The Space

Our double rooms have one double bed and a private bath (with hot water!!), these rooms are for 2 people.
Low season rate, September-November $40/nite
High season, December-August $50/nite
This price includes all taxes and breakfast for 2.

We have several various room options from double occupancy up to 4 guests, any guest past the second is a $10 charge, 11 rooms total. The lodge has a large common area with free wi-fi for guests, a lounge with a large library, and large common room / dining area. Breakfast is provided. You may use the common areas at your leisure! Seasonally you may find snacks and goodies for sale. We have one horse, two cats and four dogs; in short, we are a pet-friendly lodge :)

We are situated at the edge of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, and the views and sounds are simply breathtaking. Wake up to the sound of a Bellbird, and to a view of biodiversity like you wouldn't believe! Our house was one of the first built in Monteverde, and its quirky, wooden style is part of our charm. You will find us in Monteverde proper, well outside of Santa Elena yet still less than a 10 min. ($5) cab ride away. Although, you don't have to go far to find anything that you need in Monteverde, we have a locally-sourced food store and several restaurants within a 5-10 minute walk and almost all of the sights you came here to see in the first place are right outside our door! The Cheese Factory and the Friends School/Meetinghouse are both just minutes away by foot.

At La Colina we can set up all of your recreational activities and tours right from our front desk, just ask! We can also provide information and set up transportation to and from many major areas in the country for you if needed.

Ask us about group rates, package deals and our yoga/conference area which can be rented as well for group activities!

We accept colones or US dollars.

Interaction with Guests

Offering a tour desk to help design the perfect visit to Monteverde, group breakfasts in the morning, and live music and art events in the evenings, you will get well acquainted with both Kelly and Mauricio during your stay with us! :)

Getting around

Parking is available for those traveling in their own car, and taxi service is fast and reliable for those without. There are several options to arrive here from the airport, and we are happy to help arrange any transportation necessary!

  • We had a great stay at La Colina - you feel like you are living in the rainforest. Nice breakfast too! The property could use some fixing up but if you are more of the adventurous type rather than wanting a five star hotel experience, you will enjoy it.

  • We had a great night stay at La Colina. The Lodge is very chill and comfortable, as if you are staying with friends. The room was roomy and the shower heat/pressure was amazing. Breakfast was delicious and made by fellow travelers who were in the middle of a longer stay. We look forward to staying with Kelly again!

  • La Colina Lodge is an adorable hotel right in the heart of Monteverde. It was easy to find and just what we needed for our one night stay. The room was comfortable and bright. I didn't realize that breakfast was offered in the morning, or I would have planned my trip accordingly - I didn't have a chance to try the delicious smelling food! Kelly was super helpful and guided us to a reserve that wasn't as well known. We appreciated her recommendation and she even held our bags for us after check-out so we could go hiking without issue.

  • La Colinas will not disappoint. I loved that the property was out of the busier Santa Elena, but walking distance to a grocery store and a couple of restaurants. The rooms are all comfortable and made me feel at home. The sunset views are worth the stay alone. Kelly is an excellent host who goes above and beyond, everyday. Breakfast and dinner are always something delicious, clean and healthy. Laundry on site, tons of animals around and a real sense of community. There is a gorgeous yoga studio with floor to ceiling windows looking out on the lush foliage. An extremely peaceful and special place. I intended to stay for 2 nights and still havent left. I highly recommend this beautiful lodge, especially if you want to surround yourself with nature and beauty.

  • Las Colina (email hidden) to stay! As it is an older place it has some issues, but Kelly quickly puts to rights any problems that may crop up. She was also very helpful booking guides for the parks, and with information about the area and what there is to see and do. My room was clean, the bed was comfy and I had 2 extra blankets and lots of hot water in the shower. Breakfast was offered every day, even after a tour which might end at 11. The lodge is within walking distance to Monteverde park as well as Curi Cancha, the cheese factory, the children's forest, which was a great night hike, Stellas bakery and the women's co-op. Kelly and Mau are working hard and doing great things.

  • La Colina Inn (email hidden) to stay while in Monteverde. It rustic charm matches the environment of the cloud forest. The rooms are charmingly painted and have all that you need.

Kelly was really helpful in booking activities for us even at the last minute and found the right excursions for our taste. Breakfast was wonderful with plates of fruit, and home cooked omelets and toast with delicious local fruit jams.

The only down side is that the internet only works well in the main lobby/ breakfast area.

  • We had such a great time here! Kelly was AMAZING! She was extremely helpful with scheduling our tours and made the BEST food!! We really felt at home here. Great hot water and shower pressure too.

If anyone is visiting Monteverde for the first time, keep in mind, it can get very cold! Make sure to bring layers. ;)

  • This review is for Nanci, who was the host/owner when we stayed there earlier in January. Nanci was an awesome host! She gave us a lot of tips on fun things to do in Monteverde and we went on a cool night hike and horse back riding thanks to her suggesting. They don't have a formal kitchen staff at the lodge, but she always offered to accomodate us for food every night for a small price like $5-6, including ordering pizza! She invited a cook one night to make arroz con pollo for all the lodge guests for all the guests. The third night, we were too tired to go out, so she offered us food that her personal guests (her family) was cooking for free. We felt so welcomed there.

The room there is kind of below of the window panes was broken and as it gets pretty windy there at night, our first night was cold. We had to stuff a towel in it. Nanci contacted someone to fix it as soon as we told her. The towel that I had actually had a horrible looking (blood?) stain, so that was not the nicest. Nanci said they had ordered a bunch of new towels though, so that probably won't be an issue. The pillows were very, very flat, it's basically like sleeping on no pillow at all. But I heard they were getting new pillows too? Maybe we should have come a bit later!

Overall, host is lovely and made up for any shortcomings in the rooms!

  • Based on the other reviews I really thought our experience would be better.

When we first arrived there was no one to check us in and the lodge seemed to be deserted, so we walked around the property until we found someone that worked there, but he didn't seem to know who we were. He did give us a key and walk us to the room, and offered to help us plan out trip out, which we appreciated.

We left the room for an all-day tour shortly after arriving so we didn't spend much time there until we returned after 9pm. There was no heat in the room or hot water in the sink or shower of the bathroom. We didn't sleep well at all because it was really cold in the room and there were people talking in the room next door (we could hear everything through the wall). We checked again in the AM and there still was no hot water in the sink or tub.

The bathroom and shower were also visibly dirty, and coupled with the lack of hot water, we opted to skip using it at all and waited until we checked into our next room. There was also a nest of dead moths in the bathroom ceiling lamp, with other live moths flying around. I don't know if this was the case with all of the rooms, but ours seemed like it could have been better cleaned.

We met Nanci and her daughter, and both were very pleasant and nice to speak with. While waiting for our tour shuttle, Nanci gave us a lot of great background info about herself and Costa Rica, the area and the culture, and seemed to be very knowledgeable in those regards. The lodge also had a great charm to it, and seemed like it would (email hidden) to stay when there were more people staying as well.

Unfortunately it was just hard to be comfortable in the room, which made it hard to really appreciate it's beauty.

La Colina was opened as the FlorMar in 1977 by Marvin Rockwell, one of the original Quaker settlers of the area, and has been a family owned homestyle bed and breakfast for 20+ years. Starting in January 2014, La Colina Lodge is being run by Kelly and Mao, lending a new energy to the historic site. In addition to our rooms, we have a Cafe/Restaurant featuring locally grown organic vegetables, regular live music, documentary and independent movie nights, art exhibitions and poetry readings. We look forward to your visit with us!
