Welcome to Your Rustic Pacific Northwestern Retreat
A Pacific NW destination in itself, or a jumping off point eastward to Hood River Water Sports, north to Seattle and Canada, or points southward. We are close to the airport and public transportation of all sorts. Clean sheets, clean towels and a hot shower await you after your often arduous travels.
Our apologies that the photos are a little out of date. An Air BnB photography is arriving next week and there will be an update. The rooms that are available right now are the King room with the King size bed and Mahogany furniture and The Writer's Room. Many artists are breaking writer's blocks in that room, so something must be happening in there. Please see the photos of the King room listing for our upgrades.
Minutes from fun Hawthorne District, Belmont area, Stark St. Restaurant Row, Division St. Restaurant Row, and Woodstock/Reed College, freeways, etc.. We are also only about 10 minutes to downtown.
Our home is embedded in our own private forest in the southeastern Mt Tabor segment of "The Rose City" of Portland, Oregon. 80 miles from the coast and 80 miles from glorious Mt. Hood. We live in the best of all worlds here. Come join us in the experience. Rivers, museums, clubs, live music, theater, an educated metropolis and "keep it weird" mentality simultaneously. All can be found here. And then come home to a quiet home, decorated in a style of "South American Adventure Meets the Majesty of The Pacific Northwest".
Two cats live here too, so, we hope that you are a cat person. Waldo the 6" box turtle has come to live with us also. And we have added a 72 Gallon Tropical Fish Aquarium in the living room. Please look at our other listing for photos.
Our room is also available for relocating students and business folks for longer stays. Just contact us and we can discuss options.
Your space is a private room, with oak floors, a very comfy bed, desks (in the writer's room), closet space, windows facing the private overgrown forest. Our rooms are decorated with South American textiles and varied artwork. If you are arriving with a friend, communicate with us and we will set up an air mattress, if you need more than a twin bed in the Writer's Room. We have added our King Size Room accommodation. Some people are having trouble finding this room especially via Air BnB mobile app. Just contact me and we will work this out. The King room has a huge mahogany, four poster bed and has been extremely well received.
The bathroom, the "Tropical Fruit Salad" decorated kitchen, and coffee shop style setting living room are available for you. We also have a dining room/writing alcove.
The home is prepared with several little writing nooks...follow your muse...A truly Northwestern style wood stove accompanies you into the warmth of an Oregon vacation.
We will help you with directions to wherever you are heading next from your calm respite at our neighborhood home. We are close to the airport, cool Hawthorne Street, shopping, bus lines, trains, the new Portland Chinatown, Mt. Tabor, Portland Community College SE Campus, Warner Pacific College, Portland State University, Reed College, etc.. Our home is a hop, skip and a jump to Hood River and water sports, skiing, hiking, fishing, etc..
We ask for respectful communicative guests. No additional "hookups" to be brought home. We understand that, but you can always go somewhere else.
You will be greeted with hot coffee or tea. Traveling is treacherous sometimes and we want to help make your travels be smoother. Warm beverages in the morning will help you to be on your way...We previously did provide a morning light meal, but the food and our work kept going to waste. Most folks have their own plans for eating their way through the famous restaurants in Portland. Of course, if you wish for a light meal in the morning, just communicate that to us and we will hook you up. The coffee/tea station in the kitchen is always available to you.
English and Spanish language conversational classes available upon request. Write to me online via Air BnB with your questions.
Come and enjoy the grandeur of the Pacific Northwest USA. We would love to meet you!
The living room now has a glass bistro table in front of the fireplace with written materials helpful to the traveler. The kitchen is available for cooking to all. Most guests never use it though. Travelers are on the run. But, please help yourself to complimentary coffee or tea anytime. There is a washer and dryer downstairs in my separate private space. Please just let me know when you need it. Writing nooks throughout the house. Please make yourself at home.
Some guests want just rest and absolute privacy. Other guests want to share a glass of wine or a cup of java. We are flexible and aware here. Just let us know what your needs are. I work a lot, but I am also home a lot. I work in two famous Portland restaurants and I am here to give advice if you need it.
