My wife and I, along with our 18 month daughter stayed at Jeff's converted barn for a long weekend over the bank holiday weekend in May. We had such a lovely enjoyable time.
The barn is ideally located if you have bikes, like we did, as it's virtually on a cycle path going to Cannop Ponds (20 mins at a leisurely pace), which is a lovely place for a picnic. It's also a 3 minute walk from a lovely gastro pub called the Woodsman in Parkend. As well as that there is loads of other stuff within a 20 min car journey, including Symonds Yat (great for canoeing, walking, eating, bird watching if you're into that, mini golf, and generally watching the world go by).
Jeff is a great host. He was so helpful and he answered any questions we had for him. He also went out of his way on a rainy day to print out some baby friendly things to do that didn't depend on the weather.
The barn itself is nice and quiet and well equipped with a high chair and travel cot; and with the log burner is quite cosy in the evening though we found that we needed the heating on quite a bit as it was liable to get quite cold. Generally the place was clean and tidy, however we found there were quite a number of wood lice on the ground floor when we arrived; I guess it is an old converted barn in the middle of a forest so it might be par for the course, we don't know. Either way, we would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a nice relaxing or active break in the Forest of Dean!
The cottage was clean, comfortable and well equipped. Set in a beautiful area close to lots of lovely walks. Jeff was very friendly and helpful and overall a great host, accomodating a last minute extra guest and our two dogs. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend it.
Jeff's place in Parkend is perfect, and Jeff is a great host. The barn is a perfect size for two adults and two 2 year olds. The second bedroom can easily fit two travel cots, and the master bedroom is nice and spacious. The living areas downstairs are perfect with a nice lounge come diner with a table which could seat 8. A perfect peaceful spot for enjoying the Forest of Dean. Tips: the local campsite (5 mins walk) has a great childrens playground. The fountain pub has a child friendly garden. For excursions head to puzzle wood, treetops railway and treehouses, and the sculpture trail at beachenhurst. The speech house near beachenhurst does great lunches.
Jeff was very welcoming and the cottage was a good size and in a good central position to explore the Forest of Dean.
I was a little disappointed that the basic essentials weren't there ie washing up liquid and only a small amount of toilet tissue and the double bed was a bit 'lumpy' The cottage is also close to a timber yard and the fork lift truck starts up quite early. But all that said I would recommend it
The area was great, easy access to a shop selling most items of food. Two pubs close by for meals and drinks. The barn was spacious and had everything we could wish for. Little things like salt and pepper, coffee and tea and washing up liquid were there. So handy when you travel from overseas.
We liked the local area for walks into the forest which were wonderful. The serenity of the area and the friendliness of the local people made us feel very much at home.
Excellent location to explore forest of dean. Very nice house. Spacious and clean. Lots of leaflets about attractions in the area. Comfortable beds. Fully equipped kitchen. We enjoyed our stay
Stayed for a long weekend over the bank holiday. Great location for cycling, walking, village life and roaming sheep. Comfortable accommodation. Property ideal for 2-4 people.
