About This Listing
This small, but charming room has a single bed. We make sure that there are interesting books relating to California in the book shelves. This room is close to the stairs in the house, you might hear some noise.
If a charming setting is important to you, this room will suit you. This bedroom, in a 1930 cottage, has a single bed, and a comfortable chair. The bookshelves are stocked with interesting books about California, and we are happy to suggest local destinations. You are welcome to use the kitchen while you are here.
The host family sleeps upstairs, so you have the hall bath to yourself, unless our other room is rented. There is a free wireless network. We are friendly hosts, having hosted foreign students for years, because we love guests.
We are interested in sustainability, and if you want, breakfast can include fresh eggs from out 3 backyard hens, or you are welcome to have an apple from the urban orchard in the yard. We recycle and compost.
The home is very close to CalTrain's California Avenue station, the Margarite Shuttle Bus service, and the Santa Clara County 22 bus line, so it is easy to get around. There is a car rental agency within walking distance. I have recent maps and schedules, for your convenience. We are a 10 minute drive from Stanford, or downtown Palo Alto.
Living room, kitchen, bath, back and front yard.
Interaction with Guests
We are happy to talk with you, and love meeting our guests. However we do try to give you your own private space.
We are about a 15 minute bike ride or car ride from Stanford campus, and about the same distance from downtown Palo Alto. There is a small commercial district that is about 20 minute walk from our home, on California Avenue, that has several good restaurants, a grocery store, and a health food store. There is a local Starbucks on El Camino real, about a 5 minute walk from our house. El Camino also has some restaurants within walking distance, Fish Market, Indo, Rice Thai, and Mandarin Roots are all good. However, El Camino is a thoroughfare, so it is not a downtown district with sidewalk dining. Please look at my Guidebook Map for more suggestions!
The VTA 22 bus line goes right past my house on El Camino Real, you can take this North to get to Downtown Palo Alto, or to the Downtown Palo Alto Cal-train station. The California Avenue train station is closer, but there is no easy transit, and it is about a 20 minute walk. We do have bicycles to loan out to guests, and this makes Stanford, Downtown Palo Alto, or California Avenue accessible easily, as we are within two blocks of a safe, dedicated bike route, Park Boulevard.
Quiet hours are between 11 pm and 7 am. With that said, this is a family home, and we know that some noise is inevitable, we do not need you to be silent, just respectful. Ask if you need a bike while you are here, we are in a bike friendly neighborhood, and will try and have one available for you. Please recycle and compost. Guests are fine, but not more than 4-5 days out of the month, so long as quiet hours are observed. There is an additional charge. Please let us know of any food preferences, we would like to make sure you have something you like in the house to eat. We will always try and have cereal, bread, and milk in the house for your use. No cooking in the rooms, and if you eat in your room, please bring the dishes to the kitchen promptly. Please put the fan on for 1/2 hour after using the shower. No smoking at all inside the house. We are happy to pick up at the local transit center, depending on arrival schedules. PLEASE let us know if you need anything, or if anything is bothering you, we want to make your stay with us pleasant!
Kirsten and Frank were accommodating and friendly hosts. They have a beautiful home and kindly lent me a bike to get around Palo Alto. The house is well situated - 10 minute bike from downtown PA and with some nice running trails nearby.
I really enjoyed staying at Kirsten and Frank's. They were both very chatty so I had fun conversations with both of them. They went out of their way to get a bike ready for me to bike to Stanford everyday I was there and do my research. The location is great if you need to go to campus by the way. It's pretty much a straight, two-mile ride, only takes 10-15min.
This was my first time in Palo Alto, and staying at Kirsten's made it feel familiar and cozy from the beginning, despite the heavy rain on the day I arrived. The room is nice and comfortable, with a pleasant surprise of a super cute 'secret' reading space: a small, raised divan situated in a kind of niche opposite the window. The bathroom looks brand new and is very clean. I spent most of my time outside of the house, but I had a very pleasant sleep on both nights, the bed was comfortable. Kirsten and Frank were very kind and seemed fun to talk to and learn more about, for which there was not much time. I was really grateful for the possibility to use the bike, which gave me more freedom of movement, although the 22 bus is just around the corner and is very convenient. All in all, a pleasant experience!
I really enjoyed staying with Kirsten and Frank! They are very welcoming hosts and they often went out of their way to make me feel at home. The room is very cute and comfortable! The home is in a very nice area with good access to transportation and food. I love the way the home is decorated and landscaped. I would definitely recommend this listing to anyone staying in the bay area!

About the Host, Kirsten
I am a life long Californian, a mom, and a designer. I love gardening, my family and my work. I am a passionate environmentalist, and I am afraid you will HAVE to recycle while you stay with us. Two of the things I love about N. California are it's natural beauty, and it's cultural diversity.
I think life should be fun, and that people should be kind to each other.
I am an interior designer, and run my business out of my home. My husband, Frank is in high tech, big data, if that means anything to you. He is a great resource if you are interested in the local Silicon Valley scene. We have 3 kids, 2 of which are at college most of the time.
We rent their rooms out while they are gone, and really enjoy our guests. I like to think that as hosts, my husband Frank and I offer a local concierge service. We enjoy helping our guests enjoy their stay. There is so much to see in our beautiful area, and hope that staying with our family gives our guests a feeling of being at home in Silicon Valley. This is a family home, and while we try to keep it perfect, sometimes we might be socializing, sewing, or cooking during your stay. We value our 5 star reviews, and want to make sure you are happy in our home. Please let us know if there is anything that bothers you, or if we can do anything to improve your stay while you are here.
