About this listing
Please be sure to send me a note or two about yourself before reserving. Thanks so much.....This room comes up first in most guest searches, so I keep it listed, but, if you book it, you will get the better Van Gogh or King Rooms.
Welcome to Your Rustic Pacific Northwestern Retreat
Come enjoy all that Portland has to offer! Please note, if you book this room, I will give you the better Van Gogh Room or The King Room. I keep this listing open online because it comes up in so many searches, but, it is currently occupied by a regular monthly roomie. Just write to me and I will tell you what I have available in the other two rooms.
A Pacific NW destination in itself, or a jumping off point eastward to Hood River Water Sports, north to Seattle and Canada, or points southward. We are close to the airport and public transportation of all sorts. Clean sheets, clean towels and a hot shower await you after your often arduous travels.
Please write to us first before automatically booking. This is a private home and we would like to get to know you a bit. Plus, double checking on availability is a good way to go. Thanks for understanding. The rooms that are available right now are the King room with the King size bed and Mahogany furniture and The Writer's Room. Many artists are breaking writer's blocks in that room, so something must be happening in there. Please see the photos of the King room listing for our upgrades.
Minutes from fun Hawthorne District, Belmont area, Stark St. Restaurant Row, Division St. Restaurant Row, and Woodstock/Reed College, freeways, etc.. We are also only about 10 minutes to downtown.
Our home is embedded in our own private forest in the southeastern Mt Tabor segment of "The Rose City" of Portland, Oregon. 80 miles from the coast and 80 miles from glorious Mt. Hood. We live in the best of all worlds here. Come join us in the experience. Rivers, museums, clubs, live music, theater, an educated metropolis and "keep it weird" mentality simultaneously. All can be found here. And then come home to a quiet home, decorated in a style of "South American Adventure Meets the Majesty of The Pacific Northwest".
Two cats live here too, so, we hope that you are a cat person. Waldo the 6" box turtle has come to live with us also. And we have added a 72 Gallon Tropical Fish Aquarium in the living room. Please look at our other listing for photos.
Our room is also available for relocating students and business folks for longer stays. Just contact us and we can discuss options.
Your space is a private room, with oak floors, a very comfy bed, desks (in the writer's room), closet space, windows facing the private overgrown forest. Our rooms are decorated with South American textiles and varied artwork. If you are arriving with a friend, communicate with us and we will set up an air mattress, if you need more than a twin bed in the Writer's Room. We have added our King Size Room accommodation. Some people are having trouble finding this room especially via Air BnB mobile app. Just contact me and we will work this out. The King room has a huge mahogany, four poster bed and has been extremely well received.
The bathroom, the "Tropical Fruit Salad" decorated kitchen, and coffee shop style setting living room are available for you. We also have a dining room/writing alcove.
The home is prepared with several little writing nooks...follow your muse...A truly Northwestern style wood stove accompanies you into the warmth of an Oregon vacation.
We will help you with directions to wherever you are heading next from your calm respite at our neighborhood home. We are close to the airport, cool Hawthorne Street, shopping, bus lines, trains, the new Portland Chinatown, Mt. Tabor, Portland Community College SE Campus, Warner Pacific College, Portland State University, Reed College, etc.. Our home is a hop, skip and a jump to Hood River and water sports, skiing, hiking, fishing, etc..
We ask for respectful communicative guests. No additional "hookups" to be brought home. We understand that, but you can always go somewhere else.
You will be greeted with hot coffee or tea. Traveling is treacherous sometimes and we want to help make your travels be smoother. Warm beverages in the morning will help you to be on your way...We previously did provide a morning light meal, but the food and our work kept going to waste. Most folks have their own plans for eating their way through the famous restaurants in Portland. Of course, if you wish for a light meal in the morning, just communicate that to us and we will hook you up. The coffee/tea station in the kitchen is always available to you.
English and Spanish language conversational classes available upon request. Write to me online via Air BnB with your questions.
Come and enjoy the grandeur of the Pacific Northwest USA. We would love to meet you!
The living room has a glass bistro table in front of the fireplace with written materials helpful to the traveler. The kitchen is available for cooking to all. Most guests never use it though. Travelers are on the run. But, please help yourself to complimentary coffee or tea anytime. There is a washer and dryer downstairs in my separate private space. Please just let me know when you need it. Writing nooks throughout the house and outside. Deck with lots of seating options. Please make yourself at home.
Interaction with Guests
Some guests want just rest and absolute privacy. Other guests want to share a glass of wine or a cup of java. We are flexible and aware here. Just let us know what your needs are. I work a lot, but I am also home a lot. I work in a famous Portland restaurant and I am here to give advice if you need it.
The neighborhood is extremely quiet. We are in our own little private forest here. Enjoy the tranquility of the back deck with comfy patio furniture. We have been told that it is so quiet here in the night that you could hear a pin drop on the street. I believe that traveler's enjoy this need to sleep easily. We are close to a multitude of pan-Asian restaurants. Mount Tabor is not far if you are in the need to hike up a small mountain. My front yard "snows" in pink petals from March to April. You will love it.
We are about 10 minutes from the PDX Airport. Close to freeways for easy access up and down the I-5 corridor. We are also 4 short city blocks to three major buslines. Travel is easy around here.
Other Things to Note
Waldo the 6" turtle lives here. I hope that you like pets. We have two cats too and a 72-gallon aquarium. Jazz streams almost all the time though.
No candles please; they burn down houses. Thanks for understanding....Please do enjoy a glass or wine or beer at your leisure. We are not fuddy duddies here. Just be reasonable about other guest's sleeping needs.

