you and getting to know you.
