Open Concept home on the edge of the North Atlantic Ocean filled with fine art and books.
We are located across from the D&L Convenience Store and next to the Volunteer Fire Station in downtown Pouch Cove in a building that looks like a shed from the street. Green clapboard walls devoid of any windows and a hidden front door are what you see from the street. Inside it is an open plan house consisting of a fifteen hundred square foot room upstairs and two 600 square foot bedrooms downstairs all with large windows overlooking the edge of the North Atlantic Ocean.
The quoted rate is for ONE bedroom suitable for two people when I am in residence. The overall space is shared.
It is occasionally available for sole occupancy for four + people for more than the posted rate so please specify "sole occupancy" if the latter is what you seek and I will provide a quote for the period you seek.
Twenty minutes from the capital City of St. John's (and the International Airport) Pouch Cove is an old fishing village which is evolving into a bedroom community of 1500 people.
The East Coast Hiking Trail goes right by our door and you can choose to go north to Cape St. Francis or south towards Flatrock. There is no public transit but hitching a ride is generally very easy. A stay of any length would require a car.
The house has spectacular views of fields of ice in March, pack ice and/or icebergs in our spring May-June, and humpback and minke whales from mid June to generally mid August.
From our windows we have spotted seals, sea otters and many other ocean oddities from our comfortably worn leather sofas.
The heavy seas in late fall and winter leave salt from their spray on the windows.
If you wish to cook, hang out, stare out the window all day that is all cool. Want conversation or to be left alone. No worries either way. I am very flexible. Can provide any assistance you may desire or can leave you to your own devices.
Again the rate quoted is for ONE of the two bedrooms. Each of the bedrooms have a queen sized beds with 300 count sheets, hd televisions and their own decks.
The main floor has a projection television for movies, a great sound system, a new Kawai baby grand piano, a large fully equipped stainless steel counter topped kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a full wine fridge, beer fridge and a well used bar.
There is solid high speed wifi throughout the house, a new washer and dryer, wood stove, three exterior decks, on site parking and a house literally full to overflowing with contemporary paintings and books.
The house was used to host visual artists from around the world for twenty years (as the Pouch Cove Foundation) and the view from the house has graced the title page of Avalon section of the 2011 Newfoundland Travel Guide as well as the 2005 Canada Vacation Guide.
It has also been the site for television shows, photo shoots and most recently for my friend Sarah Slean's latest video, the Devil and the Dove. We have great acoustics in the house and it is a wonderful place to party or for your special event.
If you are a reader it might interest you to know that your host has been depicted in an Innocent in Newfoundland by David McFadden and in far greater detail (though not to greater advantage) in British travel writer John Gimlette's book Theatre of Fish: Travels Around Newfoundland and Labrador. And has been featured in Macleans, Canadian Art, Border Crossings and numerous newspapers across Canada.
Pets are not a problem but would appreciate knowing in advance. No tobacco smoking in the house.
Any questions please ask.
Interaction with Guests
Depends on my mood and the guest. I give as I receive.
The view. The hiking trails.
No public transport. Need a ride? Ask.
My mind-reading abilities have deteriorated over the past couple of years so if you want or need something or should something be wrong you have to tell me!
For twenty years I have hosted 1,000 artists at a residency for period of one to eighteen months, I doubt that you can surprise me.....not that I am offering you a challenge.
As the house is open plan if you are a privacy freak the only way you will be happy is to have the place to yourself. If I am in residence then there will be some give and take.
Please email me, rather than phone as I travel a lot and will probably have my phone turned off due to roaming charges.
A great place to relax. Friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable hosts. The East Cost Trail goes north and south of Pouch Cove and the views are spectacular in both directions. If you wake up early you can watch the sunrise over the ocean right from your bed.
James is a very relaxed and good host. The view is spectacular from his property!
James was a perfect host for our three night stay. He welcomed us warmly to his home, and gave us invaluable insight into the best activities in the area. The room was truly inspiring due to its amazing view and the artwork decorating it. I would have extended my stay dramatically longer if possible. The location is very convenient, and the home is on the East Coast trail which is perfect for adventurous tourists.
Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places I've ever stayed! James was a fabulous host - charming, chill, and full of great stories about the area, with some useful suggestions about what to see and where. I spent a good part of my 12-day stay working at Memorial University (a scenic and relaxed 25-minute drive into town) so spending the remainder of my time in Pouch Cove was the best way to get a feel for life on the Atlantic Coast. Besides simply gazing out at the sea at all hours of the day, I recommend a hike to Shoe Cove or along one of the other well-kept trails along the shore. I apparently timed it right - wild blueberries were in season – a delicious surprise. Renting a car was a good idea, since I could loop along the scenic route into town through Flatrock and Torbay (always a treat) and it made sightseeing in St. John’s and the area very easy. Above all, I very much appreciated James’ welcoming and relaxed make-yourself-at-home approach, his always open door, with people popping in and out all day. If you are looking for privacy this is not the place to hang, but if you enjoy interesting people and have always wondered what it’d be like to live in an artist’s atelier, you will thoroughly enjoy your stay here. Thanks again, James and Mariana!

The best word to sum up my experience at James' amazing home is .. WOW. The stunning views took my breath away, the gorgeous open concept living space was a breath of fresh air, the location - directly adjacent to the East Coast Trail - was incredible, the artwork hung around the home was inspiring, and the bedroom rental with a balcony overlooking the ocean was perfect. James was a fantastic host, and a wonderful, interesting, fun conversationalist. I enjoyed every minute of my time at his home - my only regret is that I could not stay there longer! I will definitely be returning the next time I find myself in this beautiful province :)
Great host, large, comfortable space, unbeatable view. I had to brace myself for the prospect of someone else potentially being in the space while I was staying there but James made me feel at home from the minute I walked in, seemed like one of my buddies I'd hang out with at home. He has some great historical and (website hidden) tales about the area, very accommodating and helpful guide too. His space embodies authentic bohemian living - do not come here looking for some W Hotel spa treatment. Come here to stretch out among fascinating art and other curios, if you can keep your eyes off of the North Atlantic right out in front of you.