Responsible, independent, self-sufficient mature adults only please.
Smoke outdoors ONLY please.
No extra guests, other than screened guests paid via Air BnB. In other words, no hook-ups. We understand this, but you can always go somewhere else.
Happy, fun, upbeat people.
Clean up after yourself.
Shoes of at the door during wet weather please.
Show your ID upon arrival.
Check out time 10am (can be slightly flexible with good communication).
Shoes off at the door. Pacific Northwest is wet, ya know, thanks... trying to save the oak floors.
Communicate to me what your needs are and I will help you out as long as it is reasonable.
Thanks for thinking of staying with us!
I had a blast staying at Karen's place, if only for one night! Karen is very open, generous with her time and wine and speaks excellent Spanish! I was there for only one night so I didn't get a chance to check out the neighborhood that much, although I did see several nice areas on Hawthorne and Belmont that offered various dining options. Her place is conveniently located for a quick drive to PDX, so it's a good "night before" option to make sure you don't miss an early morning flight. The room I had was plenty large and had enough outlets to charge all my devices.
Very cute place! Nice big bed in the King Room and quiet environment. Easy access to downtown.
Karen's house is an oasis of kindness and creativity. You must be one who, like I do, loves a kind of semi-organized chaos, and if you are that type of person this is certainly the Rose City place for you.
The house is comfortable and crazy with lots of inspiration and engagement for anyone seeking to expand their Portland trip beyond site seeing and into the realms of personal connection, conversation, sharing and engagement.
Karen is a lifelong Portlandian with the insights that come with being a real local, AND she is a wide world traveler with the stories, thoughts, tastes and connections that come with it. A GREAT host!
Be aware, if you are looking for exploring near downtown, the Pearl, the Waterfront, etc. it's a bit of a trek from here, but if you're looking for something more than the run of the mill (and if you're looking at airBnB, me thinks you are), then Karen's place is perfect!
Karen is the most welcoming host i have ever met ! Everything was perfect. Her place is easily linked to Portland's center (one bus away) and the place is perfect ! I can only recommend Karen as the perfect host and her place as a perfect place to stay in Portland.
Karen hosted my 21 year old son for two weeks while he waited for his summer internship housing to become available. Marcelo reported that the location was ideal for commuting by bus to downtown and that Karen's place was artsy, convenient and super affordable.
Karen was very friendly and helpfull. She helped us finding good restaurants and cool places to go. The House is located in a Nice quiet neighbourhood, but it is still close to great bars and places to go out to eat. Great experience!

About the Host, Karen
Welcome to my humble little home! We love meeting people from all over the world. You will enjoy your visit here. Just express your needs to us and we will do what we can to help your stay be comfortable for you.
My home is located just off Division St., yes, the famous Restaurant Row of Division St. in SE Portland. Division St is home to the reknowned Pok Pok Thai Restaurant, Ava Gene's Restaurant famous for authentic Italian cuisine, Salt and Straw for your ice cream dreams, Whiskey Soda Lounge, Bollywood Theatre, and so, so much more.
I am personally an admitted "Restaurant Junkie" working at the famous Country Cat Dinner House and Bar as seen Diner's Dives and Drive-Inns and promoted by Guy Fieri. Come in and enjoy some Southern Cuisine done the way it should be! Country Cat is located in the Montavilla strip of restaurants only about 1.5 miles north of my humble little home. I spent many years working at the famed Ringside Steakhouse and did a 15-year-"tenure" at a famous Jazz Club and Dinner House, "The Brasserie Montmartre" during its hey day.
I am also currently an InnKeeper, obviously, and have spent many years as an Importer of South American Art, Jewelry, Textiles, Beads, Women's Accessories, Men's and Women's Ponchos, Shawls, Scarves, etc., where I acquired the nickname, "The Scarf Queen".

Karen is a busy person with lots of interests, working in various famous restaurants and participating in numerous other sideline gigs that keep her going and going. Our home encompasses an ever-changing visual landscape.
Life, like our home, is a consistent work in progress...
Feel free to write with any questions or requests.
Clean Sheets, Clean Towels and a Hot Shower await you.
