Vintage comfort in Palo Alto

House - Private room · Matadero Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94306, United States

The Space

If a charming setting is important to you, this room will suit you. This bedroom, in a 1930 cottage, has a single bed, and a comfortable chair. The bookshelves are stocked with interesting books about California, and we are happy to suggest local destinations. You are welcome to use the kitchen while you are here.
The host family sleeps upstairs, so you have the hall bath to yourself, unless our other room is rented. There is a free wireless network. We are friendly hosts, having hosted foreign students for years, because we love guests.
We are interested in sustainability, and if you want, breakfast can include fresh eggs from out 3 backyard hens, or you are welcome to have an apple from the urban orchard in the yard. We recycle and compost.
The home is very close to CalTrain's California Avenue station, the Margarite Shuttle Bus service, and the Santa Clara County 22 bus line, so it is easy to get around. There is a car rental agency within walking distance. I have recent maps and schedules, for your convenience. We are a 5 minute drive from Stanford, or down town Palo Alto.

  • I stayed with Kirsten and Frank for 30 days. My room was very convenient, it was like living in a home :-), I already missed my room. Frank and Kirsten are very king and helpful. especially, if you are new to the are, you can learn a lot form them and It was very pleasant for me to have conversation with this family, and I wish I could spend more time with the family. I forgot to say that they gave me a bike which was a life saver for my first few days.

  • Fantastic host, I think Kirsten and Frank are the friendliest people in Palo Alto. They'll give you all the information you could want about the area and help you however they can.

  • I spent 2 great weeks at Kirsten and Frank's little cottage.
The room was very comfy; I enjoyed the silence and slept really well. I travelled there to work too much so I did not get to share breakfast or use the kitchen to have dinner.
A co-worker needed a room at the end of my stay and was going to stay longer. Kirsten setup a small bed to accomodate both of us until he took over my bedroom on his own reservation.
I hope to come back again on my next trip.

  • My experience at Kirsten and Frank place was wonderful! I felt like home from the first day! They are super friendly and ready to help you in everything. The house is super nice and clean, the room is cozy and clean as well. I couldn't have asked for anything better :)

  • A wonderful, kind and caring family! Kirsten and Frank were very helpful, they informed me about where I could find what in the area, gave directions, advice, even a lift to the doctor once and offered lifts at other possibilities. They also gave me a bicycle, which is especially useful if you want to get around and don't have a car. Also, Kirsten and Frank are great partners for conversations, especially about politics and the environment!
House and garden are beautiful and cosy, the rooms have a good size and the bathroom that is shared only with the other guest if there is one, is also convenient. The cat is irresistible - I already miss them all.

  • The location is great for Palo Alto, not to far away from Stanford and good bus connection nearby. Kirsten and her whole family is very, very friendly and nice and always help where they can.
The room is very small, but nice, so is the bathroom.
Overall, the house is not the cleanest, especially the kitchen. But I think this good be because of the summer time, where all children were there as well.

    Response from Kirsten:

    David,
Thank you for your feedback, I think that you are right, that the kitchen was not a neat during the summer because of our children being home from college. We were worried about renting during the summer for this reason, but we had so many requests. It would have been lovely if you had mentioned any concerns during your stay, so we could have worked on making your experience more ideal. We really want any guest's experience to be as enjoyable as possible, and would have appreciated the opportunity to make your stay perfect. Please ask us if we can improve in any way.

  • Beautiful house, great location and, what is most important, wonderful, friendly people. It was a pleasure to stay there. Kirsten and Frank are best hosts you can imagine. The room is cozy, comfortable and clean. I can recommend this place to everyone.

  • I feel unbelievably fortunate to have had the chance to stay with Kirsten and Frank for a few weeks while looking for a longer term place to stay in town. This family is warm, interested, kind, and goofy and I could not have felt more comfortable and welcome in their home. The home and beautiful backyard garden definitely promote relaxation and comfort, too! I miss them already and can't wait to stop by again for a chat and a laugh and to pick some lemons from their prolific tree.

  • I've stayed with Kirsten and Frank for three weeks and my only regret is not having had more time to talk to them. Very friendly and helpful, they were the perfect hosts. Add to that a room with a unique décor and a very convenient location and here's a place on the top of my list next time I'm in Palo Alto.

  • I stayed with Kirsten and Frank for ten weeks during my internship. They are the most wonderful hosts you could ask for. They were always offering food, directions, and reviews of the area.

They truly live in the heart of Palo Alto. I was able to get almost anywhere via bike route. It was an easy five minutes bike ride to the caltrain every morning. The baylands, stanford, and downtown Palo Alto are all a short ride away too. Definitely a great place for an extended or short stay!

About
I am a life long Californian, a mom, and a designer. I love gardening, my family and my work. I am a passionate environmentalist, and I am afraid you will HAVE to recycle while you stay with us. I think life should be fun, and that people should be kind to each other. I am an interior designer, and run my business out of my home. My husband, Frank is in high tech, big data, if that means anything to you. He is a great resource if you are interested in the local Silicon Valley scene. We have 3 kids, 2 of which are at college most of the time.
