Situated on the hill behind Leme, Copacabana this family home has 2 Bed and Breakfast bedrooms which share a shower room and WC to rent.
Babilonia is a neighbourhood of Copacabana which sits neatly on the hill behind the Leme end of the beach. You can access by taxi, or you can walk there. The area is safe, friendly and open for tourists to explore. Some of the coolest grafitti in Rio can be seen on the walls here.
The small Copacabana community of Babilonia has approx 5000 residents and was "pacified" in 2009. It is now an up an coming neighbourhood in itself. It is a 10 minute walk to the beach from the house. In the neighbourhood there are schools, banks (Bradesco & Itau), shops, bars, hostels, small hotels, and a great community spirit.
This accommodate is perfect for travelers who wish to experience Rio with a real Brazilian family.
During Carnaval and New Year - we are ideally looking to accept bookings for 7 days or more - minimum period.
A double bedroom with a shared bathroom (the bathroom is shared between 2 guest rooms, and is cleaned daily). Guests are also welcome to make use of the 2 rooftop terraces which are common areas for the 6 guest rooms
Thiago is English speaking, and happy to help visitors orientate themselves in Rio. The family are welcoming and look forward to interact with guests as little or as much as they wish.
Babilonia is a small favela on the hill at the Leme end of Copacabana beach. The area has a safe and friendly atmosphere, with children playing in the streets, visitors are welcome to explore here. We know most of our neighbours and my family has been living here for generations. Please come visit and enjoy the community spirit and the amazing views to Copacabana and even to Cristo.
Moto-taxi (which costs R$2.50), taxis, bus and the closest metro station is Cardeal Arcoverde.
To travel from the airport to Copacabana I suggest you take the yellow cabs outside the airport - this should cost approx R$70 and the 20km journey usually takes 25mins depending on the traffic.
There are also regular buses, and express buses to Zona Sul from outside the airport.
Stay in a small Brazilian favela with a friendly local family.
A fresh tasty breakfast on the terrace is included.
great location with a wonderful view! was very nice to stay at thiago's place with his lovely parents, thank you! the guests part is completly separated, on top of the buliding with two big terraces and a own kitchen, they made this place very nice and cozy. we will come back for sure!
Thaigo's place is great, as everyone can attest. He is very responsive to communications and requests of all types. His mom, Vera, takes care of most of the day-to-day operations around the house and made me feel at home from the moment I arrived. Despite her limited English and my nonexistent Portuguese, I always felt welcome and taken care of.
The house itself is, indeed, at the top of a pretty intense hill, but it's located in a great part of the city. It's about a fifteen-minute walk to the nearest metro station and about a ten-minute walk to the beach. Walk to the bottom of the hill in Babylonia, and you've got all of Leme and Copacabana at your feet. As far as the view, the pictures don't do justice -- 24-hour beautiful views of the beaches and Cristo.
I was somewhat apprehensive about staying in Babylonia at first, but I couldn't have felt more safe. If anything, I felt most safe inside the community, where everyone seems to know each other, where police are constantly patrolling, and where you may just encounter some impromptu street festivities or other backpackers. In short, any apprehension about staying in Babylonia is misguided -- I couldn't have imagined a better and more authentic place to stay.
I loved my time in Rio and the Rufinos made it possible! I can't wait to return to the city and will look forward to staying here again.
Thiago's family is wonderful. The location is great, the view from the terrace is truly unique. The beach is very close, about 15 minutes by walking. I recommend this B&B to all backpackers.
The view is just as good as it looks! But the hill you have to climb to get there was way worse than we had anticipated. It was totally worthwhile when you get up there, but if you're in bad shape you'll probably want to take the moped taxis up.
Thiago, his mum and his dad are awsome hosts!
The location is the best if you want to feel the real Rio life!
The view is so incredible and breathtaking!
Breakfast was very delicious!
Thiago's mum Vera is very kind, she always helped us)))
To live on the top of favela is not a problem - you always can take a moto-taxi from the begining Lareiro Ary Barroso street and after 2 minutes you are on the spot))
At first when we were in Moscow we booked the room for 7 days and after we were going to find some other place to stay. But after the first day we changed our mind and decided to stay at Thiago's place for all our time in Rio!
Из России с любовью!))))
We absolutely loved Thiago's place - it was calm, quiet and lots of fun.
Location: excellent; the views are incredible and you are right in the heart of Favela action. The locals are really friendly and happy to help if you get lost, and the hostel is right next to a shop/bar/barber's shop! Leme beach is 10 minutes walk away and there are lots of juice bars, shops and bakeries very close. As it is on a hillside the walk up is very steep but make use of the motor taxi guys who will take you to 'Casa di Thiago' for a few Reals.
Hosts: very warm and friendly, thank you all very much for your hospitality! While we were there we were invited to a NYE barbecue with Thiago and his friends & family - really good fun.
Facilities: excellent breakfasts which filled us up all day. Clean, safe rooms with fans, locks; shared bathroom was clean with hot water.
Don't miss this place - we loved it and hope to come back some day!

Was in Rio for 4 days and we chanced upon Thiago's listing on airbnb. Initially, we were quite hesitant to stay in a favela, mainly for safety considerations but still went ahead so that we could experience the favela. Safety wasn't an issue, though fitness was (the climb to the favela was an exercise to all of us). Despite all that, we truly enjoyed our stay and Thiago's family was very hospitable.
We stayed a week in the double bedroom, it was really a great experience !! Thiago's family his really helpfull and friendly, the babylonia favela is a great place to stay, i recommend it to everyone going to rio, definetly the best view in copacabana !! Great terrace to have a barbecue and to hang out, the beach is like 10 mn walk, we just loved staying there !!
Muito obrigado to the Rufino family we will come back for sure ;)

Really Nice ! Thanks to thiago and his family !! Breakfast With the view to copacabana just amazing !!!
Thiago and his family are extremely kind and welcoming people. Our final 2 days in Rio were spent here and were fantastic. Although the weather was not great, the views from their family home were still incredible. It is quite a trek to get to their home (steep hill, steps, building works) but definitely worth it. Great location and wonderful people, thank you!