The neighborhood is extremely quiet. We are in our own little private forest here. Enjoy the tranquility of the back deck with comfy patio furniture. We have been told that it is so quiet here in the night that you could hear a pin drop on the street. I believe that traveler's enjoy this need to sleep easily. We are close to a multitude of pan-Asian restaurants and (website hidden). Tabor is not far if you are in the need to hike up a small mountain. My front yard "snows" in pink petals from March to April. You will love it.
We are about 10 minutes from the PDX Airport. Close to freeways for easy access up and down the I-5 corridor. We are also 4 short city blocks to three major buslines. Travel is easy around here.
Waldo the 6" turtle lives here. I hope that you like pets. We have two cats too and a 72-gallon aquarium, but NO TV. Jazz streams almost all the time though.
I had such a restful stay at Karen's Artsy Retreat in Portland! Karen is warm and welcoming and full of positive things to say about the area. Her home is close to Mt. Tabor (great hiking) and a short bus ride to downtown and other neighborhoods. After a long day of exploring it was so nice to come back to her cozy retreat - a cup of tea, friendly conversation, a cat on my lap, a comfy bed. Thank you Karen and Susan for helping to make my stay in Portland, and my first Airbnb experience, a happy one! Very best wishes, Maribeth
This was my first Airbnb experience and it really raised the bar! Karen is a wonderful lady and I really enjoyed staying with her for my first few days in Portland. She was very helpful with helping me understand the bus system and the general area. Her home is full of life and art which was a real joy for me to be around. I definitely would recommend these accommodations to anyone looking for a place to stay close to down town Portland!
Thanks Karen for opening your home to my wife and I. We had a great stay. It was nice to go out and be able to celebrate our 1st anniversary while still going to a place with a home like feeling. We look forward to more trips to Portland and having the opportunity to stay at the NW Arsty Retreat. Thanks so much again Karen for your wonderful hospitality. -it's always an adventure with the Beltran's
Karen's humble abode is exactly what I needed while visiting Portland. Her and her roommate are the sweetest women and fun to get into conversation with. Karen has great suggestions on places to see and eat if you are in need of some guidance. The room is comfortable and welcoming.
I scheduled with Karen at the last minute when I decided driving to a conference in Portland from Seattle in thunderstorms at 4AM was not an option, so I got a place with her the night before. Her home is pretty easy to find with (website hidden) Maps Directions but I couldn't see the house numbers at night. My room was spacious but not fancy. I could make myself a little soup in the kitchen in the morning. No sign in the bath, but Karen showed me how to pull down on the knob below the faucet to get water to the shower head. I might not have forgotten my little purse if the desk hadn't had books on it. But books are nice touches. The yard outside the back window has gorgeous trees. It WAS quiet, and I slept better than at home. It's about a 15 minute drive to where I needed to get downtown, so if you're in shape you can use the bike lane on Division St. I Love Portland's bike lanes!
What an amazing experience! Karen is a beautiful, warm, interesting woman that instantly settled my travel nerves and made me feel welcome in her lovely home.
This was my first AirBnB stay and Karen's listing was great. It was clear and full of useful information. Karen's home was a warm, safe, and rejuvenating space to curl up and read, rest, or join in the lively laughter usually to be found out on the deck.
I recommend Karen's Artsy Retreat to anyone, especially those that want more than a faceless room in a hotel.
Thanks again for a wonderful place to call home base for a few days!
Karen is a really nice person. We had such a great stay at her house. She even helped us planing the next steps of our world travel and told us, where we can rent cheap cars. We recommend to stay at Karens for any travellers.
I am so happy that I came across Karen and her airbnb listing. It was exactly what I needed! First off,Karen is a super awesome and lovely woman and I really enjoyed her company. Her house had such a relaxing and peaceful vibe that I was able to catch up on some much needed rest and also break through a writer's block to complete a song that I had been working on. I would 100% recommend staying with Karen and would definitely stay again!!! Thanks so much Karen!
Karen was a sweet host and her place was totally comfortable. Another plus was her place was a quick and easy drive to the airport.
